Cardy and Kerr
The Kerr/CFT correspondence employs the Cardy formula to compute the entropy
of the left moving CFT states. This computation, which correctly reproduces the
Bekenstein--Hawking entropy of the four-dimensional extremal Kerr black hole,
is performed in a regime where the temperature is of order unity rather than in
a high-temperature regime. We show that the comparison of the entropy of the
extreme Kerr black hole and the entropy in the CFT can be understood within the
Cardy regime by considering a D0-D6 system with the same entropic properties.Comment: 20 pages; LaTeX; JHEP format; v.2 references added, v.3 Section 4

On the viability of regular black holes
The evaporation of black holes raises a number of conceptual issues, most of them related to the final stages of evaporation, where the interplay between the central singularity and Hawking radiation cannot be ignored. Regular models of black holes replace the central singularity with a nonsingular spacetime region, in which an effective classical geometric description is available. It has been argued that these models provide an effective, but complete, description of the evaporation of black holes at all times up to their eventual disappearance. However, here we point out that known models fail to be self-consistent: the regular core is exponentially unstable against perturbations with a finite timescale, while the evaporation time is infinite, therefore making the instability impossible to prevent. We also discuss how to overcome these difficulties, highlighting that this can be done only at the price of accepting that these models cannot be fully predictive regarding the final stages of evaporation
Schwarzschild spacetime under generalised Gullstrand-Painlev\'e slicing
We investigate a foliation of Schwarzschild spacetime determined by observers
freely falling in the radial direction. This is described using a
generalisation of Gullstrand-Painlev\'e coordinates which allows for any
possible radial velocity. This foliation provides a contrast with the usual
static foliation implied by Schwarzschild coordinates. The -dimensional
spaces are distinct for the static and falling observers, so the embedding
diagrams, spatial measurement, simultaneity, and time at infinity are also
distinct, though the -dimensional spacetime is unchanged. Our motivation is
conceptual understanding, to counter Newton-like viewpoints. In future work,
this alternate foliation may shed light on open questions regarding quantum
fields, analogue gravity, entropy, energy, and other quantities. This article
is aimed at experienced relativists, whereas a forthcoming series is intended
for a general audience of physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, to appear as chapter 9 in Cacciatori, G\"uneysu,

Hawking Radiation from Higher-Dimensional Black Holes
We review the quantum field theory description of Hawking radiation from evaporating black holes and summarize what is known about Hawking radiation from black holes in more than four space-time dimensions. In the context of the Large Extra Dimensions scenario, we present the theoretical formalism for all types of emitted fields and a selection of results on the radiation spectra. A detailed analysis of the Hawking fluxes in this case is essential for modelling the evaporation of higher-dimensional black holes at the LHC, whose creation is predicted by low-energy models of quantum gravity. We discuss the status of the quest for black-hole solutions in the context of the Randall-Sundrum brane-world model and, in the absence of an exact metric, we review what is known about Hawking radiation from such black holes
Apoptosis-like cell death in Leishmania donovani treated with KalsomeTM10, a new liposomal amphotericin B
The present study aimed to elucidate the cell death mechanism in Leishmania donovani upon treatment with KalsomeTM10, a new liposomal amphotericin B.
Methodology/Principal findings We studied morphological alterations in promastigotes through phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy. Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and disruption of mitochondrial integrity was determined by flow cytometry using annexinV-FITC, JC-1 and mitotraker, respectively. For analysing oxidative stress,
generation of H2O2 (bioluminescence kit) and mitochondrial superoxide O2 − (mitosox) were
measured. DNA fragmentation was evaluated using terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP nick-end labelling (TUNEL) and DNA laddering assay. We found that
KalsomeTM10 is more effective then Ambisome against the promastigote as well as intracellular amastigote forms. The mechanistic study showed that KalsomeTM10 induced several morphological alterations in promastigotes typical of apoptosis. KalsomeTM10 treatment showed a dose- and time-dependent exposure of PS in promastigotes. Further, study on mitochondrial pathway revealed loss of mitochondrial membrane potential as well as disruption in mitochondrial integrity with depletion of intracellular pool of ATP. KalsomeTM10 treated promastigotes showed increased ROS production, diminished GSH levels and increased caspase-like activity. DNA fragmentation and cell cycle arrest was observed in KalsomeTM10 treated promastigotes. Apoptotic DNA fragmentation was also
observed in KalsomeTM10 treated intracellular amastigotes. KalsomeTM10 induced generation of ROS and nitric oxide leads to the killing of the intracellular parasites. Moreover, endocytosis is indispensable for KalsomeTM10 mediated anti-leishmanial effect in host

Allergic diseases in the elderly
Demographic distribution of the population is progressively changing with the proportion of elderly persons increasing in most societies. This entails that there is a need to evaluate the impact of common diseases, such as asthma and other allergic conditions, in this age segment. Frailty, comorbidities and polymedication are some of the factors that condition management in geriatric patients. The objective of this review is to highlight the characteristics of allergic diseases in older age groups, from the influence of immunosenescence, to particular clinical implications and management issues, such as drug interactions or age-related side effects
Dynamics of Disks and Warps
This chapter reviews theoretical work on the stellar dynamics of galaxy
disks. All the known collective global instabilities are identified, and their
mechanisms described in terms of local wave mechanics. A detailed discussion of
warps and other bending waves is also given. The structure of bars in galaxies,
and their effect on galaxy evolution, is now reasonably well understood, but
there is still no convincing explanation for their origin and frequency. Spiral
patterns have long presented a special challenge, and ideas and recent
developments are reviewed. Other topics include scattering of disk stars and
the survival of thin disks.Comment: Chapter accepted to appear in Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems, vol
