    Charge Order Driven spin-Peierls Transition in NaV2O5

    We conclude from 23Na and 51V NMR measurements in NaxV2O5(x=0.996) a charge ordering transition starting at T=37 K and preceding the lattice distortion and the formation of a spin gap Delta=106 K at Tc=34.7 K. Above Tc, only a single Na site is observed in agreement with the Pmmn space group of this first 1/4-filled ladder system. Below Tc=34.7 K, this line evolves into eight distinct 23Na quadrupolar split lines, which evidences a lattice distortion with, at least, a doubling of the unit cell in the (a,b) plane. A model for this unique transition implying both charge density wave and spin-Peierls order is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Prenatal and Postnatal Tobacco Exposure and Behavioral Problems in 10-Year-Old Children: Results from the GINI-plus Prospective Birth Cohort Study

    BACKGROUND: Prenatal and postnatal tobacco exposure have been reported to be associated with behavioral problems. However, the magnitude of the association with tobacco exposure at specific periods of exposure is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the relative risk of behavioral problems in children who had been exposed to tobacco smoke in utero and postnatally. METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective birth cohort study in two cities in Germany: the German Infant Nutrition Intervention. Our sample included 5,991 children born between 1995 and 1998 as well as their parents. We measured behavioral problems using the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) at follow-up 10 years after birth. According to prespecified SDQ cutoff values, children were classified as "normal," "borderline," or "abnormal" according to the subscales "emotional symptoms," "conduct problems," "hyperactivity/inattention," "peer-relationship problems," and a total difficulties score. Smoke exposure and further covariates were assessed using parent questionnaires. RESULTS: Compared with children not exposed to tobacco smoke, children exposed both pre- and postnatally to tobacco smoke had twice the estimated risk [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.4-3.1] of being classified as abnormal according to the total difficulties score of the SDQ at 10 years of age. Children who were only prenatally exposed had a 90% higher relative risk (95% CI, 0.9-4.0), whereas children who were only postnatally exposed had a 30% higher relative risk (95% CI, 0.9-1.9). These results could not be explained by confounding by parental education, father's employment, child's time spent in front of computer or television screen, being a single father or mother, or mother's age. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke is associated with behavioral problems in school-age children.     Mn12_{12}-Acetate Complexes Studied as Single Molecules

    The phenomenon of single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of mixed valent Mn12 coordination clusters of general formula [MnIII^{III}8_{8}MnIV^{IV}4_{4}O12_{12}(RCOO)16_{16}(H2_{2}O)4_{4}] had been exemplified by bulk samples of the archetypal [MnIII^{III}8_{8}MnIV^{IV}4_{4}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)16_{16}(H2_{2}O)4_{4}] (4) molecule, and the molecular origin of the observed magnetic behavior has found support from extensive studies on the Mn12 system within crystalline material or on molecules attached to a variety of surfaces. Here we report the magnetic signature of the isolated cationic species [Mn12_{12}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)15_{15}(CH3_{3}CN)]+^{+} (1) by gas phase X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy, and we find it closely resembling that of the corresponding bulk samples. Furthermore, we report broken symmetry DFT calculations of spin densities and single ion tensors of the isolated, optimized complexes [Mn12_{12}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)15_{15}(CH3_{3}CN)]+^{+} (1), [[Mn12_{12}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)16_{16}] (2), [Mn12_{12}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)16_{16}(H2_{2}O)4_{4}] (3), and the complex in bulk geometry [MnIII^{III}8_{8}MnIV^{IV}4_{4}O12_{12}(CH3_{3}COO)16_{16}(H2_{2}O)4_{4}] (5). The found magnetic fingerprints – experiment and theory alike – are of a remarkable robustness: The MnIV^{IV}4_{4} core bears almost no magnetic anisotropy while the surrounding MnIII8 ring is highly anisotropic. These signatures are truly intrinsic properties of the Mn12_{12} core scaffold within all of these complexes and largely void of the environment. This likely holds irrespective of bulk packing effects

    Experimental and theoretical near edge x ray absorption fine structure studies of NO

    Experimental near edge x ray absorption fine structure NEXAFS spectra of the nitrosonium NO ion are presented and theoretically analyzed. While neutral NO has an open shell, the cation is a closed shell species, which for NEXAFS leads to the simplicity of a closed shell spectrum. Compared to neutral NO, the electrons in the cation experience a stronger Coulomb potential, which introduces a shift of the ionization potential towards higher energies, a depletion of intensity in a large interval above the amp; 960; amp; 8727; resonance, and a shift of the amp; 963; amp; 8727; resonance from the continuum to below the ionization threshold.     Global Description of EUSO-Balloon Instrument

    For the JEM-EUSO CollaborationThe EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder of the JEM-EUSO mission, designed to be installed on-board the International Space Station before the end of this decade. The EUSO-Balloon instrument, conceived as a scaleddown version of the main mission, is currently developed as a payload of a stratospheric balloon operated by CNES, and will, most likely, be launched during the CNES flight campaign in 2014. Several key elements of JEM-EUSO have been implemented in the EUSO-Balloon. The instrument consists of an UV telescope, made of three Fresnel lenses, designed to focus the signal of the UV tracks, generated by highly energetic cosmic rays propagating in the earth's atmosphere, onto a finely pixelized UV camera. In this contribution, we review the main stages of the signal processing of the EUSO-Balloon instrument: the photodetection, the analog electronics, the trigger stages, which select events while rejecting random background, the acquisition system performing data storage and the monitoring, which allows the instrument control during operation

    Interplay Between Childhood Physical Abuse and Familial Risk in the Onset of Psychotic Disorders

    Background: Childhood abuse is considered one of the main environmental risk factors for the development of psychotic symptoms and disorders. However, this association could be due to genetic factors influencing exposure to such risky environments or increasing sensitivity to the detrimental impact of abuse. Therefore, using a large epidemiological case-control sample, we explored the interplay between a specific form of childhood abuse and family psychiatric history (a proxy for genetic risk) in the onset of psychosis. Methods: Data were available on 172 first presentation psychosis cases and 246 geographically matched controls from the Aetiology and Ethnicity of Schizophrenia and Other Psychoses study. Information on childhood abuse was obtained retrospectively using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire and occurrence of psychotic and affective disorders in first degree relatives with the Family Interview for Genetic Studies. Results: Parental psychosis was more common among psychosis cases than unaffected controls (adjusted OR = 5.96, 95% CI: 2.09–17.01, P = .001). Parental psychosis was also associated with physical abuse from mothers in both cases (OR = 3.64, 95% CI: 1.06–12.51, P = .040) and controls (OR = 10.93, 95% CI: 1.03–115.90, P = .047), indicative of a gene-environment correlation. Nevertheless, adjusting for parental psychosis did not measurably impact on the abuse-psychosis association (adjusted OR = 3.31, 95% CI: 1.22–8.95, P= .018). No interactions were found between familial liability and maternal physical abuse in determining psychosis caseness. Conclusions: This study found no evidence that familial risk accounts for associations between childhood physical abuse and psychotic disorder nor that it substantially increases the odds of psychosis among individuals reporting abuse

    Miocene waterfowl and other birds from central Otago, New Zealand

    Copyright © The Natural History Museum 2007Abundant fossil bird bones from the lower Bannockburn Formation, Manuherikia Group, an Early-Middle Miocene lacustrine deposit, 16–19 Ma, from Otago in New Zealand, reveal the “St Bathans Fauna” (new name), a first Tertiary avifauna of land and freshwater birds from New Zealand. At least 23 species of birds are represented by bones, and probable moa, Aves: Dinornithiformes, by eggshell. Anatids dominate the fauna with four genera and five species described as new: a sixth and largest anatid species is represented by just one bone. This is the most diverse Early-Middle Miocene duck fauna known worldwide. Among ducks, two species of dendrochenines are most numerous in the fauna, but a tadornine is common as well. A diving petrel (Pelecanoididae: Pelecanoides) is described, so extending the geological range of this genus worldwide from the Pliocene to the Middle Miocene, at least. The remaining 16 taxa are left undescribed but include: a large species of gull (Laridae); two small waders (Charadriiformes, genus indet.), the size of Charadrius bicinctus and Calidris ruficollis, respectively; a gruiform represented by one specimen similar to Aptornis; abundant rail (Rallidae) bones, including a common flightless rail and a rarer slightly larger taxon, about the size of Gallirallus philippensis; an ?eagle (Accipitridae); a pigeon (Columbidae); three parrots (Psittacidae); an owlet nightjar (Aegothelidae: Aegotheles sp.); a swiftlet (Apodidae: Collocalia sp.); and three passerine taxa, of which the largest is a member of the Cracticidae. The absence of some waterbirds, such as anserines (including swans), grebes (Podicipedidae) and shags (Phalacrocoracidae), among the abundant bones, indicates their probable absence from New Zealand in the Early-Middle Miocene.T.
