Jogos, espetáculos e competições na Palestina romana

This article aims to present the games and competitions that were held in Roman Palestine. The following paragraphs will present the different constructions of Herod the Great, also known as king-builder, in the field of spectacles. Herod’s Liberalitas Augusti, his generosity, and the insertion of romanitas in the region, especially through his constructions, will be highlighted. The paths of knowledge about the structures related to the games in Roman Palestine will be dictated by textual and material documentation, whether through its theatres, amphitheaters and hippodromes, or through cultural habits derived from these activitiesEste texto tem por objetivo apresentar os jogos e competições que eram realizados na Palestina romana. Poderão ser observadas nas linhas que seguem as diversas construções de Herodes, o Grande, também conhecido como rei-construtor, no campo dos espetáculos. Destacam-se a Liberalitas Augusti, generosidade, de Herodes, e a inserção da romanitas na região, a partir, principalmente, de suas obras. A documentação textual e a documentação material ditarão os caminhos do conhecimento acerca das estruturas relacionadas aos jogos na Palestina romana, seja por seus teatros, anfiteatros e hipódromos, seja pelos hábitos culturais daí advindo

Arabia Petraea, a Roman province and its monetary issues

Arabia Petraea, or Rome’s Arabian Province as it is also known, was founded by the Romans in 106 AD, but had been a client kingdom of the Roman Empire since the year 63 of the Common Era. It had an important strategic role in guarding the rear of Judea and the Southern flank of Syria. The instability generated by the rivalries and particular interests of the different client states eventually inclined Rome towards the solution of a gradual and definitive provincialization of the region. Despite being the most stable client kingdom, Nabataea was a hiatus in the Eastern geography of the empire. Its annexation thus responded to short and long-term strategic and territorial approaches, fundamentally to a rationalization of the management of the Roman East, which opened a completely new phase in the history of the region. It is our aim in this paper to present the history of the Roman conquest of the Nabataeans, the geographical constitution of this province, and the political and economic issues surrounding the formation of this Roman province at the time of Emperor Trajan. It is our intention to demonstrate the potential for reflection and apprehension of the political, social, economic and religious universe that the coins produced in this region can offer us.A Arabia Petraea, ou província Arábia como também é conhecida, teve sua fundação pelos romanos em 106 d.C., mas já se constituíra como um reino cliente do Império Romano desde o ano 63 da era comum. Teve uma importante função estratégica de guardar a retaguarda da Judeia e o flanco sul da Síria. A instabilidade gerada por rivalidades e interesses particulares dos diferentes estados clientes acabou inclinando Roma para a solução de uma provincialização gradual e definitiva da região. Apesar de ser o reino cliente mais estável, a Nabateia foi um hiato na geografia oriental do império. Sua anexação respondeu, portanto, a abor­dagens estratégicas e territoriais de curto e longo prazo, fundamentalmente a uma racionalização da gestão do Oriente Romano, que abriu uma fase completamente nova na história da região. É nosso objetivo neste artigo apresentar o histórico da conquista romana sobre os nabateus, a constituição geográfica desta província e as questões político-econômicas que envolveram a formação desta província romana à época do Imperador Trajano, assim como demonstrar o potencial de reflexão e apreensão do universo político, social, econômico e religioso que as moedas produzidas nesta região podem nos oferecer

Guarulhos has many natural paths through hills, mountains, and a network of watersheds that allowed the Europeans to move around, enslave humans, and exploit local mineral resources. Besides the natural routes, Guarulhos (São Paulo, Brazil) gold mining archaeological remains (dated back to 1590 according to historical data) also show the great effort made by humans, especially indigenous people, for the construction of reservoirs and canals used for gold mining. Today’s region of Guarulhos is important for understanding the earliest forms of contact during the Portuguese colonization. The region sheds light on the interaction between Portuguese and indigenous groups, as well as the Portuguese strategies for territorial expansion. The purpose of this article is to point out how the mining process has been shaping the behavior of Guarulhos’s different segments of society since the beginning of this economic cycle to the present day.Entre serras, montanhas e uma rede de bacias hidrográficas, Guarulhos possui caminhos naturais que permitiram a movimentação da colonização europeia para a exploração humana e de seus recursos minerais. Ademais das rotas naturais, remanescentes arqueológicos da mineração de Guarulhos, SP, datados de acordo com dados históricos a partir de 1590, indicam um grande empenho por meio de trabalho humano, sobretudo indígena, na construção de reservatórios e canais como objetivo de se explorar o ouro. A região onde se encontra atualmente o município de Guarulhos é um importante ponto para se compreender as primeiras formas de contato durante a colonização portuguesa e sua interação com grupos indígenas e suas estratégias para expansão territorial. O objetivo deste artigo é apontar como o empreendimento de mineração vem implicando no comportamento de diversos segmentos da sociedade guarulhense, desde o início deste ciclo econômico até os dias atuais

Gregos e romanos entre judeus

Este artigo tem uma dupla missão, o que por si só já se trata de um grande desafio, pois tratam-se de dois objetos de reflexão no mesmo texto: 1) discutir a força do judaísmo no Mediterrâneo, ao ponto de levar romanos e outros povos não-judeus a sua conversão ao judaísmo; 2) refletir sobre o embate cultural, político e religioso que se dá a partir da presença de romanos na região oriental, questionando a rigidez identitária de ambos, romanos e judeus. Procuramos demonstrar que a identificação cultural e religiosa que perpassa judeus e romanos, variará muito se considerarmos múltiplas razões
