Modification of Heisenberg uncertainty relations in non-commutative Snyder space-time geometry
We show that the Euclidean Snyder non-commutative space implies infinitely
many different physical predictions. The distinct frameworks are specified by
generalized uncertainty relations underlying deformed Heisenberg algebras.
Considering the one-dimensional case in the minisuperspace arena, the bouncing
Universe dynamics of loop quantum cosmology can be recovered.Comment: 5 pages; title changed, to appear in PR
Matter instability in modified gravity
The Dolgov-Kawasaki instability discovered in the matter sector of the
modified gravity scenario incorporating a 1/R correction to Einstein gravity is
studied in general f(R) theories. A stability condition is found in the metric
version of these theories to help ruling out models that are unviable from the
theoretical point of view.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev. D. In the revised version,
an error concerning the Palatini version of these theories has been corrected
and the references update
Black holes in scalar-tensor gravity
Hawking has proven that black holes which are stationary as the endpoint of
gravitational collapse in Brans--Dicke theory (without a potential) are no
different than in general relativity. We extend this proof to the much more
general class of scalar-tensor and f(R) gravity theories, without assuming any
symmetries apart from stationarity.Comment: v1: 4 pages; v2: typos corrected, published versio
The Hawking temperature of expanding cosmological black holes
In the context of a debate on the correct expression of the Hawking
temperature of an expanding cosmological black hole, we show that the correct
expression in terms of the Hawking-Hayward quasi-local energy m of the hole is
T=1/(8\pi m(t)). This expression holds for comoving black holes and agrees with
a recent proposal by Saida, Harada, and Maeda.Comment: 5 latex pages, to appear in Phys. Rev. D. Some references adde
Are stealth scalar fields stable?
Non-gravitating (stealth) scalar fields associated with Minkowski space in
scalar-tensor gravity are examined. Analytical solutions for both non-minimally
coupled scalar field theory and for Brans-Dicke gravity are studied and their
stability with respect to tensor perturbations is assessed using a covariant
and gauge-invariant formalism developed for alternative gravity. For
Brans-Dicke solutions, the stability with respect to homogeneous perturbations
is also studied. There are regions of parameter space corresponding to
stability and other regions corresponding to instability.Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, no figures, to appear in Phys. Rev,
Subnormalized states and trace-nonincreasing maps
We investigate the set of completely positive, trace-nonincreasing linear
maps acting on the set M_N of mixed quantum states of size N. Extremal point of
this set of maps are characterized and its volume with respect to the
Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean) measure is computed explicitly for an arbitrary N.
The spectra of partially reduced rescaled dynamical matrices associated with
trace-nonincreasing completely positive maps belong to the N-cube inscribed in
the set of subnormalized states of size N. As a by-product we derive the
measure in M_N induced by partial trace of mixed quantum states distributed
uniformly with respect to HS-measure in .Comment: LaTeX, 21 pages, 4 Encapsuled PostScript figures, 1 tabl
Quantum cryptography with finite resources: unconditional security bound for discrete-variable protocols with one-way post-processing
We derive a bound for the security of QKD with finite resources under one-way
post-processing, based on a definition of security that is composable and has
an operational meaning. While our proof relies on the assumption of collective
attacks, unconditional security follows immediately for standard protocols like
Bennett-Brassard 1984 and six-states. For single-qubit implementations of such
protocols, we find that the secret key rate becomes positive when at least
N\sim 10^5 signals are exchanged and processed. For any other discrete-variable
protocol, unconditional security can be obtained using the exponential de
Finetti theorem, but the additional overhead leads to very pessimistic
estimates
A Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi cosmological wormhole
We present a new analytical solution of the Einstein field equations
describing a wormhole shell of zero thickness joining two
Lema{\i}tre-Tolman-Bondi universes, with no radial accretion. The material on
the shell satisfies the energy conditions and, at late times, the shell becomes
comoving with the dust-dominated cosmic substratum.Comment: 5 pages, latex, no figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Harmful Interference of Detoxifying Diets and Nutraceuticals with Adherence to Abemaciclib in Advanced Estrogen Receptor-Positive, Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2-Negative Breast Cancer: A Case Report
Many cancer patients use integrative therapies with a combination of natural products and diets. In the Western world, integrative medicine is often not shared with oncologists even during antineoplastic treatments. This behavior stems from the unmet needs of cancer patients who may feel oncologists' underestimation of their symptoms and spiritual aspects. This case report demonstrates the potential harm of inadequate diet and nutraceutical intake in a 68-year-old woman with metastatic estrogen receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor-2-negative breast cancer. Her care team recommended hormone therapy with abemaciclib plus fulvestrant. Her diarrhea started after 10 days of therapy and did not disappear, despite the use of loperamide, causing a significant reduction in adherence and dose intensity of abemaciclib. The patient finally disclosed to her oncologist she was following a detoxifying diet and taking several nutraceuticals. Her diarrhea was correlated with abemaciclib but most probably exacerbated and prolonged by the diet. Evaluation of disease after 3 months showed progressive disease. Integrative medicine should be in the multidisciplinary management of cancer patients to avoid potentially harmful events and ameliorate patients' quality of life in a holistic approach
