This thesis assesses the viability of shellfish aquaculture in the Tagus Estuary of the species Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), by means of a GIS-based site selection and the application of a dynamic modelling software at farm-scale, in order to evaluate the potential production, environmental effects, and economic feasibility. The site selection for shellfish aquaculture is based on the application of a Multi-Criteria Evaluation in a GIS software. Both are useful tools for site selection, as when combined they help decision-makers to identify the existing spatial constraints and take into consideration key variables, such as (i) the external environmental conditions that regulate shellfish growth, (ii) existing infrastructures and socioeconomic variables that are relevant for production, and (iii) contaminated areas that may reduce the shellfish quality as a food product. The dynamic modelling software used, FARM (Farm Aquaculture Resource Management), was applied in accordance with the best areas identified as being suitable for shellfish aquaculture, where the production and profit of two different locations are estimated and compared at a farm-scale level, and further extrapolated to larger areas

Academic spin-offs (ASO) are a complex and multidimensional phenomenon with high risk and whose survival and performance are influenced by different factors. Between research and market entry the ASO have to face a wide range of challenges and risks, and the most important is to ensure the resources for its development. This paper analyzes the influence of human capital of founding teams in the performance of ASO, a multidimensional construct which integrates eight factors related to the qualifications, training, experience and size of the teams. Through a combination of data collected by questionnaire in 42 Portuguese Spin-offs, created between the years 2005 and 2008, eight hypotheses were tested. The results have shown empirical support to the positive correlation between the human capital of the founding team and the performance of ASO in the early years after its creation.N/

The academic spin-offs (ASO) are a relevant tool of knowledge transfer. Even though ASO’s survival/performance rate is recognised to be low, it is higher than the average survival/performance rate of other types of start-ups. However, there are scarce studies about this instrument that needs to be better understood. This paper deals with the influence of technological resources on ASO’s performance, a multidimensional construct represented in this study by registered patents, R&D investment and the relationship with the parent institution. The hypothesis have been tested by the combination of data collected through a questionnaire administered through a personal interview and secondary data obtained from various sources on 42 Portuguese ASO formed between 2005 and 2008. The results allowed to find empirical support for the correlation between technological resources (patents, R&D investment and relationship with the parent institution) and the ASO’s performance

End-to-End Software Construction using ChatGPT: An Experience Report

In this paper, we explore the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the particular context of end-to-end software construction, i.e., in contexts where software developers have a set of requirements and have to design, implement, test, and validate a new software system. Particularly, we report an experiment where we asked three software developers to use ChatGPT to fully implement a Web-based application using mainstream software architectures and technologies. After that, we compare the apps produced by ChatGPT with a reference implementation that we manually implemented for our research. As a result, we document four categories of prompts that can be used by developers in similar contexts, including initialization prompts, feature requests, bug-fixing, and layout prompts. Additionally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of two prompt construction approaches: top-down (where we start with a high-level description of the target software, typically in the form of user stories) and bottom-up (where we request the construction of the system feature by feature)

Abstract The Truck Factor designates the minimal number of developers that have to be hit by a truck (or quit) before a project is incapacitated. It can be seen as a measurement of the concentration of information in individual team members. We calculate the Truc
