John Baillie on the theology of revelation

    Get PDF
In his article, Daniel Valentine examines John Baillie’s book, The Idea of Revelation in Recent Thought from the formal perspective of broader historical theology. He sets out the two main topics of Baillie’s study – first, the relation of reason and revelation, and second, propositional views of revelation. Valentine follows Baillie’s thought through to its main conclusions, indicating that Baillie had, perhaps, failed to set his study of these problems in the broader historical context of theological tradition. This paper offers an introduction to the variety of perspectives concerning revelation.Publisher PD

The development of the Omaha Municipal Airfield, 1924-1930

In 1920, American aviation was still in its infancy, a description applicable to every aspect of the industry. The airplanes of this period were delicate, curious, contraptions. Still, these fragile craft, dwarfed by the magnitude of today’s ships, were amazingly efficient, agile, and thrilling methods of transportation. Few realized then what importance these airplanes would have in the future

Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia

A commercially available bulk 4.5 mole percent yttria-(Y2O3) partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was studied by light microscopy, X-ray analysis, microhardness measurement, and fracture toughness testing. The growth of the precipitates and the phase transformations were studied as a function of aging in air at 1500 C. Aging curves were constructed for both the as received and the solution annealed and quenched materials; the curves showed hardness peaks at 1397 and 1517 Kg/sq mm respectively. The rectangular plate shaped tetragonal precipitates were found to have a 110 habit plane. A total of twelve different types of tetragonal precipitates were found. Grinding of the Y2O3 PSZ into powder did not cause a significant amount of metastable tetragonal precipitates to transform into the monoclinc phase, thus indicating that transformation toughening is not a significant mechanism for the material

OBJECTIVES: Increasing multidrug resistance amongst canine pathogenic staphylococci has renewed interest in topical antibacterial therapy for skin infections in the context of responsible veterinary prescribing. We therefore determined the activity in vitro of three clinically relevant topical agents and synergism between two of them against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus aureus. METHODS: The MICs of fusidic acid (n = 199), chlorhexidine (n = 198), miconazole (n = 198) and a 1:1 combination of miconazole/chlorhexidine (n = 198) were determined for canine isolates [50 MRSA and 49 methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP), 50 MSSA and 50 methicillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius (MSSP)] collected from the UK and Germany using an agar dilution method (CLSI VET01-A4). Fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices were calculated to assess the interaction of miconazole with chlorhexidine. RESULTS: MICs of each drug/combination were significantly (P < 0.0005) higher for S. aureus when compared with S. pseudintermedius. Most strains (n = 172) had an MIC of fusidic acid of ≤0.03 mg/L (MIC ≥64 mg/L, n = 5 MRSA). All strains had MICs of chlorhexidine of 0.5–4 mg/L, except for one MRSA (MIC = 8 mg/L). All but four strains had MICs of miconazole of 1–4 mg/L (MIC = 16 mg/L, n = 3; MIC = 256 mg/L, n = 1). Miconazole/chlorhexidine (1:1 ratio) had a synergistic effect against 49/50 MRSA, 31/50 MSSA, 12/49 MRSP and 23/49 MSSP. CONCLUSIONS: Since the majority of these staphylococci, including methicillin-resistant isolates, had MICs that should be readily exceeded by topical skin application of these agents, their therapeutic efficacy for canine superficial pyoderma should be assessed. The synergistic interaction shown in vitro supports further clinical evaluation of miconazole/chlorhexidine combination therapy for staphylococcal infection

Journal ArticleWe have used a multitude of linear and nonlinear cw optical spectroscopies to study the optical properties of water precursor poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) thin films. These spectroscopies include absorption, photoluminescence, photoinduced absorption and their respective optically detected magnetic resonance, and electroabsorption spectroscopy. We have studied singlet and triplet excitons, polarons, and laser action in PPV films. We found that the lowest-lying absorption band is excitonic in origin. It consists of two absorption components due to a bimodal distribution of the polymer chain conjugation lengths. Electroabsorption spectroscopy unambiguously shows the positions of the lowest-lying odd parity exciton 1Bu at 2.59 eV and two of the higher-lying even-parity excitons, namely, mAg at 3.4 eV and kAg at 3.7 eV. From these exciton energies we obtained a lower bound for the exciton binding energy in PPV, Eb(min)5E(mAg)2E(1Bu) 50.8 eV

Photoinduced quantum interference antiresonances in ∏-conjugated polymers

Journal ArticleWe observed photoinduced quantum interference antiresonances between several discrete infraredactive vibrations and the lower-polaron continuous absorption band in a series of p-conjugated polymer films having superior planar orders, where the polaron transition energy is relatively small. The photoinduced Fano-type antiresonances are well explained by extending the amplitude mode model beyond the adiabatic limit. The agreement between the data and the model confirms the presence of a continuous electronic band above the polaron state. We show that high frequency modes are strongly coupled to electrons, with implications for superconductivity

Optical studies of triplet excitations in poly(p-phenylene vinylene)

Journal ArticleWe have studied energy states in the triplet manifold in films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) using a multitude of optical spectroscopies including photoinduced absorption, photoluminescence, their optically detected magnetic resonances, as well as their photogeneration action spectra. We found that singlet fission into two triplets with opposite spins is an efficient route for triplet generation in PPV, similar in strength to the intersystem crossing process. From the threshold energy for singlet fission we deduced that the lowest-lying, odd-parity triplet excitonic state, 13Bµ , is located at 1.55 eV from the ground state, which is about 0.9 eV lower than the lowest-lying, odd-parity singlet state 11Bµ
