Internet career fairs in Australian higher education

    Get PDF
[Abstract]: Internet Career Fairs have become a feature of the Australian graduate employment recruitment market. Internet Career Fairs offer considerable benefits in terms of resources and marketing by employers. They also offer an additional form of access to employment information that is used by students to explore their graduate employment opportunities. With the advent of Web.2 technology and sophisticated platforms such as Second Life, there is far greater potential to expand the interactivity and appeal of internet Career Fairs. In context of a description of the broader use of internet technology used for the delivery of career development services in Australia and its universities, this briefly paper describes the first 3-dimensional internet Career Fair established on the Second Life platform by an Australian university Career Service

    Incubation

TH E artificial incubation of eggs is not a recent innovation. For many centuries, some species of birds—our mallee-hen being a typical example—have hatched out their eggs by the heat generated in mounds of decaying vegetation.Furthermore, they have shown considerable skill in maintaining the mounds at uniform temperatures throughout the hatching period. A number of reptiles employ similar methods to hatch their eggs, although in these instances there does not seem to be the same need for carefully-controlled temperature

Chronic respiratory disease of poultry in Western Australia

Widespread chronic respiratory disease was revealed in a survey of respiratory infections in Perth metropolitan area poultry flocks. Most occur in early or midsummer and cause a serious fall in egg production. Return to full lay after the infection is usually slow. While these infections can cause production losses in flocks which are under heavy stress, none of the more serious forms of chronic respiratory disease was found. This gives encouragement for future control of the disease in Western Australia

    Caponising cockerels

Because of its tenderness, succulence and delicate flavour, the flesh of the capon has long been held in high regard by epicures in many lands. Over three centuries have passed since Shakespeare wrote of the portly justice whose fair round belly was with fat capon lined, but throughout the years capons have usually commanded high prices from discriminating consumers of table poultry

Airflow design in refrigerated retail display cabinets and its impact on food quality

© 2019 International Institute of Refrigeration. All rights reserved. This paper investigates how refrigerated display cabinet airflow design can enhance temperature distribution and potentially reduce food waste. Conventional refrigerated retail cabinets have a single column of cold air from the top to the bottom of the merchandising envelope. By contrast separating the retail space into individual cells, each with its own shorter air-curtain reduces infiltration and improves temperature control. The quality and safety of bagged salad over an extended display period was evaluated in a conventional and multiple short air-curtain cabinet. At the end of the test period there was a visible difference in cabinet temperature and relative humidity, which had a direct impact on the salad organoleptic quality and microbiological safety. The temperature band was 11.2ºC and 5.4ºC in the conventional and multiple air curtain cabinets respectively, resulting in a higher degree of salad wilting and shrivelling and an increase on total yeast counts on the conventional cabinet

Galah poisoning : kill the cocky

NO! Not the one that tills the land, but his enemy, the pink and grey galah (Kakatoe rosei-capilla). Farmers have usually found the destruction of galahs damaging standing crops and bagged, or stored grain, fairly difficult. Past methods of boiling grain and adding sweetened substances are rather laborious and require a lot of time. Now, a quick and relatively simple method is available to farmers, using paraffin oil to adhere poison to the grain

    Selecting and preparing table poultry

The two main classes of poultry used for table purposes in Western Australia are roasting fowls, which are usually young cockerels or capons and boiling fowls, which are mainly hens that have passed their most productive laying periods. The distinction is not an arbitrary one, as the so-called boiling fowls—if cooked slowly— can be roasted quite successfully and are preferred by many people. In addition to the two main classes, there is a growing demand for younger, smaller birds for frying and for barbecue meals

    Household poultry-keeping - (continued)

Common ailments of domestic poultry. It is not proposed to deal fully with the diseases of poultry in this article, as complete information on the various diseases is available in pamphlet form free on application to the Department of Agriculture. However, a brief outline of the more common ailments of the domestic fowl is given. Poultry pests Of the external poultry parasites, probably the most devastating are the poultry red mite and the fowl tick. Both these parasites are of the blood-sucking type, hiding by day in cracks and crevices in the shed and emerging at night to gorge themselves with blood from the unfortunate bird. Culling the passengers Whether it be large-scale commercial poultry-farming or in the small backyard flock, it obviously does not pay to keep unproductive birds. The commercial poultry-farmer who is consistently receiving less from sale of eggs and birds than he is paying for poultry-feed, labour and other outlay, can hardly be expected to stay in business indefinitely. In the case of the backyard poultry keeper, while net loss may not be sufficient to cause any serious financial embarrassment, the continued feeding of birds which fail to pay their way is obviously unsatisfactory

Virtual reality, gamification, and mobile multimedia for cystic fibrosis education and management

    Get PDF
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a rare condition and is the most common life-limiting genetic disease affecting Caucasians; and Ireland has the highest occurrence of this condition in the world. As CF is a rare disease, common conditions and diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease are given precedence by researchers and practitioners who design and implement multimedia solutions. As life expectancy for CF patients is expected to rise, it is postulated that the development of multimedia interventions may aid CF adults in the management of their disease. This research, therefore, aims to investigate if and how the use of multimedia can be of benefit to Cystic Fibrosis knowledge and education. To achieve this, a systematic scoping literature review was conducted which yielded 12 manuscripts. From these papers it was observed that there is paucity in available multimedia for medical professionals, games for CF adults, and management applications for CF adults. These three observations serve as the objectives of each Chapter within the thesis. Each Chapter begins by investigating the observation further before designing and implementing a multimedia solution. The results of this research produced a 3D interactive virtual reality tool for medical professionals, a general mHealth design and development pipeline/framework, a serious game with data analysis system for CF adults, three e-learning tools for CF adults, and a CF patient passport app. All multimedia solutions were evaluated with their target audience, and each result is presented. This research concludes that multimedia can be of benefit to the education and management of Cystic Fibrosis. Feedback from testing with both medical professionals and CF adults demonstrates that these cohorts indeed want these multimedia solutions and find them beneficial. However, further investigation and research is required to evaluate the benefits these solutions have. Therefore this thesis also identifies further areas of interest and makes recommendations for future research
