Achieving optimal business performance through business practices: evidence from SMEs in selected areas in South Africa
Enhancing business performance is of increasing interest to all business leaders in today’s business environment. Studies relating to both large firms and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) constantly emphasise a positive relationship between business practices, management activities and performance, as it is often articulated that best business practices produce superlative business performance. This study examines empirically which business practices are implemented by SMEs in some selected areas in South Africa and how these business practices impact on their optimal performance. The population for the study comprised business owner-managers in the SME sector in Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba’Nchu (Free State province of South Africa). A statistical methodology was used to test the relationships hypothesised in the research model. The results reveal that all six selected business practices that were examined (marketing practices, strategic planning practices, human resource management practices, risk management practices, performance management practices and teamwork practices) have a positive and significant relationship with SME performance. Moreover, 97.1% of the SMEs that implemented all six business practices had optimal business performance. This study could serve as a guide for business consultants and SME support mechanisms to develop SME training programmes to help SME owners/managers to acquire the necessary skills to properly implement these six business practices, which will enable SMEs to achieve optimal performance.Achieving optimal business performance through business practices Key words: SMEs, business practices, SME performance, optimal performance, South Afric
Evaluation of three classifiers in mapping forest stand types using medium resolution imagery: a case study in the Offinso Forest District, Ghana
Loss of Ghana’s natural forests has been counteracted by plantation establishment and development. As at 2003, Ghana had a plantation area of about 97,000 hectares comprising different tree species. With the rapid expansion of plantations in the country, it is anticipated that major managerial challenges will arise due to insignificant technical personnel for monitoring and management. The application of GIS and remote sensing will be a powerful intervention and tool for monitoring and managing these forest resources in the area. The aim of this study was to determine a suitable method of mapping the different forest stand types using medium resolution images in the study area. Three classifiers were examined for their suitability in mapping the different forest stand types in the area (maximum likelihood, spectral angle mapper and decision tree). The results showed that using maximum likelihood classifier and ASTER imagery, different forest stand types can be accurately mapped with an overall accuracy of 88.50%.Key words: Geo-referenced, classification, algorithm, spectral, mapper

Anisotropic interactions of a single spin and dark-spin spectroscopy in diamond
The nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center in diamond is a promising atomic-scale
system for solid-state quantum information processing. Its spin-dependent
photoluminescence has enabled sensitive measurements on single N-V centers,
such as: electron spin resonance, Rabi oscillations, single-shot spin readout
and two-qubit operations with a nearby 13C nuclear spin. Furthermore, room
temperature spin coherence times as long as 58 microseconds have been reported
for N-V center ensembles. Here, we have developed an angle-resolved
magneto-photoluminescence microscopy apparatus to investigate the anisotropic
electron spin interactions of single N-V centers at room temperature. We
observe negative peaks in the photoluminescence as a function of both magnetic
field magnitude and angle that are explained by coherent spin precession and
anisotropic relaxation at spin level anti-crossings. In addition, precise field
alignment unmasks the resonant coupling to neighboring dark nitrogen spins that
are not otherwise detected by photoluminescence. The latter results demonstrate
a means of investigating small numbers of dark spins via a single bright spin

High rate nitrogen removal by ANAMMOX internal circulation reactor (IC) for old landfill leachate treatment
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a high rate nitrogen removal lab-scale ANAMMOX reactor, namely Internal Circulation (IC) reactor, for old landfill leachate treatment. The reactor was operated with pre-treated leachate from a pilot Partial Nitritation Reactor (PNR) using a high nitrogen loading rate ranging from 2 to 10 kg N m−3 d−1. High rate removal of nitrogen (9.52 ± 1.11 kg N m−3 d−1) was observed at an influent nitrogen concentration of 1500 mg N L−1. The specific ANAMMOX activity was found to be 0.598 ± 0.026 gN2-N gVSS−1 d−1. Analysis of ANAMMOX granules suggested that 0.5–1.0 mm size granular sludge was the dominant group. The results of DNA analysis revealed that Candidatus Kueneniastuttgartiensis was the dominant species (37.45%) in the IC reactor, whereas other species like uncultured Bacteroidetes bacterium only constituted 5.37% in the system, but they were still responsible for removing recalcitrant organic matter
Evaluation of subsidence, chondrocyte survival and graft incorporation following autologous osteochondral transplantation

95878.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate subsidence tendency, surface congruency, chondrocyte survival and plug incorporation after osteochondral transplantation in an animal model. The potential benefit of precise seating of the transplanted osteochondral plug on the recipient subchondral host bone ('bottoming') on these parameters was assessed in particular. METHODS: In 18 goats, two osteochondral autografts were harvested from the trochlea of the ipsilateral knee joint and inserted press-fit in a standardized articular cartilage defect in the medial femoral condyle. In half of the goats, the transplanted plugs were matched exactly to the depth of the recipient hole (bottomed plugs; n = 9), whereas in the other half of the goats, a gap of 2 mm was left between the plugs and the recipient bottom (unbottomed plugs; n = 9). After 6 weeks, all transplants were evaluated on gross morphology, subsidence, histology, and chondrocyte vitality. RESULTS: The macroscopic morphology scored significantly higher for surface congruency in bottomed plugs as compared to unbottomed reconstructions (P = 0.04). However, no differences in histological subsidence scoring between bottomed and unbottomed plugs were found. The transplanted articular cartilage of both bottomed and unbottomed plugs was vital. Only at the edges some matrix destaining, chondrocyte death and cluster formation was observed. At the subchondral bone level, active remodeling occurred, whereas integration at the cartilaginous surface of the osteochondral plugs failed to occur. Subchondral cysts were found in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this animal model, subsidence tendency was significantly lower after 'bottomed' versus 'unbottomed' osteochondral transplants on gross appearance, whereas for histological scoring no significant differences were encountered. Since the clinical outcome may be negatively influenced by subsidence, the use of 'bottomed' grafts is recommended for osteochondral transplantation in patients
Local Thermometry of Neutral Modes on the Quantum Hall Edge
A system of electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can be
tuned to create a gapped 2D system with one dimensional channels along the
edge. Interactions among these edge modes can lead to independent transport of
charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Measuring the chirality and
transport properties of these charge and heat modes can reveal otherwise hidden
structure in the edge. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall
system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstream and
downstream along the edge of the heater, we can measure both the chemical
potential and temperature of that edge to study charge and heat transport,
respectively. We find that charge is transported exclusively downstream, but
heat can be transported upstream when the edge has additional structure related
to fractional quantum Hall physics.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figure
<i>C-elegans</i> model identifies genetic modifiers of alpha-synuclein inclusion formation during aging
Inclusions in the brain containing alpha-synuclein are the pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease, but how these inclusions are formed and how this links to disease is poorly understood. We have developed a <i>C-elegans</i> model that makes it possible to monitor, in living animals, the formation of alpha-synuclein inclusions. In worms of old age, inclusions contain aggregated alpha-synuclein, resembling a critical pathological feature. We used genome-wide RNA interference to identify processes involved in inclusion formation, and identified 80 genes that, when knocked down, resulted in a premature increase in the number of inclusions. Quality control and vesicle-trafficking genes expressed in the ER/Golgi complex and vesicular compartments were overrepresented, indicating a specific role for these processes in alpha-synuclein inclusion formation. Suppressors include aging-associated genes, such as sir-2.1/SIRT1 and lagr-1/LASS2. Altogether, our data suggest a link between alpha-synuclein inclusion formation and cellular aging, likely through an endomembrane-related mechanism. The processes and genes identified here present a framework for further study of the disease mechanism and provide candidate susceptibility genes and drug targets for Parkinson's disease and other alpha-synuclein related disorders
Lime stabilisation for earthworks: a UK perspective
Lime stabilisation is a versatile technique applied during earthworks operations. Modern soil recycling units are much more efficient at pulverising fill material and intermixing the added binder/water than machinery available 20 years ago. While supplier innovation adds flexibility to the site working method, specifications have not been sufficiently updated to permit optimal application. This review paper details the physico-chemical changes instigated through the lime-clay soil reaction, updating previous reviews. It aims to assist scientific debate, current practitioners and future specification changes. For example, the application of the minimum 24 h mellowing periods (mandatory to UK specifications) with high reactivity, quicklime powders is concluded to cause increased air voids in the compacted fill. Increased air voids are associated with reduced long-term strength and potential volume change from water ingress, which is of particular concern for sulfate swelling. Shorter mellowing periods and/or use of hydrated lime may lesson this issue; however, a 'one size fits all' approach is discouraged in preference to site-specific methodologies refined to suit the fill material and project requirements. The discussion also summarises working methods which may lower the risk of sulfate swell and defines areas requiring further practical research
Levels of Angiopoietin 2 Are Predictive for Mortality in Patients Infected With Yellow Fever Virus
In 2018 there was a large yellow fever outbreak in São Paulo, Brazil, with a high fatality rate. Yellow fever virus can cause, among other symptoms, hemorrhage and disseminated intravascular coagulation, indicating a role for endothelial cells in disease pathogenesis. Here, we conducted a case-control study and measured markers related to endothelial damage in plasma and its association with mortality. We found that angiopoietin 2 is strongly associated with a fatal outcome and could serve as a predictive marker for mortality. This could be used to monitor severe cases and provide care to improve disease outcome
