The Influence of Emotional Regulation and Cognitive Flexibility on Sleep Habits in Spanish Children and Adolescents through the Lens of Parents.
Background: Previous research studies have suggested the importance of studying the
relationship between emotional regulation and sleep habits. Some investigations have especially focused
on how emotional regulation could impact sleep habits in children and adolescents. Therefore,
these researchers have stated there exists a two-way direction in this relationship. Objective: This
study aimed to analyze the influence of emotional regulation on sleep habits in Spanish children
and adolescents and the mediating role of anxiety in this relationship. Method: Participants were
953 Spanish parents who completed the assessment protocol according to their children and adolescents’
information. Results: The results revealed moderate–strong correlations between emotional
regulation problems and sleep habit disturbances (r = 0.375, p < 0.001), trait (r = 0.488, p < 0.001)
anxiety, and state (r = 0.589, p < 0.001) anxiety. Additionally, emotional regulation showed a direct
impact on sleep habits ( = 0.011, p = 0.005). Trait and state anxiety demonstrated a significant mediating
role in the relationship between emotional regulation and sleep habits. Conclusions: Emotional
regulation may have an impact on sleep habits during childhood and adolescence, suggesting the
importance of early intervention focused on the emotions management and the prevention of sleep

El Puzle i l'aprenentatge de la programació
Es descriu una experiència formalitzada d’aprenentatge cooperatiu mitjançant la utilització de la metodologia del puzle. Concretament, s’utilitza el puzle com una eina de suport en una assignatura organitzada d’acord amb l’estratègia de l’aprenentatge basat en projectes.
La metodologia del puzle s’ha aplicat a tots els grups de les assignatures següents des del curs 2004-2005: 1. Enginyeria Tècnica de Telecomunicació, Introducció als Computadors (Q1 de primer curs, 4,5 crèdits) i Laboratori de Programació (Q2 de primer curs, 4,5 crèdits), i 2. Graus en Enginyeria de Sistemes de Telecomunicació i en Enginyeria Telemàtica, Introducció als Ordinadors (Q1 de primer curs, 6 crèdits ECTS) i Projecte de Programació (Q2 de primer curs, 6 crèdits ECTS). Com a part d’assignatures basades en l’aprenentatge basat en projectes es va començar a experimentar en dues assignatures a l’Escola d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació i Aeroespacial de Castelldefels (EETAC), en el marc de les proves pilot d’adaptació de titulacions a l'espai europeu d'educació superior (EEES), impulsades per l’antic Departament d'Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació (DURSI) de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Posteriorment es va seguir aplicant aquest model en els nous graus. Aquests anys d’experimentació ens han proporcionat una bona quantitat de resultats i conclusions.Peer Reviewe

New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele
ADHD and Sluggish Cognitive Tempo: Comparing Executive Functioning Response Patterns
The aim of the present study was to describe and compare the specific profiles of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) through the Hybrid Model of Executive Functioning (HMEF). The total sample of 1049 subjects, aged 6 to 18 years (M = 10.75; SD = 3.20), were classified into a non-pathologic group, an ADHD group and an SCT group, and assessed using the short version of the Barkley Deficit in Executive Functions Scale for Children and Adolescents (BDEFS-CA). The results revealed significant differences between the three groups in all executive domains (non-pathologic < SCT < ADHD). While the ADHD group demonstrated a consistently high profile of difficulties in each subscale, the SCT group showed an irregular profile of difficulties, with middle and low scores, depending on the executive function. Although the SCT group’s score was far away from the ADHD group’s score for Self-Motivation, Emotions Self-Regulation and Self-Restraint and Inhibition, the two groups’ scores were very close for Time Self-Management and Self-Organization and Problem Solving. Accordingly, through logistic regression analyses, the SCT group was exclusively related to these last two executive domains; however, the ADHD group was strongly associated with almost every executive function. The findings suggest that the short version of the BDEFS-CA discriminates between both disorders, supporting psycho-pedagogical assessment and differential diagnosis

Anxiety as a mediador between executive functions and sleep habits in children and adolescents.
Introduction. Upon the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic, levels of anxiety have increased considerably in children and adolescents. According to authors, alterations in executive functioning are also associated with disturbances in health habits, such as sleep in children and adolescents. Although the scientific literature has deeply examined the influence of health habits on executive functions, little is known about the impact of executive functions on sleep habits in youngsters. Objective. This investigation analyzes the relationship between anxiety, sleep habits and executive functions, as well as anxiety and executive functions as potential predictors of sleep habits, and the mediating role of anxiety in the effects of executive functions on sleep habits. Methods. An online questionnaire was administered to 953 parents of children and adolescents (53.7% boys, n=512) with a mean age of 10.86 (DT=3.29). Parents filled the questionnaire out based on their children’s information. Results. Alterations in executive functions correlated strongly/moderately, positively and significantly with anxiety (0.559, p<0.001) and sleep habits disturbances (0.375, p<0.001). Anxiety (β=0.308, t=8.837, p<0.001, [0.100, 0.158]) and executive functions (β=0.203, t=5.816, p<0.001, [0.030, 0.060]) appear to be potential predictors of sleep habits (R2=0.204, F=33.829, p<0.001). Anxiety appears to mediate in the relationship between executive functions and sleep habits (β=0.379, SE=0.005, [0.029, 0.047]). Conclusions. Our findings confirm the relationship between the study variables. Specifically, our analyses show anxiety and executive functions as predictors of sleep habits, and the potential role of mediation of anxiety between executive functions and sleep habits in children and adolescents.Universidad de Málaga. Anxiety, sleep habits and executive function during the COVID-19 pandemic through parents’ perception: a longitudinal study
The present study therefore aims to examine trait and state anxiety, sleep habits and executive functioning during 1 year and a half of the COVID-19 pandemic in children and adolescents through the lens of parents. Assessments were conducted at three different times: April 2020 (T1), October 2020 (T2) and October 2021 (T3). The main sample included 953 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years, and scales were used to assess anxiety (STAIC), sleep habits (BEARS) and executive functioning (BRIEF-2). The results showed that 6 months after the outbreak of the pandemic, state and trait anxiety, sleep disturbances and executive dysfunctions increased significantly. One and a half year later, trait anxiety and sleep disturbances have been maintained, while state anxiety and executive dysfunction have decreased their scores obtaining scores similar to those of April 2020. In conclusion, there has been a further decrease in children and adolescents’ mental health since the beginning of the pandemic, and it seems to remain at the present time, such as trait anxiety as a part of the personality

Common variants in Alzheimer’s disease and risk stratification by polygenic risk scores
Genetic discoveries of Alzheimer’s disease are the drivers of our understanding, and together with polygenetic risk stratification can contribute towards planning of feasible and efficient preventive and curative clinical trials. We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer’s disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease
