Early landscape painting originated ca. 1500 in Antwerp, Venice and Southern Germany. In order to understand its genesis, we must analyze the early modern approach of Nature (the problems of compulsivity and self-control, immediate experience and distant representation) and the early humanist concepts of the parallel between natural and moral orders; further, we must study Patinir's thems, and his clientele (Netherlands, Italy, Spain .. ). Patinir's thems connect moral offences or diabolical influence to natural cataclisms, or sacred events and persons to the panoramic beauty of the world. 'Cosmic sympathy' is revived, but in a distant and 'aesthetic' way, in painting

    Working with Wicked Problems

    Get PDF
By publishing this report the KBF aims to facilitate knowledge sharing among all interested parties bringing together important learnings and take-away messages on working with wicked problems. Acknowledging the existence of wicked problems means admitting to face societal challenges for which no definitive answer exists. Wicked problems are structurally complex so that it is hard to say where a given problem stops and another one begins. And stakeholders will frame these challenges in different ways so that a one-size-fits-all solution is highly unlikely. Thinking in terms of wicked problems opens up a novel repertoire of strategies to come to grips with these issues. The report guides you through three approaches, five methodologies and seven rules of thumb

This article reports on survey research (N=1,418) aimed at examining whether parental expectations of maternal and child health (MCH) services are influenced by group characteristics (e.g., socioeconomic status [SES], ethnicity, at risk of poverty) and/or individual parenting context variables (e.g., received social support) in a context where these services are available to all. The findings reveal that parents have different expectations about the technical and relational expertise of MCH nurses. However, the authors found only very weak associations between family characteristics and parental expectations, suggesting that individual differences matter more than SES and other more traditional distinctions. Implications for MCH services are made

Early childhood education and care as a space for social support in urban contexts of diversity

The present study illustrates that social support in ECEC settings can take place across several socio-economical and cultural borders. The presence of children as brokers of relations plays a fundamental role in the creation of social networks, in the processes of parenting support and community building. “Free confrontations” between parents and children can foster daily learning processes, despite/thanks to the contradictions and tensions that occur. This suggests that a meeting place can be a space where the experiment of democracy sporadically can emerge. In this experiment, parents, children and professionals are actors in the construction processes of parenting and community building. In so doing, parenting and living together, the pedagogical and the social, coincide
