    Ammonia electrocatalytic synthesis from nitrate

    The interest in electrochemical processes to produce ammonia has increased in recent years. The motivation for this increase is the attempt to reduce the carbon emissions associated with its production, since ammonia is responsible for 1.8% of the global CO2 emissions. Moreover, green ammonia is also seen as a possible transportation fuel in various renewable energy transition scenarios. Several electrochemical processes are being investigated such as N2, NO3–, or NO conversion. Since nitrates are an attractive source of nitrogen, due to their role as water contaminants and facility to break N-O bonds, this mini review is focused on the electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia from NO3− reduction. Here, we summarized the important work on reaction mechanisms and electrocatalysts for this reaction.</p

    Long-Term Safety of Growth Hormone in Adults With Growth Hormone Deficiency:Overview of 15 809 GH-Treated Patients

    Context Data on long-term safety of growth hormone (GH) replacement in adults with GH deficiency (GHD) are needed. Objective We aimed to evaluate the safety of GH in the full KIMS (Pfizer International Metabolic Database) cohort. Methods The worldwide, observational KIMS study included adults and adolescents with confirmed GHD. Patients were treated with GH (Genotropin [somatropin]; Pfizer, NY) and followed through routine clinical practice. Adverse events (AEs) and clinical characteristics (eg, lipid profile, glucose) were collected. Results A cohort of 15 809 GH-treated patients were analyzed (mean follow-up of 5.3 years). AEs were reported in 51.2% of patients (treatment-related in 18.8%). Crude AE rate was higher in patients who were older, had GHD due to pituitary/hypothalamic tumors, or adult-onset GHD. AE rate analysis adjusted for age, gender, etiology, and follow-up time showed no correlation with GH dose. A total of 606 deaths (3.8%) were reported (146 by neoplasms, 71 by cardiac/vascular disorders, 48 by cerebrovascular disorders). Overall, de novo cancer incidence was comparable to that in the general population (standard incidence ratio 0.92; 95% CI, 0.83-1.01). De novo cancer risk was significantly lower in patients with idiopathic/congenital GHD (0.64; 0.43-0.91), but similar in those with pituitary/hypothalamic tumors or other etiologies versus the general population. Neither adult-onset nor childhood-onset GHD was associated with increased de novo cancer risks. Neutral effects were observed in lipids/fasting blood glucose levels. Conclusion These final KIMS cohort data support the safety of long-term GH replacement in adults with GHD as prescribed in routine clinical practice

    A multi-technique approach to study the microstructural properties of tin-based transparent conductive oxides

    Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are semiconductor-like materials that exhibit high electrical conductivity and high optical transparency combined. They are adopted in various applications ranging from gas sensors, to electrochromic windows, to photovoltaic cells. Indium-based TCOs represent the industry standard. Nevertheless, indium is among the less abundant elements in the earth crust and forecasts based on its current consumption envisage an urgent need to replace it. Tin-based TCOs are a promising alternative, since their opto- electronic characteristics mimic the ones of indium-based materials. This thesis aims to investigate the link between optoelectronic and microstructural properties of tin dioxide and zinc tin oxide (ZTO) with a composition Zn0.05Sn0.30O0.65 and their stability when submitted to thermal treatments. Indeed, lots of practi- cal applications require the TCO to operate in high temperature conditions. To conduct this study, a combination of analytical techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X- ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed. Amorphous SnO2 and ZTO were deposited by RF sputtering and annealed up to 1050°C in different atmospheres. The influence of annealing temperature and atmosphere were decoupled and led us to an in-depth comprehension of the mechanisms governing the optoelectronic properties of both materials. When annealed in air, between room temperature and 300°C, ZTO exhibits increased mobility and carrier concentration with respect to the as-deposited state. This increase, investigated with DSC, was ascribed to a structural relaxation that allows point defects to release electrons in conduction band. Between 300°C and 500°C atmospheric oxygen passivates oxygen vacancies, drastically decreasing the carrier concentration and therefore causing a large drop of the conductivity. EPR experiments allowed to ascribe the drop in conductivity to the decrease of carrier concentration, which occurs slightly before the phase change. At 570°C (and 930°C for the case of vacuum annealing) the phase change occurs and the ZTO crystallizes in the rutile form of SnO2. The material becomes completely insulating. When the temperature is increased to 1050°C, evaporation of zinc is observed. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of ZTO at high temperature, a doping strategy was implemented starting from DFT calculations conducted by a partner group, who screened among the entire periodic table, which elements are the best candidates to act as n-dopants for ZTO. Bromine and iodine were retained, since they were found to be the most energetically favorable to become substitutional defects for a tin site. An exploratory doping route is therefore presented and the treated samples analyzed with TEM, EDX and UV-VIS-IR spectroscopy. Finally, the structural properties of an indium-based TCO (zirconium-doped indium oxide) were investigated and used as a benchmark to propose a crystallization model for the tin-based, as well as the indium-based materials.     Comprehensive dissection of prevalence rates, sex differences, and blood level-dependencies of clozapine-associated adverse drug reactions

    Clozapine is often underused due to concerns about adverse drug reactions (ADRs) but studies into their prevalences are inconclusive. We therefore comprehensively examined prevalences of clozapineassociated ADRs in individuals with schizophrenia and demographic and clinical factors associated with their occurrence. Data from a multi-center study (n=698 participants) were collected. The mean number of ADRs during clozapine treatment was 4.8, with 2.4% of participants reporting no ADRs. The most common ADRs were hypersalivation (74.6%), weight gain (69.3%), and increased sleep necessity (65.9%), all of which were more common in younger participants. Participants with lower BMI prior to treatment were more likely to experience significant weight gain (>10%). Constipation occurred more frequently with higher clozapine blood levels and doses. There were no differences in ADR prevalence rates between participants receiving clozapine monotherapy and polytherapy. These findings emphasize the high prevalence of clozapine-associated ADRs and highlight several demographic and clinical factors contributing to their occurrence. By understanding these factors, clinicians can better anticipate and manage clozapine-associated ADRs, leading to improved treatment outcomes and patient well-being

    Sex difference and intra-operative tidal volume: Insights from the LAS VEGAS study

    BACKGROUND: One key element of lung-protective ventilation is the use of a low tidal volume (VT). A sex difference in use of low tidal volume ventilation (LTVV) has been described in critically ill ICU patients.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether a sex difference in use of LTVV also exists in operating room patients, and if present what factors drive this difference.DESIGN, PATIENTS AND SETTING: This is a posthoc analysis of LAS VEGAS, a 1-week worldwide observational study in adults requiring intra-operative ventilation during general anaesthesia for surgery in 146 hospitals in 29 countries.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Women and men were compared with respect to use of LTVV, defined as VT of 8 ml kg-1 or less predicted bodyweight (PBW). A VT was deemed 'default' if the set VT was a round number. A mediation analysis assessed which factors may explain the sex difference in use of LTVV during intra-operative ventilation.RESULTS: This analysis includes 9864 patients, of whom 5425 (55%) were women. A default VT was often set, both in women and men; mode VT was 500 ml. Median [IQR] VT was higher in women than in men (8.6 [7.7 to 9.6] vs. 7.6 [6.8 to 8.4] ml kg-1 PBW, P &lt; 0.001). Compared with men, women were twice as likely not to receive LTVV [68.8 vs. 36.0%; relative risk ratio 2.1 (95% CI 1.9 to 2.1), P &lt; 0.001]. In the mediation analysis, patients' height and actual body weight (ABW) explained 81 and 18% of the sex difference in use of LTVV, respectively; it was not explained by the use of a default VT.CONCLUSION: In this worldwide cohort of patients receiving intra-operative ventilation during general anaesthesia for surgery, women received a higher VT than men during intra-operative ventilation. The risk for a female not to receive LTVV during surgery was double that of males.     Higher COVID-19 pneumonia risk associated with anti-IFN-α than with anti-IFN-ω auto-Abs in children

    We found that 19 (10.4%) of 183 unvaccinated children hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia had autoantibodies (auto-Abs) neutralizing type I IFNs (IFN-alpha 2 in 10 patients: IFN-alpha 2 only in three, IFN-alpha 2 plus IFN-omega in five, and IFN-alpha 2, IFN-omega plus IFN-beta in two; IFN-omega only in nine patients). Seven children (3.8%) had Abs neutralizing at least 10 ng/ml of one IFN, whereas the other 12 (6.6%) had Abs neutralizing only 100 pg/ml. The auto-Abs neutralized both unglycosylated and glycosylated IFNs. We also detected auto-Abs neutralizing 100 pg/ml IFN-alpha 2 in 4 of 2,267 uninfected children (0.2%) and auto-Abs neutralizing IFN-omega in 45 children (2%). The odds ratios (ORs) for life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia were, therefore, higher for auto-Abs neutralizing IFN-alpha 2 only (OR [95% CI] = 67.6 [5.7-9,196.6]) than for auto-Abs neutralizing IFN-. only (OR [95% CI] = 2.6 [1.2-5.3]). ORs were also higher for auto-Abs neutralizing high concentrations (OR [95% CI] = 12.9 [4.6-35.9]) than for those neutralizing low concentrations (OR [95% CI] = 5.5 [3.1-9.6]) of IFN-omega and/or IFN-alpha 2

    Rapidly Progressive Severe Vascular Calcification Sparing the Kidney Allograft Following Warfarin Initiation

    We describe a case of rapid onset of vascular calcification coincident with the initiation of warfarin therapy in a kidney transplant patient. Calcification developed within the media of the blood vessel wall, with relative intimal sparing. Medium and small sized arteries were affected, but the aorta was mostly free of calcifications, suggesting a differential response to warfarin between the intima and media as well as between different vascular beds. In addition, unlike the highly calcified native kidney’s vessels, the kidney allograft was not calcified, suggesting local, genetically determined, mechanisms in preventing vascular calcification.
