Episodi della fortuna del Sannazaro lirico: edizioni e studi fra Sette e Ottocento

The paper reconstructs some central moments in the reception of Sannazaro's poetry between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Tracing his editorial fortune and the presence of his lyrical poems in the anthologies of the early eighteenth century, as well as the judgments expressed in the main literary histories of the time, the essay focuses on the establishment of an interpretation of Sannazaro as the first Petrarchist of the sixteenth century. By analysing some Neapolitan critical essays of the nineteenth century (Colangelo, Settembrini, Torraca), it observes in them the tension between a strong sympathy for the historical figure of the author and an even stronger devaluation of his poetry.

From Me to You: Time Together and Subjective Well-Being in the UK.

Time together as a family is a crucial dimension of family life. However, its impact on personal happiness is not well understood. I use the United Kingdom Time Use Survey 2014-2015 to study how time spent with partners and children affects daily subjective well-being. Overall, I find that family time, couple time, and time alone with children contributes significantly to mothers' and fathers' well-being. I show that the activities that families share together mediate an important part of the enjoyment of time together but do not entirely explain this association. This suggests that beyond what families do together, families enjoy being together. I find that fathers enjoy family time more than mothers do. I demonstrate that the unequal division of labour during family time explains this discrepancy. I conclude by discussing the recent transformations of intimate relationships

Bringing It All Back Home. Social Class and Educational Stratification of Childcare in Britain, 1961-2015

Childcare is one of the foundations of human development. An unequal distribution of childcare is an unequal distribution of life chances. This paper investigates the social stratification of parental childcare in the United Kingdom, focusing on class and education, from 1961 to 2015. The study shows that both mothers and fathers have increased their time spent on childcare, with a significant uptick between 1974 and 1983. I find a growing gap in childcare time between mothers with and those without a higher education degree. Regarding social class, the gap in childcare time between professional-class and working-class households has remained relatively constant throughout the period. The paper also explores fathers' involvement in childcare and shows that their childcare time is less stratified compared to mothers. The article discusses the potential mechanisms that could explain the polarisation of childcare in the UK

La polemica epistolare fra Baldassarre Castiglione e Alfonso de Valdés dopo il sacco di Roma

    Get PDF
A long polemical letter about the Sack of Rome, composed in 1528 a few months after the printing of The Courtier and directed against Alfonso de Valdés, was to be Baldassarre Castiglione’s last literary work. While the letter epitomizes and embodies the value system developed in Castiglione’s major work, the harsh tone distinguishes it from his other compositions. The paper looks at the political and diplomatic situation at the heart of the controversy between the two correspondents and considers how their practical goals shaped the formal and stylistic tone of their exchange.

Earnings and Income Penalties for Motherhood: Estimates for British Women Using the Individual Synthetic Control Method

Using data from the British Household Panel Survey and focusing on women who became mothers between 1995 and 2005, we estimate the motherhood penalty for women’s own earnings and for the total income of their household: that is, we consider the extent to which motherhood carries a penalty not only for a mother but also for her family. We adopt an approach that differs from those previously employed in research on motherhood penalties: we follow Hernán and Robins, setting up our data as a ‘target trial’, and we analyse it using the Individual Synthetic Control method, based on the Synthetic Control approach of Abadie, Diamond and Hainmueller. We find considerable variation in the effect of motherhood on British women’s earnings, but the median penalty is a reduction in medium- and long-term earnings by about 45 per cent relative to what women would have earned if they had remained childless. Motherhood has no effect on average on the income of the woman’s household, but has substantial negative effects for some households. Focusing on both individual and household penalties yields a more complete picture of the distributional consequences of motherhood than hitherto
