Symptom complexes in patients with seropositive arthralgia and in patients newly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis: a qualitative exploration of symptom development
Objective: The aim of this study was to explore symptoms and symptom development during the earliest phases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients with seropositive arthralgia and patients newly diagnosed with RA
Stability constants for some divalent metal ion/crown ether complexes in methanol determined by polarography and conductometry
Stability constants in methanol at 25.0°C were evaluated for the complexes of the divalent cations Ca2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, Co2+ and Cu2+ with the macrocyclic polyethers 15-crown-5 (15C5), 18-crown-6 (18C6), dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (DC18C6) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8). The log K values of the 1:1 complexes were generally in the range 2.1–4.2, which is low in comparison to the values of the corresponding crown ether/alkali metal ion complexes. M2L complexes were observed for the systems Pb2+/18C6, Pb2+/DC18C6, Ca2+/DC18C6 and Cu2+/D18C6, whereas ML2 complexes were found for Ca2+/18C6 and Cu2+/18C6. Within the series of complexes studied, there was no clear relationship between cation diameter and hole size
Effects of Event-Free Noise Signals on Continuous-Time Simulation Performance
Generating stochastic input signals such as noise in physical systems is traditionally implemented using discrete random number generators based on discrete time-events.
Within the Modelica community, random number generators free of time-events have recently been proposed in order to increase the performance of system simulations.
However, the impact of such signals on commonly used solvers, such as DASSL or Radau IIA, is still under discussion.
In order to provide better understanding for modeling practitioners, we examine the influence of event-free noise models on simulation performance.
To this end, we conduct practical simulation experiments with systems of three sizes, two solvers, and different parameters.
Results indicate that step-size control can handle event-free noise generators well and that they outperform sampled generators.
The findings can be related to other time-dependent system inputs
Numerical simulations of kink instability in line-tied coronal loops
The results from numerical simulations carried out using a new shock-capturing, Lagrangian-remap, 3D MHD code, Lare3d are presented. We study the evolution of the m=1 kink mode instability in a photospherically line-tied coronal loop that has no net axial current. During the non-linear evolution of the kink instability, large current concentrations develop in the neighbourhood of the infinite length mode rational surface. We investigate whether this strong current saturates at a finite value or whether scaling indicates current sheet formation. In particular, we consider the effect of the shear, defined by where is the fieldline twist of the loop, on the current concentration. We also include a non-uniform resistivity in the simulations and observe the amount of free magnetic energy released by magnetic reconnection
The effects of communicating uncertainty on public trust in facts and numbers.
Uncertainty is inherent to our knowledge about the state of the world yet often not communicated alongside scientific facts and numbers. In the "posttruth" era where facts are increasingly contested, a common assumption is that communicating uncertainty will reduce public trust. However, a lack of systematic research makes it difficult to evaluate such claims. We conducted five experiments-including one preregistered replication with a national sample and one field experiment on the BBC News website (total n = 5,780)-to examine whether communicating epistemic uncertainty about facts across different topics (e.g., global warming, immigration), formats (verbal vs. numeric), and magnitudes (high vs. low) influences public trust. Results show that whereas people do perceive greater uncertainty when it is communicated, we observed only a small decrease in trust in numbers and trustworthiness of the source, and mostly for verbal uncertainty communication. These results could help reassure all communicators of facts and science that they can be more open and transparent about the limits of human knowledge

Alternative model of the Antonov problem
Astrophysical systems will never be in a real Thermodynamic equilibrium: they
undergo an evaporation process due to the fact that the gravity is not able to
confine the particles. Ordinarily, this difficulty is overcome by enclosing the
system in a rigid container which avoids the evaporation. We proposed an
energetic prescription which is able to confine the particles, leading in this
way to an alternative version of the Antonov isothermal model which unifies the
well-known isothermal and polytropic profiles. Besides of the main features of
the isothermal sphere model: the existence of the gravitational collapse and
the energetic region with a negative specific heat, this alternative model has
the advantage that the system size naturally appears as a consequence of the
particles evaporation.Comment: RevTex4, 9 pages, 10 figures, Version Submitted to PR
