    Study of the Quantum Efficiency of CsI Photocathodes Exposed to Oxygen and Water Vapour

    The operation of CsI photocathodes in gaseous detectors requires special attention to the purity of the applied gas mixtures.We have studied the influence of oxygen and water vapour contaminations on the performance of CsI photocathodes for theALICE HMPID RICH prototype. Measurements were done through comparison of Cherenkov rings obtained from beamtests. Increased levels of oxygen and water vapour did not show any effect on the performance. The results of this studyfound a direct application in the way of storing CsI photocathodes over long periods nad in particular in the shipment of theHMPID prototype from CERN to the STAR experiment at BNL.     Impact of contractures on daily functioning in adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy: a qualitative study

    PURPOSE: Exploring the impact of contractures in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) on daily functioning and participation and the impact of received contracture management. METHODS: We included 14, non-ambulant AYA with SMA types 2/3 (10 females and 4 males), aged 16-30 years. Interviews focused on two topics: perceived impact of contractures on daily functioning and of previous contracture management. We used inductive thematic analysis for interview analysis. RESULTS: In general, participants experienced muscle weakness to be more of a hindrance than contractures; they had adapted to their contractures over time. Participants considered contracture treatment useful when goals were meaningful and realistic. Participants mentioned that their perspective on contracture management would change in light of a promise of improved motor function due to disease-modifying treatment. CONCLUSION: Despite the relatively low impact of contractures in comparison to the loss of muscle strength, non-ambulant AYA with SMA should be informed on the potential impact of contractures and benefits and potential adverse effects of their management. This information can support the shared decision-making process. While respecting individual choices, allows for incorporating interventions into daily life and the promotion of daily functioning and participation when children with SMA are growing up

    Gas and dust in a submillimeter galaxy at z = 4.24 from the Herschel ATLAS

    We report ground-based follow-up observations of the exceptional source, ID141, one the brightest sources detected so far in the H-ATLAS cosmological survey. ID141 was observed using the IRAM 30-meter telescope and Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI), the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) submillimeter telescope to measure the dust continuum and emission lines of the main isotope of carbon monoxide and carbon ([C I] and [C II]). The detection of strong CO emission lines with the PdBI confirms that ID141 is at high redshift (z=4.243 +/- 0.001). The strength of the continuum and emission lines suggests that ID141 is gravitationally lensed. The width (Delta V (FWHM) ~ 800 km/s}) and asymmetric profiles of the CO and carbon lines indicate orbital motion in a disc or a merger. The properties derived for ID141 are compatible with a ultraluminous (L_FIR ~ 8.5 +/- 0.3 x 10^13/mu_L Lsun, where mu_L is the amplification factor, dense (n ~ 10^4 cm^-3) and warm (T_kin ~ 40K) starburst galaxy, with an estimated star-formation rate of (0.7 to 1.7) x 10^4/mu_L Msun/yr. The carbon emission lines indicate a dense (n ~ 10^4 cm^-3) Photo-Dominated Region, illuminated by a far-UV radiation field a few thousand times more intense than that in our Galaxy. In conclusion, the physical properties of the high-z galaxy, ID141, are remarkably similar to those of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies.Comment: To appear in Ap

    The dynamics of vortex generation in superfluid 3He-B

    A profound change occurs in the stability of quantized vortices in externally applied flow of superfluid 3He-B at temperatures ~ 0.6 Tc, owing to the rapidly decreasing damping in vortex motion with decreasing temperature. At low damping an evolving vortex may become unstable and generate a new independent vortex loop. This single-vortex instability is the generic precursor to turbulence. We investigate the instability with non-invasive NMR measurements on a rotating cylindrical sample in the intermediate temperature regime (0.3 - 0.6) Tc. From comparisons with numerical calculations we interpret that the instability occurs at the container wall, when the vortex end moves along the wall in applied flow.Comment: revised & extended version.     The STAR-RICH detector extends the particle identification capapbilities of the STAR experiment for charged hadrons at mid-rapidity. This detector represents the first use of a proximity-focusing CsI-based RICH detector in a collider experiment. It provides identification of pions and kaons up to 3 GeV/c and protons up to 5 GeV/c.     CONCERTO: High-fidelity simulation of millimeter line emissions of galaxies and [CII] intensity mapping

    The intensity mapping of the [CII] 158-ÎŒm line redshifted to the submillimeter window is a promising probe of the za>4 star formation and its spatial distribution into large-scale structures. To prepare the first-generation experiments (e.g., CONCERTO), we need realistic simulations of the submillimeter extragalactic sky in spectroscopy. We present a new version of the simulated infrared dusty extragalactic sky (SIDES) model including the main submillimeter lines around 1 mm (CO, [CII], [CI]). This approach successfully reproduces the observed line luminosity functions. We then use our simulation to generate CONCERTO-like cubes (125-305 GHz) and forecast the power spectra of the fluctuations caused by the various astrophysical components at those frequencies. Depending on our assumptions on the relation between the star formation rate and [CII] luminosity, and the star formation history, our predictions of the za∌6 [CII] power spectrum vary by two orders of magnitude. This highlights how uncertain the predictions are and how important future measurements will be to improve our understanding of this early epoch. SIDES can reproduce the CO shot noise recently measured at a4;100 GHz by the millimeter-wavelength intensity mapping experiment (mmIME). Finally, we compare the contribution of the different astrophysical components at various redshifts to the power spectra. The continuum is by far the brightest, by a factor of three to 100, depending on the frequency. At 300 GHz, the CO foreground power spectrum is higher than the [CII] one for our base scenario. At lower frequencies, the contrast between [CII] and extragalactic foregrounds is even worse. Masking the known galaxies from deep surveys should allow us to reduce the foregrounds to 20% of the [CII] power spectrum up to z∌ 6.5. However, this masking method will not be sufficient at higher redshifts. The code and the products of our simulation are released publicly, and can be used for both intensity mapping experiments and submillimeter continuum and line surveys

    Air pollution exposure estimation using dispersion modelling and continuous monitoring data in a prospective birth cohort study in the Netherlands

    Previous studies suggest that pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution. A prospective cohort study in pregnant women and their children enables identification of the specific effects and critical periods. This paper describes the design of air pollution exposure assessment for participants of the Generation R Study, a population-based prospective cohort study from early pregnancy onwards in 9778 women in the Netherlands. Individual exposures to PM10 and NO2 levels at the home address were estimated for mothers and children, using a combination of advanced dispersion modelling and continuous monitoring data, taking into account the spatial and temporal variation in air pollution concentrations. Full residential history was considered. We observed substantial spatial and temporal variation in air pollution exposure levels. The Generation R Study provides unique possibilities to examine effects of short- and long-term air pollution exposure on various maternal and childhood outcomes and to identify potential critical windows of exposure
