    A correction procedure for the errors in single-crystal intensities due to the inhomogeneity of the primary X-ray beam

    Graphite monochromators are known to give rise to non-homogeneous primary X-ray beams. When intensities of single crystals are measured the effective cross section of a non-spherical crystal in the X-ray beam depends on its orientation in the beam. Therefore, systematic errors in the measured integrated intensities are introduced by the inhomogeneity of the incoming beam. A correction for these errors can be made, knowing the intensity profile of the primary beam and the dimensions and orientation of the crystal in the beam. The correction can conveniently be applied with the absorption correction. Examples of the corrections are given for crystals with rational boundary planes. It is shown that the intensity of an X-ray reflection as a function of the rotation about the scattering vector ( rotation) can be calculated with fair accuracy. In some cases (large elongated crystals in an inhomogeneous beam) correction for absorption only may give results which are worse than those with no correction at all

    Parameters of the attenuated schistosome vaccine evaluated in the olive baboon

    Five exposures of baboons to the attenuated schistosome vaccine gave greater protection than three exposures, but this attenuation was not sustained when challenge was delayed. Within the scope of the data collected, fecal egg counts and circulating antigen levels did not accurately predict the observed worm burdens. Levels of immunoglobulin G at challenge correlated best with protection, but there was little evidence of a recall response

    Lack of effect of pravastatin on cerebral blood flow or parenchymal volume loss in elderly at risk for vascular disease

    <p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Ageing is associated with a decline in cerebral blood flow. Animal studies have shown that cholesterol-lowering therapy with statins might preserve cerebral blood flow (CBF). We examined the effect of 40 mg pravastatin on the decline in CBF and brain volume in a subset of elderly subjects participating in the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) trial.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> Randomization was not stratified according to whether or not subjects participated in the MRI substudy. In 391 men (n=226) and women (n=165) aged 70 to 82 years (mean±SD, 75±3.2), we measured total CBF (in mL/min) at baseline and after a mean±SD follow-up of 33±1.4 months with a gradient-echo phase-contrast MRI technique. Total CBF was defined as the summed flows in both internal carotid and vertebral arteries. Parenchymal volume (whole brain) was segmented with the use of in-house–developed semiautomatic software.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> Total CBF significantly declined in the placebo-allocated group, from 521±83 to 504±92 mL/min (P=0.0036) and in the pravastatin-allocated group from 520±94 to 506±92 mL/min (P=0.018). This decline was not significantly different between treatment groups (P=0.56). There was also a significant reduction in brain volume over time (P<0.001), which was not different between the treatment groups (P=0.47). When expressed per unit of parenchymal volume, the decline in CBF over time was no longer statistically significant.</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> Elderly people at risk for cerebral vascular disease had a significant decline in CBF with increasing age that was explained by a concomitant reduction in brain volume. Treatment with 40 mg pravastatin daily had no beneficial effect on total CBF.</p&gt

    Induced plant defences in biological control of arthropod pests: a double‐edged sword

    Biological control is an important ecosystem service delivered by natural enemies. Together with breeding for plant defence, it constitutes one of the most promising alternatives to pesticides for controlling herbivores in sustainable crop production. Especially induced plant defences may be promising targets in plant breeding for resistance against arthropod pests. Because they are activated upon herbivore damage, costs only incur when defence is needed. Moreover, they can be more specific than constitutive defences. Nevertheless, inducible defence traits that are harming plant pest organisms may interfere with biological control agents, such as predators and parasitoids. Despite the vast fundamental knowledge on plant defence mechanisms and their effects on natural enemies, our understanding on the feasibility of combining biological control with induced plant defence in practice is relatively poor. In this review, we focus on arthropod pest control and present the most important features of biological control with natural enemies and of induced plant defence. Furthermore, we show potential synergies and conflicts among them and finally, identify gaps and list opportunities for their combined use in crop protection. We suggest that breeders should focus on inducible resistance traits that are compatible with the natural enemies of arthropod pests, specifically traits that facilitate communities of natural enemies to build-up.<br/

    Comparison of the chromosomal pattern of primary testicular nonseminomas and residual mature teratomas after chemotherapy

    About 70 to 75% of patients with nonseminomatous testicular germ cell tumors (NSs) present with metastases. When these metastases are treated with chemotherapy, often residual mature teratoma (RMT) is left. RMT is composed of fully differentiated somatic tissue. Untreated metastases of NSs rarely consist exclusively of mature somatic tissue. Apparently, after chemotherapy treatment there is a shift towards higher degrees of differentiation. Investigating tumor progression and the mechanism(s) involved in therapy-related differentiation, we compared the cytogenetically abnormal karyotypes of a series of 70 NSs with those of 31 RMTs. In NSs and RMTs, the modal total chromosome number does not differ and is in the triploid range. Both the frequency and the average copy number of i(12p) are the same, and the pattern of chromosomal over-and underrepresentation and distribution of breakpoints do not differ significantly in these series. So, we found the chromosomal pattern of RMTs as abnormal as those of primary NSs. Based on cytogenetics, we found no indication that specific chromosomal alterations parallel metastasis and therapy-related differentiation of the metastases. The cytogenetic data suggest that both induction of differentiation of (selected) cells or selection of cells with capacity to differentiate are possible mechanisms for the therapy-related differentiation of RMTs.
