Über die Entwicklung von Memsensoren
Since the postulation of the experimental realization of memristive devices in 2008, a broad variety of concepts for the fabrication of memristive devices has been pursued and the underlying switching mechanisms have been studied in detail. The unique electronic properties of memristive devices inspire applications that go beyond conventional electronics, such as using memristive devices as programmable interconnects, to realize logics for in-array-computing or in neuromorphic engineering. A particularly interesting aspect of biological neural networks is the close connection between signal detection and processing at the neuron level, which is an essential contribution to their outstanding efficiency.
This work evolves around the concept of memsensors, which unify the characteristic features of memristive devices and sensor devices and as such appear as promising candidates to realize a close connection between signal detection and processing on the device level. Memsensors are a highly interdisciplinary topic, bridging research in the fields of material science and electrical engineering and relating to insights from biology and medicine through neuromorphic engineering.
The major objective of this thesis is to provide tools and building blocks and showcase pathways to incorporate memristive and sensitive properties into memsensor devices. For this purpose, motivated by an experimental point of view, a nanoparticle-based memristive device with diffusive memristive switching characteristics was developed and characterised in detail and sensors relying on semiconducting metal oxide thin films and nanostructures were thoroughly studied. In addition, in terms of modelling of memsensor circuits, emerging features such as amplitude adaptation are discussed, showcasing the particular eligibility of memsensors in the context of neuromorphic engineering
Enhancing composition control of alloy nanoparticles from gas aggregation source by in operando optical emission spectroscopy
The use of multicomponent targets allows the gas‐phase synthesis of a large variety of alloy nanoparticles (NPs) via gas aggregation sources. However, the redeposition of sputtered material impacts the composition of alloy NPs, as demonstrated here for the case of AgAu alloy NPs. To enable NPs with tailored Au fractions, in operando control over the composition of the NPs is in high demand. We suggest the use of optical emission spectroscopy as a versatile diagnostic tool to determine and control the composition of the NPs. A strong correlation between operating pressure, intensity ratio of Ag and Au emission lines, and the obtained NP compositions is observed. This allows precise in operando control of alloy NP composition obtained from multicomponent targets
In Situ Laser Light Scattering for Temporally and Locally Resolved Studies on Nanoparticle Trapping in a Gas Aggregation Source
Gas phase synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) via magnetron sputtering in a gas aggregation source (GAS) has become a well-established method since its conceptualization three decades ago. NP formation is commonly described in terms of nucleation, growth, and transport alongside the gas stream. However, the NP formation and transport involve complex non-equilibrium processes, which are still the subject of investigation. The development of in situ investigation techniques such as UV–Vis spectroscopy and small angle X-ray scattering enabled further insights into the dynamic processes inside the GAS and have recently revealed NP trapping at different distances from the magnetron source. The main drawback of these techniques is their limited spatial resolution. To understand the spatio-temporal behavior of NP trapping, an in situ laser light scattering technique is applied in this study. By this approach, silver NPs are made visible inside the GAS with good spatial and temporal resolution. It is found that the argon gas pressure, as well as different gas inlet configurations, have a strong impact on the trapping behavior of NPs inside the GAS. The different gas inlet configurations not only affect the trapping of NPs, but also the size distribution and deposition rate of NPs
Enhancing Reliability of Studies on Single Filament Memristive Switching via an Unconventional cAFM Approach
Memristive devices are highly promising for implementing neuromorphic functionalities in future electronic hardware, and direct insights into memristive phenomena on the nanoscale are of fundamental importance to reaching this. Conductive atomic force microscopy (cAFM) has proven to be an essential tool for probing memristive action locally on the nanoscale, but the significance of the acquired data frequently suffers from the nonlocality associated with the thermal drift of the tip in ambient conditions. Furthermore, comparative studies of different configurations of filamentary devices have proven to be difficult, because of an immanent variability of the filament properties between different devices. Herein, these problems are addressed by constraining the memristive action directly at the apex of the probe through functionalization of a cAFM tip with an archetypical memristive stack, which is comprised of Ag/Si3N4. The design of such functionalized cantilevers (entitled here as "memtips") allowed the capture of the long-term intrinsic current response, identifying temporal correlations between switching events, and observing emerging spiking dynamics directly at the nanoscale. Utilization of an identical memtip for measurements on different counter electrodes made it possible to directly compare the impact of different device configurations on the switching behavior of the same filament. Such an analytical approach in ambient conditions will pave the way towards a deeper understanding of filamentary switching phenomena on the nanoscale
Psychotic symptoms in young adults exposed to childhood trauma - A 20 year follow-up study
Childhood adversity has been shown to increase the risk of psychotic symptoms in adult life. However, there are no previous studies looking at the association between experiencing a natural disaster during childhood and the development of psychotic symptoms in young adulthood. Eight hundred and six bushfire-exposed children and 725 control children were evaluated following the 1983 South Australian bushfires. Five hundred and twenty nine (65.6%) of the bushfire group and 464 (64%) controls participated in a follow up study 20 years later. Childhood data on emotional and behavioural disorders and dysfunctional parenting was available. The adult assessment included the Australian National Health and Well-Being psychosis screen and detailed information about trauma, childhood adversity and alcohol and cannabis abuse. 5.6% of subjects responded positively to the psychosis screen and 2.6% responded positively to a further probe question. Psychotic symptoms were more common in subjects exposed to a greater number of traumas, and were associated with higher rates of childhood adversity, emotional and behavioural disturbance, dysfunctional parenting, and alcohol and cannabis abuse. Subjects exposed to bushfires as children did not have a greater risk of psychosis. Our results indicate that exposure to multiple traumas, rather than a single major trauma, increases the risk of later psychosis.Cherrie Galletly, Miranda Van Hooff, Alexander McFarlan
Co‐sputtering of A Thin Film Broadband Absorber Based on Self‐Organized Plasmonic Cu Nanoparticles
The efficient conversion of solar energy to heat is a prime challenge for solar thermal absorbers, and various material classes and device concepts are discussed. One exciting class of solar thermal absorbers are plasmonic broadband absorbers that rely on light absorption thanks to plasmonic resonances sustained in metallic nanoparticles. This work focuses on Cu/AlO plasmonic absorbers, which consist of a thin film stack of a metallic Cu-mirror, a dielectric AlO spacer, and an AlO/Cu-nanoparticle nanocomposite. This work explores two preparation routes for the AlO/Cu-nanoparticle nanocomposite, which rely on the self-organization of Cu nanoparticles from sputtered atoms, either in the gas phase (i.e., via gas aggregation source) or on the thin film surface (i.e., via simultaneous co-sputtering). While in either case, Cu-AlO-AlO/Cu absorbers with a low reflectivity over a broad wavelength regime are obtained, the simultaneous co-sputtering approach enabled better control over the film roughness and showed excellent agreement with dedicated simulations of the optical properties of the plasmonic absorber using a multi-scale modeling approach. Upon variation of the thickness and filling factor of the AlO/Cu nanocomposite layer, the optical properties of the plasmonic absorbers are tailored, reaching an integrated reflectance down to 0.17 (from 250 to 1600 nm)
Developing the Premonitory Urges for Tic Disorders Scale–Revised (PUTS-R)
Background: Patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) or chronic tic disorders frequently experience premonitory urges prior to tics. The ‘Premonitory Urges for Tic Disorders Scale’ (PUTS) is commonly used in order to assess urge severity in patients with tics. Several studies suggest that the PUTS might measure more than one dimension of urges. These include the quality and severity of premonitory urges. Methods: This study aims to replicate and extend previous findings concerning the psychometric properties of the PUTS and its underlying dimensions in a large sample of 241 patients with GTS including both adults (n=93; mean age=34.2±12.84; 73 male) and minors (n=148; mean age=11.8±2.86; 123 male), pooled from three different recruitment sites. Results: Data analysis confirmed good reliability across the PUTS items for both minors and adults and acceptable item characteristics for items 2–8. A factor analysis of items 1–8 confirmed the existence of two factors in both age groups. Conclusions: The results suggest that the PUTS might benefit from several further small modifications, such as rephrasing items 1 and 9 to increase convergence with the overall construct of the scale. Finally, we propose a revised version of the PUTS, consisting of two subscales: one for urge severity and another one for urge quality by including several new items
The CANNA-TICS Study Protocol: A Randomized Multi-Center Double-Blind Placebo Controlled Trial to Demonstrate the Efficacy and Safety of Nabiximols in the Treatment of Adults With Chronic Tic Disorders
Background: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. First-line treatments for tics are antipsychotics and tic-specific behavioral therapies. However, due to a lack of trained therapists and adverse events of antipsychotic medication many patients seek alternative treatment options including cannabis. Based on the favorable results obtained from case studies on different cannabis-based medicines as well as two small randomized controlled trials using delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), we hypothesize that the cannabis extract nabiximols can be regarded as a promising new and safe treatment strategy in TS.
Objective: To test in a double blind randomized clinical trial, whether treatment with the cannabis extract nabiximols is superior to placebo in patients with chronic tic disorders.
Patients and Methods: This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel-group, phase IIIb trial, which aims to enroll 96 adult patients with chronic tic disorders (TS or chronic motor tic disorder) across 6 centers throughout Germany. Patients will be randomized with a 2:1 ratio into a nabiximols and a placebo arm. The primary efficacy endpoint is defined as tic reduction of at least 30% (compared to baseline) according to the Total Tic Score of the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS-TTS) after 13 weeks of treatment. In addition, several secondary endpoints will be assessed including changes in different psychiatric comorbidities, quality of life, driving ability, and safety assessments.
Discussion: This will be the first large, controlled study investigating efficacy and safety of a cannabis-based medicine in patients with TS. Based on available data using different cannabis-based medicines, we expect not only a reduction of tics, but also an improvement of psychiatric comorbidities. If the cannabis extract nabiximols is proven to be safe and effective, it will be a valuable alternative treatment option. The results of this study will be of high health-economic relevance, because a substantial number of patients uses cannabis (illegally) as self-medication.
Conclusion: The CANNA-TICS trial will clarify whether nabiximols is efficacious and safe in the treatment of patients with chronic tic disorders
European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders-version 2.0. Part I:assessment
In 2011 a working group of the European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome (ESSTS) has developed the first European assessment guidelines for Tourette syndrome (TS). Now, we present an updated version 2.0 of these European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders, part I: assessment. Therefore, the available literature has been thoroughly screened, supplemented with national guidelines across countries and discussions among ESSTS experts. Diagnostic changes between DSM-IV and DSM-5 classifications were taken into account and new information has been added regarding differential diagnoses, with an emphasis on functional movement disorders in both children and adults. Further, recommendations regarding rating scales to evaluate tics, comorbidities, and neuropsychological status are provided. Finally, results from a recently performed survey among ESSTS members on assessment in TS are described. We acknowledge that the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) is still the gold standard for assessing tics. Recommendations are provided for scales for the assessment of tics and psychiatric comorbidities in patients with TS not only in routine clinical practice, but also in the context of clinical research. Furthermore, assessments supporting the differential diagnosis process are given as well as tests to analyse cognitive abilities, emotional functions and motor skills
