An outbreak associated with streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus in layers : evidence of fecal transmission
Major disease outbreaks caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus seldom are reported in poultry. Besides acute septicemia, infection can result in a subacute or chronic form of disease with described mortality rates of 11% to 80%. Previously, the source of infection in poultry was linked to horses in which this bacterium can be present as an opportunistic pathogen on mucus membranes. The main route of spreading and being maintained within a poultry flock, after entering the stable, however, remains unclear. This case report describes an outbreak associated with S. zooepidemicus affecting a flock of 28 500 layer hens housed in an aviary system with free range. Besides sudden deaths, clinical signs of depression were noticed. Between 44 and 61 wk of age a total mortality of 23% was observed. Egg production dropped from 92% to 83%. Bacterial titration revealed substantial numbers of S. zooepidemicus present in the ceca of a healthy chicken. This novel finding hypothesizes that transmission of the infection within the flock might occur through the fecal route
Penicillin-binding Proteins (PBP) and Lmo0441 (a PBP-like protein) play a role in Beta-lactam sensitivity of Listeria monocytogenes
While seven penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) or PBP-like proteins have been identified either by radiolabelled penicillin binding studies or genomic analysis, only PBP3 has been considered of interest for Beta-lactams activity against Listeria monocytogenes. Herein we reveal that both PBP4 and Lmo0441 (a PBP-like protein) play a direct role in cephalosporin activity in L. monocytogenes while PBP4 additionally has a protective affect against both penicillin and carbapenem
New diagnostic and treatment strategies in renal artery stenosis: a promising pursuit or disappointment foretold?
Clinical management of renal artery stenosis has seen a major shift, after randomised clinical trials have shown no group benefit of endovascular intervention relative to optimal medical control. However, the inclusion criteria of these trials have been criticised for focusing on a subset of patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis where intervention was unlikely to be beneficial. Moreover, new imaging and computational techniques have become available, which have the potential to improve identification of patients that will respond to interventional treatment. This review addresses the challenges associated with clinical decision making in patients with renal artery stenosis. Opportunities for novel diagnostic techniques to improve patient selection are discussed, along with ongoing Dutch studies and network initiatives that investigate these strategies
OSD2F: An Open-Source Data Donation Framework
The digital traces that people leave through their use of various online platforms provide tremendous opportunities for studying human behavior. However, the collection of these data is hampered by legal, ethical, and technical challenges. We present a framework and tool for collecting these data through a data donation platform where consenting participants can securely submit their digital traces. This approach leverages recent developments in data rights that have given people more control over their own data, such as legislation that now mandates companies to make digital trace data available on request in a machine-readable format. By transparently requesting access to specific parts of this data for clearly communicated academic purposes, the data ownership and privacy of participants is respected, and researchers are less dependent on commercial organizations that store this data in proprietary archives. In this paper we outline the general design principles, the current state of the tool, and future development goals
Ab initio simulations of liquid NaSn alloys: Zintl anions and network formation
Using the Car-Parrinello technique, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations
are performed for liquid NaSn alloys in five different compositions (20, 40,
50, 57 and 80 % sodium). The obtained structure factors agree well with the
data from neutron scattering experiments. The measured prepeak in the structure
factor is reproduced qualitatively for most compositions. The calculated and
measured positions of all peaks show the same trend as function of the
composition.\\ The dynamic simulations also yield information about the
formation and stability of Sn clusters (Zintl anions) in the liquid. In our
simulations of compositions with 50 and 57 % sodium we observe the formation of
networks of tin atoms. Thus, isolated tin clusters are not stable in such
liquids. For the composition with 20 % tin only isolated atoms or dimers of tin
appear, ``octet compounds'' of one Sn atom surrounded by 4 Na atoms are not
observed.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 3 Figures on reques
