    Optimal overlayer inspired by Photuris firefly improves light-extraction efficiency of existing light-emitting diodes

    In this paper the design, fabrication and characterization of a bioinspired overlayer deposited on a GaN LED is described. The purpose of this overlayer is to improve light extraction into air from the diode's high refractive-index active material. The layer design is inspired by the microstructure found in the firefly Photuris sp. The actual dimensions and material composition have been optimized to take into account the high refractive index of the GaN diode stack. This two-dimensional pattern contrasts other designs by its unusual profile, its larger dimensions and the fact that it can be tailored to an existing diode design rather than requiring a complete redesign of the diode geometry.     Cytoskeleton abnormalities in axonopathies of unknown aetiology: correlations with morphometry

    To determine if specific axonal cytoskeleton abnormalities could be demonstrated in axonopathies without aetiology, nerve biopsies from five controls and nine cases were analyzed by morphometry and immunocytochemistry with anti-neurofilament (NF, subunits L, M, H) and anti-beta tubulin (TUB) antibodies. Morphometry revealed either large fiber atrophy (decrease in large fiber density with increased density in small fibers), degeneration of large fibers (decrease in large fiber density and in total density of fibers) or of all diameter fibers. NF immunostaining density decreased (by 21-89%) only in cases with fiber loss, in parallel to myelinated fiber density as determined by morphometry. On the contrary, the density of fibers labelled for TUB increased significantly in all except two cases by 52-102% over controls. Nevertheless, in these two cases--with a severe loss of fibers--as well as in other cases, the ratio of the density of fibers labelled for TUB and NFL (TUB/NFL) increased by 48-404%. Thus, the total density of myelinated fibers was always inversely correlated with the TUB/NFL ratio. Similar abnormalities have been described only after axotomy; our cases could thus be compared to

    The biological condition of French rivers has not improved over the last seventeen years according to the national Fish-Based-Index (FBI)

    We evaluate, for the first time, variations of the national Fish-Based-Index (FBI) over a seventeen-year period for 1583 sampled sites evenly distributed across the French territory. As far as we know this is one of the first studies analyzing the temporal trends of a fish-based biotic indicator for such a consistent set of records going back over almost two decades. Our results provide four important insights. First, the index is efficient in discriminating sites in good condition from sites experiencing anthropogenic disturbances. Second, according to the index, the ecological state of French riverine fish assemblages is rather poor, as around half of the assessed sites, thought to reflect the diverse conditions within the French riverine system, are significantly impaired. Third, according to the index, there is no noticeable amelioration through time of sites fish assemblage structure and function despite management efforts initiated two decades ago to comply with the EU’s 2000 Water Framework Directive. Fourth, the index might start being influenced by climate change as early signs of response to warming are happening since the last 10 yr. According to the FBI, the current efforts for improving the biological condition of riverine systems in France are not yet creating desired outcomes

    Temperature, water, solar radiation, and atmospheric CO2 concentration are the main abiotic factors that are changing in the course of global warming. These abiotic factors govern the synthesis and degradation of primary (sugars, amino acids, organic acids, etc.) and secondary (phenolic and volatile flavor compounds and their precursors) metabolites directly, via the regulation of their biosynthetic pathways, or indirectly, via their effects on vine physiology and phenology. Several hundred secondary metabolites have been identified in the grape berry. Their biosynthesis and degradation have been characterized and have been shown to occur during different developmental stages of the berry. The understanding of how the different abiotic factors modulate secondary metabolism and thus berry quality is of crucial importance for breeders and growers to develop plant material and viticultural practices to maintain high-quality fruit and wine production in the context of global warming. Here, we review the main secondary metabolites of the grape berry, their biosynthesis, and how their accumulation and degradation is influenced by abiotic factors. The first part of the review provides an update on structure, biosynthesis, and degradation of phenolic compounds (flavonoids and non-flavonoids) and major aroma compounds (terpenes, thiols, methoxypyrazines, and C13 norisoprenoids). The second part gives an update on the influence of abiotic factors, such as water availability, temperature, radiation, and CO2 concentration, on berry secondary metabolism. At the end of the paper, we raise some critical questions regarding intracluster berry heterogeneity and dilution effects and how the sampling strategy can impact the outcome of studies on the grapevine berry response to abiotic factors

    Outcomes in newly diagnosed elderly glioblastoma patients after concomitant temozolomide administration and hypofractionated radiotherapy

    This study aimed to analyze the treatment and outcomes of older glioblastoma patients. Forty-four patients older than 70 years of age were referred to the Paul Strauss Center for chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The median age was 75.5 years old (range: 70-84), and the patients included 18 females and 26 males. The median Karnofsky index (KI) was 70%. The Charlson indices varied from 4 to 6. All of the patients underwent surgery. O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) methylation status was determined in 25 patients. All of the patients received radiation therapy. Thirty-eight patients adhered to a hypofractionated radiation therapy schedule and six patients to a normofractionated schedule. Neoadjuvant, concomitant and adjuvant chemotherapy regimens were administered to 12, 35 and 20 patients, respectively. At the time of this analysis, 41 patients had died. The median time to relapse was 6.7 months. Twenty-nine patients relapsed, and 10 patients received chemotherapy upon relapse. The median overall survival (OS) was 7.2 months and the one- and two-year OS rates were 32% and 12%, respectively. In a multivariate analysis, only the Karnofsky index was a prognostic factor. Hypofractionated radiotherapy and chemotherapy with temozolomide are feasible and acceptably tolerated in older patients. However, relevant prognostic factors are needed to optimize treatment proposals

    International Geomagnetic Reference Field: the 12th generation

    The 12th generation of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) was adopted in December 2014 by the Working Group V-MOD appointed by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). It updates the previous IGRF generation with a definitive main field model for epoch 2010.0, a main field model for epoch 2015.0, and a linear annual predictive secular variation model for 2015.0-2020.0. Here, we present the equations defining the IGRF model, provide the spherical harmonic coefficients, and provide maps of the magnetic declination, inclination, and total intensity for epoch 2015.0 and their predicted rates of change for 2015.0-2020.0. We also update the magnetic pole positions and discuss briefly the latest changes and possible future trends of the Earth’s magnetic fiel

    Variants in CUL4B are Associated with Cerebral Malformations

    Variants in cullin 4B (CUL4B) are a known cause of syndromic X-linked intellectual disability. Here, we describe an additional 25 patients from 11 families with variants in CUL4B. We identified nine different novel variants in these families and confirmed the pathogenicity of all nontruncating variants. Neuroimaging data, available for 15 patients, showed the presence of cerebral malformations in ten patients. The cerebral anomalies comprised malformations of cortical development (MCD), ventriculomegaly, and diminished white matter volume. The phenotypic heterogeneity of the cerebral malformations might result from the involvement of CUL-4B in various cellular pathways essential for normal brain development. Accordingly, we show that CUL-4B interacts with WDR62, a protein in which variants were previously identified in patients with microcephaly and a wide range of MCD. This interaction might contribute to the development of cerebral malformations in patients with variants in CUL4B
