Phenylketonuria (PKU) requires tight control to prevent neurocognitive impairment but reports show that patients may present mild cognitive defects related to higher impulsivity. We hypothesize that chronic intervention may influence the parents and child bonding and the child´s resources to face problems. To describe the PKU parenting styles perceived by the children (PS) and their coping strategies (CS) assessing their relationship with impulsivity, 30 early diagnosed and adequately treated PKU children and 30 non PKU aged-paired controls (CG) were compared. The Argentine Children´s Coping Questionnaire, Argentine Scale Perception of the Relationship with Parents, WISC IV Comprehension Subtest, and CPT II test were administered. PKU PS were based on control: strict to pathologic in the mother and acceptable in the father (both p<0.05 vs. CG). Children significantly sought greater support and showed less emotional control when facing conflicts. These characteristics positively correlated with maternal control r:.383 and r:.398 (both p<0.05). Impulsivity was higher in PKU (p<0.05) but didn´t associate with PS or CS. Maternal strict control wasn´t linked to the higher impulsivity found (possibly neurobiologically based). Nevertheless, if both factors are present, patients may develop a psychological and/or behavioral trait of greater dependency and impulsivity that must be considered in their follow-up.Fil: Pardo Campos, Maria Laura. Differences were detected in the gene expression of strains of E. histolytica using RNA (RAP-PCR) and DNA fingerprinting (RAPD). Analysis of the electrophoretic profiles of the gels revealed some polymorphic markers that could be used in the individual characterization of the strains. The 260 bands generated by using five different primers for RAP-PCR, as well as RAPD, were employed in the construction of dendograms. The dendogram obtained based on the RAPD products permitted the distinction of symptomatic and asymptomatic isolates, as well the correlation between the polymorphism exhibited and the virulence of the strains. The dendogram obtained for the RAP-PCR products did not show a correlation with the virulence of the strains but revealed a high degree of intraspecific transcriptional variability that could be related to other biological features, whether or not these are involved in the pathogenesis of amebiasis.

    Are solar neutrino oscillations robust?

    Get PDF
The robustness of the large mixing angle (LMA) oscillation (OSC) interpretation of the solar neutrino data is considered in a more general framework where non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) are present. Such interactions may be regarded as a generic feature of models of neutrino mass. The 766.3 ton-yr data sample of the KamLAND collaboration are included in the analysis, paying attention to the background from the reaction ^13C(\alpha,n) ^16O. Similarly, the latest solar neutrino fluxes from the SNO collaboration are included. In addition to the solution which holds in the absence of NSI (LMA-I) there is a 'dark-side' solution (LMA-D) with sin^2 theta_Sol = 0.70, essentially degenerate with the former, and another light-side solution (LMA-0) allowed only at 97% CL. More precise KamLAND reactor measurements will not resolve the ambiguity in the determination of the solar neutrino mixing angle theta_Sol, as they are expected to constrain mainly Delta m^2. We comment on the complementary role of atmospheric, laboratory (e.g. CHARM) and future solar neutrino experiments in lifting the degeneracy between the LMA-I and LMA-D solutions. In particular, we show how the LMA-D solution induced by the simplest NSI between neutrinos and down-type-quarks-only is in conflict with the combination of current atmospheric data and data of the CHARM experiment. We also mention that establishing the issue of robustness of the oscillation picture in the most general case will require further experiments, such as those involving low energy solar neutrinos.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures; Final version to appear in JHE

Rapid detection of bacterial presence on implantable medical devices isessential to prevent biofilm formation, which consists of densely packedbacteria colonies able to withstand antibiotic-mediated killing. In this work, asmart approach is presented to integrate electrochemical sensors fordetecting bacterial infections in biomedical implants made of isotacticpolypropylene (i-PP) using chemical assembly. The electrochemical detectionis based on the capacity of conducting polymers (CPs) to detect extracellularnicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) released from cellular respirationof bacteria, which allows distinguishing prokaryotic from eukaryotic cells.Oxygen plasma-functionalized free-standing i-PP, coated with a layer(≈1.1 μm in thickness) of CP nanoparticles obtained by oxidativepolymerization, is used as working electrode for the anodic polymerization ofa second CP layer (≈8.2 μm in thickness), which provides very highelectrochemical activity and stability. The resulting layered material, i-PPf/CP2,detects the electro-oxidation of NADH in physiological media with asensitivity 417 μA cm−2and a detection limit up to 0.14×10−3m, which isbelow the concentration of extracellular NADH found for bacterial cultures ofbiofilm-positive and biofilm-negative strains.Authors acknowledge MINECO/FEDER (RTI2018-098951-B-I00), the Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (2017SGR359), and B. Disentangling the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Behavior of Plasmonic Resonances Near the Interband Transition

The photoexcitation of plasmonic nanostructures with ultrashort laser pulses allows for elucidating the mechanisms underlying the ultrafast nonlinear optical response of such systems, gaining insight into the fundamental processes triggered by light absorption at the nanoscale. To date, the complex temporal and spectral features of the photoinduced response are not fully understood, especially when the photon energies are close to the interband transitions of the metallic medium. Herein, the effects of photoexcitation of plasmonic nanostructures are studied by resorting to a combinaion of broadband transient absorption spectroscopy and semiclassical nonlinear simulations of the energy relaxation processes following illumination. The proposed approach enables an in-depth disentanglement of all the contributions to the ultrafast transient optical response of supported gold nanocrystals. From these methods, the apparent transient blue shift of the localized plasmon resonance observed in the pump-probe signals is rationalized as an interplay between different and spectrally dispersed permittivity modulations, instead of a simple negative permittivity change, as it could be concluded based on the Fröhlich condition. The results provide a comprehensive understanding of the thermo-modulational nonlinearities of plasmonic nanostructures exhibiting resonances close to the interband transition threshold

Design, characterization and in vitro evaluation of antifungal polymeric films

The objective of the present paper was the development and the full characterization of antifungal films. Econazole nitrate (ECN) was loaded in a polymeric matrix formed by chitosan (CH) and carbopol 971NF (CB). Polyethylene glycol 400 and sorbitol were used as plasticizing agents. The mechanical properties of films were poorer when the drug was loaded, probably because crystals of ENC produces network outages and therefore reduces the polymeric interactions between the polymers. Polymers–ECN and CH–CB interactions were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetry analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA-TGA). ECN did not show structure alterations when loaded into the films. In scanning electron microphotographs and atomic force microscopy analysis, films prepared with CB showed an evident wrinkle pattern probably due to the strong interactions between the polymers, which were observed by FTIR and DTA-TGA. The in vitro activity of the formulations against Candida krusei and Candida parapsilosis was twice as greater as the commercial cream, probably as a result of the antifungal combination of the drug with the CH activity. All these results suggest that these polymeric films containing ECN are potential candidates in view of alternatives dosages forms for the treatment of the yeast assayed.Fil: Real, Daniel Andres.
