Lightweight Event-based Optical Flow Estimation via Iterative Deblurring

Inspired by frame-based methods, state-of-the-art event-based optical flow networks rely on the explicit computation of correlation volumes, which are expensive to compute and store on systems with limited processing budget and memory. To this end, we introduce IDNet (Iterative Deblurring Network), a lightweight yet well-performing event-based optical flow network without using correlation volumes. IDNet leverages the unique spatiotemporally continuous nature of event streams to propose an alternative way of implicitly capturing correlation through iterative refinement and motion deblurring. Our network does not compute correlation volumes but rather utilizes a recurrent network to maximize the spatiotemporal correlation of events iteratively. We further propose two iterative update schemes: "ID" which iterates over the same batch of events, and "TID" which iterates over time with streaming events in an online fashion. Benchmark results show the former "ID" scheme can reach close to state-of-the-art performance with 33% of savings in compute and 90% in memory footprint, while the latter "TID" scheme is even more efficient promising 83% of compute savings and 15 times less latency at the cost of 18% of performance drop

E-learning in “innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship”: Exploring the new opportunities and challenges of technologies

    Get PDF
Companies and society demand professionals be able to provide creative solutions with added value as well as to implement them in order to face the arising challenges in the increasingly dynamic environment. Although the transversal competence “Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship” is essential for engineers that should find innovative solutions to problems, teachers find many difficulties when training and evaluating their students in the scope of the regular courses: large groups, very adjusted time to technical contents. In this context, the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) at Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) is aware of the opportunities offered by new information and communication technologies to support teachers in this task while enhancing students’ generic outcomes. For this reason, an e-learning platform has been created on this competence, that offers valuable resources to students to implement this competence throughout the assigned course tasks, and supports teachers prompted to train and evaluate this transversal competence. With this platform, the authors aim to contribute to the still neglected educational aspect of entrepreneurship and address for the first time in an e-learning system its relationship with innovation and creativity

Self-assembly of Clicked Star-Shaped Triazines into Functional Nanostructures

Two non-amphiphilic star-shaped 2, 4, 6-tris(1, 2, 3-triazol-4-yl)-1, 3, 5-triazines showing different behavior in terms of self-assembly and luminescent properties are described. They aggregate in the liquid phase to form low-dimensional nanostructures with a variety of morphologies, such as spherical particles, one-hole hollow spheres, toroids, twisted fibers or helical nanotubes, just by varying the conditions of a straightforward reprecipitation method. Aggregation has an opposite effect concerning the fluorescent properties of the proposed compounds, either causing the enhancement or the quenching of the emission after the self-assembly. Quantum chemical calculations have been also performed to assist in the structural and electronic characterization of the two star-shaped compounds

UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends, prepared by in situ polymerization: synthetic aspects and characterization

    Get PDF
This work covers the synthesis and characterization of in-reactor Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/ High Density Polyethylene, UHMWPE/HDPE, blends by in situ polymerization in a single reactor, through dual catalyst immobilization. These blends are synthesized combining two different catalysts (one for each targeted molar mass) co-immobilized in mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous, SBA-15, particles. First, the ethylene polymerization behavior is investigated, under different polymerization conditions. Then, studies on the thermal, mechanical and rheological characteristics of the produced in-reactor blends are presented and their performance is compared and discussed in a comprehensive way. Moreover, the effect of different filler contents on the properties exhibited by the resulting materials is investigated. Results have shown that these in-reactor UHMWPE/HDPE blends exhibit a complex thermal, mechanical and rheological behavior, which depends mainly on the proportion between the two polymer components and on the amount of SBA-15.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Bird roadkill occurences in Aragon, Spain

The increase in road networks and vehicular traffic has posed a major threat to vertebrates over the last century. Although it is difficult to determine the annual number of avian–vehicle collisions, 2 to 9 million roadkills have been estimated for Europe, with numbers varying from country to country. Few studies have been conducted at a national or regional level in Spain. In this study we used data from La Alfranca Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre database to determine location, season and incidence of avian–vehicle collisions in the autonomous county of Aragon (Spain). A total of 643 wild birds representing 71 species were killed on roads between 2012 and 2014. Nine of these species have a high incidence of avian–vehicle collisions, four a moderate incidence, and 57 a low incidence. The species with the highest incidence was the griffon vulture (120 individuals). Spatial distribution of avian–vehicle collisions was heterogeneous, and the incidence was highest in July, August and September. We identified 41 reas of high roadkill occurrence, using a number of roadkills per km index (RI): 28 in the province of Zaragoza, 9 in Huesca and 4 in Teruel. Management strategies are proposed to reduce this threat on wild birds

Implicaciones de la realizatividad pragmática en la construcción del liderazgo

    Get PDF
This study relates the pragmatic aspects of performative speech act with the skills required by the leader to management leadership. Thus, both dimensions are analyzed from a sample of oral communicative interaction in which the performative uses are determined from the "visibility" or "whitewash", with reference conventionalized structures that can alternate with illocution modalized speech act. Such a confrontation provides trends on the linguistic behavior of a leader. The performative speech act relate to interpersonal skills focused leadership in action, while the constative speech act are linked with reflective-evaluative style at a level of intrapersonal interaction
