Effect of Coulomb interactions on the optical properties of doped graphene
Recent optical conductivity experiments of doped graphene in the infrared
regime reveal a strong background in the energy region between the intra and
interband transitions difficult to explain within conventional pictures. We
propose a phenomenological model taking into account the marginal Fermi liquid
nature of the quasiparticles in graphene near the neutrality point that can
explain qualitatively the observed features. We also study the electronic Raman
signal and suggest that it will also be anomalous.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Exponentially Modified QCD Coupling
We present a specific class of models for an infrared-finite analytic QCD
coupling, such that at large space-like energy scales the coupling differs from
the perturbative one by less than any inverse power of the energy scale. This
condition is motivated by the ITEP Operator Product Expansion philosophy.
Allowed by the ambiguity in the analytization of the perturbative coupling, the
proposed class of couplings has three parameters. In the intermediate energy
region, the proposed coupling has low loop-level and renormalization scheme
dependence. The present modification of perturbative QCD must be considered as
a phenomenological attempt, with the aim of enlarging the applicability range
of the theory of the strong interactions at low energies.Comment: two references adde
On stratification for spaces with Noetherian mod cohomology
Let be a topological space with Noetherian mod cohomology and let be the commutative ring spectrum of -valued cochains on . The goal of this paper is to exhibit conditions under which the category of module spectra on is stratified in the sense of Benson, Iyengar, Krause, providing a classification of all its localizing subcategories. We establish stratification in this sense for classifying spaces of a large class of topological groups including Kac--Moody groups as well as whenever admits an -space structure. More generally, using Lannes' theory we prove that stratification for is equivalent to a condition that generalizes Chouinard's theorem for finite groups. In particular, this relates the generalized telescope conjecture in this setting to a question in unstable homotopy theory
The surface-state of the topological insulator BiSe revealed by cyclotron resonance
To date transport measurements of topological insulators have been dominated
by the conductivity of the bulk, leading to substantial difficulties in
resolving the properties of the surface. To this end, we use high magnetic
field, rf- and microwave-spectroscopy to selectively couple to the surface
conductivity of BiSe at high frequency. In the frequency range of a few
GHz we observe a crossover from quantum oscillations indicative of a small 3D
Fermi surface, to cyclotron resonance indicative of a 2D surface state
Structure and Subhalo Population of Halos in a Self-Interacting Dark Matter Cosmology
We study the structure of Milky Way (MW)- and cluster-sized halos in a Lambda
Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology with self-interacting (SI) dark particles. The
cross section per unit of particle mass has the form sigma =
sig_0(1/v_100)^alpha, where sig_0 is a constant in units of cm^2/gr and v_100
is the relative velocity in units of 100 km/s. Different values for sigma with
alpha= 0 or 1 were used. For small values of sigma = const. (sig_0<0.5), the
core density of the halos at z=0 is typically higher at a given mass for lower
values of sig_0 or, at a given sig_0, for lower masses. For values of sig_0 as
high as 3.0, the halos may undergo the gravothermal catastrophe before z=0.
When alpha = 1, the core density of cluster- and MW-sized halos is similar.
Using sigma = 0.5-1.0x(1/v_100), our predictions agree with the central
densities and the core scaling laws of halos both inferred from the
observations of dwarf and LSB galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The cumulative
Vmax-functions of subhalos in MW-sized halos with (sig_0,alpha) = (0.1,0.0),
(0.5,0.0) and (0.5,1.0) agree roughly with observations (luminous satellites)
for Vmax > 30 km/s, while at Vmax = 20 km/s the functions are a factor 5-8
higher, similar to the CDM predictions. The halos with SI have slightly more
specific angular momentum at a given mass shell and are rounder than their CDM
counterparts. We conclude that the introduction of SI particles with sigma
\propto 1/v_100 may remedy the cuspy core problem of the CDM cosmogony, while
the subhalo population number remains similar to that of the CDM halos.Comment: To appear in ApJ, December 20, 2002. We added plots showing the

Optical-conductivity sum rule in cuprates and unconventional charge density waves: a short review
We begin with an overview of the experimental results for the temperature and
doping dependences of the optical-conductivity spectral weight in cuprate
superconductors across the whole phase diagram. Then we discuss recent attempts
to explain the observed behavior of the spectral weight using reduced and full

Field-induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of triplons up to 8 K in Sr3Cr2O8
Single crystals of the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 have been grown for the
first time. Magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetocaloric effect data up to
65 T reveal magnetic order between applied fields of Hc1 ~ 30.4 T and Hc2 ~ 62
T. This field-induced order persists up to ~ 8 K at H ~ 44 T, the highest
observed in any quantum magnet where Hc2 is experimentally-accessible. We fit
the temperature-field phase diagram boundary close to Hc1 using the expression
Tc = A(H-Hc1)^v. The exponent v = 0.65(2), obtained at temperatures much
smaller than 8 K, is that of the 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) universality
class. This finding strongly suggests that Sr3Cr2O8 is a new realization of a
triplon BEC where the universal regimes corresponding to both Hc1 and Hc2 are

Collective motional resonances and instabilities of an electron cloud stored in a Penning trap
We have experimentally investigated the behavior of an electron cloud confined in a Penning trap at weak superimposed magnetic fields. Exciting the motional frequencies of the electrons by an external drive field we found the axial mode split into two components which were identified as center-of-mass and individual electron oscillations. When the trapping potential was varied, rapid electron loss appeared at numerous values of the applied voltage. They are determined by the relation n z ω z + n m ω m =ω c . ω z ,ω m ,ω c are the axial, magnetron, and cyclotron frequency of the trapped electrons, respectively. The reason for this loss is attributed to higher order contributions to the ideal quadrupole trapping potential
Data Portraits and Intermediary Topics: Encouraging Exploration of Politically Diverse Profiles
In micro-blogging platforms, people connect and interact with others.
However, due to cognitive biases, they tend to interact with like-minded people
and read agreeable information only. Many efforts to make people connect with
those who think differently have not worked well. In this paper, we
hypothesize, first, that previous approaches have not worked because they have
been direct -- they have tried to explicitly connect people with those having
opposing views on sensitive issues. Second, that neither recommendation or
presentation of information by themselves are enough to encourage behavioral
change. We propose a platform that mixes a recommender algorithm and a
visualization-based user interface to explore recommendations. It recommends
politically diverse profiles in terms of distance of latent topics, and
displays those recommendations in a visual representation of each user's
personal content. We performed an "in the wild" evaluation of this platform,
and found that people explored more recommendations when using a biased
algorithm instead of ours. In line with our hypothesis, we also found that the
mixture of our recommender algorithm and our user interface, allowed
politically interested users to exhibit an unbiased exploration of the
recommended profiles. Finally, our results contribute insights in two aspects:
first, which individual differences are important when designing platforms
aimed at behavioral change; and second, which algorithms and user interfaces
should be mixed to help users avoid cognitive mechanisms that lead to biased

Improved prediction of the optical properties in pi-conjugated polymers: the case of benzochalcogenodiazole-based copolymers with different heteroatom substitution
Donor−acceptor (D−A) approach to conjugated polymer design has become a widely used method for preparing conjugated polymers with narrow band gaps.1 One outstanding D−A polymer is poly(cyclopentadithiophene)benzothiadiazole, PCPDTBT (P1 in Figure 1), for which power conversion efficiencies in solar cells of 4.5-5.5% are reported.2 In this work, we use resonance Raman (RR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the tuning of the electronic and structural properties of cyclopentadithiophene-benzochalcogenodiazole D−A polymers, wherein a single atom in the benzochalcogenodiazole unit is varied from sulfur to selenium to tellurium (Fig. 1).3 Sophisticated DFT calculations have been carried out using long-range corrected functionals, considering both tuned and default range-separation parameters, aiming at predicting their optical and charge transport properties. In addition, the nature of the electronic excitation is described by analyzing the enhancement pattern in the RR spectra using Raman excitation wavelengths coincident with the various transitions in the copolymers.Universidad de Málaga.
