    Geostatistical modelling of sedimentological parameters using multi-scale terrain variables: application along the Belgian part of the North Sea

    In the nowadays highly pressurized marine environment, a science-based approach to management becomes increasingly important. In many cases, the sediment nature and processes are the key to the understanding of the marine ecosystem, and can explain particularly the presence of soft-substrata habitats. For predictions of the occurrence of species and habitats, detailed sedimentological information is required. This paper presents a methodology to create high quality sedimentological data grids of grain-size fractions and the percentage of silt-clay. Based on a multibeam bathymetry terrain model, multiple sources of secondary information (multi-scale terrain variables) were derived. Through the use of the geostatistical technique, Kriging with an external drift (KED), this secondary information was used to assist in the interpolation of the sedimentological data. For comparison purposes, the more commonly used Ordinary Kriging technique was also applied. Validation indices indicated that KED gave better results for all of the maps

    Unveiling the prehistoric landscape at Stonehenge through multi-receiver EMI

    YesArchaeological research at Stonehenge (UK) is increasingly aimed at understanding the dynamic of the wider archaeological landscape. Through the application of state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, unprecedented insight is being gathered into the buried archaeological features of the area. However, applied survey techniques have rarely targeted natural soil variation, and the detailed knowledge of the palaeotopography is consequently less complete. In addition, metallic topsoil debris, scattered over different parts of the Stonehenge landscape, often impacts the interpretation of geophysical datasets. The research presented here demonstrates how a single multi-receiver electromagnetic induction (EMI) survey, conducted over a 22 ha area within the Stonehenge landscape, offers detailed insight into natural and anthropogenic soil variation at Stonehenge. The soil variations that were detected through recording the electrical and magnetic soil variability, shed light on the genesis of the landscape, and allow for a better definition of potential palaeoenvironmental and archaeological sampling locations. Based on the multi-layered dataset, a procedure was developed to remove the influence of topsoil metal from the survey data, which enabled a more straightforward identification of the detected archaeology. The results provide a robust basis for further geoarchaeological research, while potential to differentiate between modern soil disturbances and the underlying sub-surface variations can help in solving conservation and management issues. Through expanding this approach over the wider area, we aim at a fuller understanding of the human–landscape interactions that have shaped the Stonehenge landscape

    Evaluatie en waardering van de archeologische sites Rooiveld-Papenvijvers(Oostkamp, provincie West-Vlaanderen)

    Dit rapport beschrijft de resultaten van het waarderend onderzoek op de archeologische sites Rooiveld-Papenvijvers in Oostkamp (West-Vlaanderen). De oudste sporen van menselijke activiteit in dit gebied gaan terug tot het mesolithicum. De bewoning tijdens het neolithicum is goed gedocumenteerd. Naast de opgegraven nederzetting te Waardamme Vijvers, leverde het proefsleuvenonderzoek te Papenvijvers een finaal-neolithische site (3de millennium cal BC). Verder leverden de beperkte prospecties op verschillende plaatsen, waaronder Oostkamp Nieuwenhove en Hertsberge Papevijvers, lithische artefacten op die naar alle waarschijnlijkheid tot een niet nader te bepalen fase van het neolithicum behoren. Deze situatie is vrij uniek voor Vlaanderen. Neolithische bewoning in de zandige delen van Vlaanderen ontbrak tot nog toe vrijwel, met uitzondering van enkele graven van de Klokbekercultuur. De opgraving te Waardamme Vijvers is bijzonder vanwege de ontdekking van de eerste en vooralsnog enige huisplattegrond uit het neolithicum in Vlaanderen. Sporen uit de bronstijd zijn dankzij de luchtfotografie heel talrijk in het gebied. Het desktop onderzoek leverde in totaal een negental cirkelvormige structuren op die naar alle waarschijnlijkheid mogen geïnterpreteerd worden als resten van grafheuvels uit de vroege en midden-bronstijd. Het is ook duidelijk dat de regio in de bronstijd bewoond was, o.a. door de opgraving op de site Waardamme Vijvers. Voor de ijzertijd is de situatie vermoedelijk gelijklopend. De enige nederzetting die uit deze periode werd aangetroffen komt eveneens uit de opgraving in Waardamme Vijvers. Voor de Romeinse periode beschikken we slechts over de sporen van een grafveld op Waardamme Vijvers en keramiekvondsten. Latere periodes zijn alleen via cartografische bronnen gedocumenteerd. Het rapport eindigt met aanbevelingen voor verder onderzoek en beheer van dit gebied

    Mapping nematode diversity in the Southern Bight of the North Sea

    In order to protect the biodiversity of the seas from, e.g., overexploitation, the spatial distribution of biodiversity and the mapping of biodiversity hotspots are of great importance. In the present paper we discuss different methods to develop full coverage biodiversity maps of free-living marine nematodes in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. A database with sampling data, gathered over 3 decades (1972 to 2004), combined with exhaustive environmental data, was employed to predict species richness and the expected number of species by different methods: ordinary kriging (OK) and regression kriging (RK) with ordinary least squares (OLS) and generalised least squares (GLS). The predictive value of these methods was evaluated by an independent validation set. Replicate samples were used to make an accurate estimation of the nugget variance, since replicates reveal local variability. Accordingly, it was feasible to find a spatial pattern in the residuals of the regression models. Our analysis pointed out that GLS improved the OK models substantially, while RK only slightly improved the GLS model. The diversity of marine nematodes is substantially influenced by the silt-clay fraction and the amount of total suspended matter, which is also reflected in the resulting map with a species-poor area near the coast line, especially near the south of the mouth of the Scheldt estuary.     Revisiting the Immune Trypanolysis Test to Optimise Epidemiological Surveillance and Control of Sleeping Sickness in West Africa

    Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) due to Trypanosoma brucei (T.b.) gambiense is usually diagnosed using two sequential steps: first the card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) used for serological screening, followed by parasitological methods to confirm the disease. Currently, CATT will continue to be used as a test for mass screening because of its simplicity and high sensitivity; however, its performance as a tool of surveillance in areas where prevalence is low is poor because of its limited specificity. Hence in the context of HAT elimination, there is a crucial need for a better marker of contact with T.b. gambiense in humans. We evaluated here an existing highly specific serological tool, the trypanolysis test (TL). We evaluated TL in active, latent and historical HAT foci in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. We found that TL was a marker for exposure to T.b. gambiense. We propose that TL should be used as a surveillance tool to monitor HAT elimination

    Metabolomics to unveil and understand phenotypic diversity between pathogen populations

    Visceral leishmaniasis is caused by a parasite called Leishmania donovani, which every year infects about half a million people and claims several thousand lives. Existing treatments are now becoming less effective due to the emergence of drug resistance. Improving our understanding of the mechanisms used by the parasite to adapt to drugs and achieve resistance is crucial for developing future treatment strategies. Unfortunately, the biological mechanism whereby Leishmania acquires drug resistance is poorly understood. Recent years have brought new technologies with the potential to increase greatly our understanding of drug resistance mechanisms. The latest mass spectrometry techniques allow the metabolome of parasites to be studied rapidly and in great detail. We have applied this approach to determine the metabolome of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant parasites isolated from patients with leishmaniasis. The data show that there are wholesale differences between the isolates and that the membrane composition has been drastically modified in drug-resistant parasites compared with drug-sensitive parasites. Our findings demonstrate that untargeted metabolomics has great potential to identify major metabolic differences between closely related parasite strains and thus should find many applications in distinguishing parasite phenotypes of clinical relevance
