Chemical and sensory analysis of commercial Navel oranges in California.
Seven lots of commercially available Navel oranges grown in California were evaluated with flavoromic, metabolomic, sensory descriptive analysis, and consumer testing techniques to identify sensory and chemical drivers of liking. Eight identified chemical clusters related to numerous sensory attributes and consumer preferences. Differences in adult and child preferences led to the discovery of six consumer clusters (four adult and two child). Sweetness, overall flavor, sourness, fruity flavor, and juiciness were identified as the main sensory drivers of liking for the consumers. Fructose, glucose, and proline were among the compounds that best explained perceived sweetness while sourness was correlated with citrate and ascorbate. Perceived fruity flavor increased with higher concentrations of ethanol. We conclude that consumers differ in their preferences for Navel oranges and desire fruit that is higher in both sweetness and sourness

The Impact of Social Media Marketing on Brand Awareness and Purchase Intention: Case Study of Vietnam's domestic fashion brands
The study aimed to examine the impact of social media marketing on brand awareness and purchase intention for Vietnamese domestic fashion brands. Quantitative research was conducted on 302 Vietnamese people of Generation Z. The questionnaire designed on Google forms was sent to research samples who were willing to participate. Research results determined the role and benefits of social media marketing in 2 aspects: (1) information about the brand of social media marketing on social networks and (2) brand engagement on social networks. Social media marketing has a positive impact on brand awareness and purchase intention of Vietnamese domestic fashion brands. In particular, brand information when communicating on social networks has a direct and positive impact on brand awareness and purchase intention. Brand engagement on social networks has a positive direct impact on brand awareness and a positive indirect impact on purchase intention through brand awareness. The research results show that Vietnamese domestic fashion brands do quite well in social media marketing, and are highly appreciated by the online community of generation Z in Vietnam. In the future, in order to improve brand awareness and purchase intention, Vietnamese domestic fashion brands need to pay attention to the brand information properties of social media marketing programs and need to invest more in brand engagement characteristics of social networks.

Joint Alignment of Multivariate Quasi-Periodic Functional Data Using Deep Learning
The joint alignment of multivariate functional data plays an important role
in various fields such as signal processing, neuroscience and medicine,
including the statistical analysis of data from wearable devices. Traditional
methods often ignore the phase variability and instead focus on the variability
in the observed amplitude. We present a novel method for joint alignment of
multivariate quasi-periodic functions using deep neural networks, decomposing,
but retaining all the information in the data by preserving both phase and
amplitude variability. Our proposed neural network uses a special activation of
the output that builds on the unit simplex transformation, and we utilize a
loss function based on the Fisher-Rao metric to train our model. Furthermore,
our method is unsupervised and can provide an optimal common template function
as well as subject-specific templates. We demonstrate our method on two
simulated datasets and one real example, comprising data from 12-lead 10s
electrocardiogram recordings.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure
Chronic GLP1 Therapy Reduces Postprandial IL6 in Obese Humans With Prediabetes
Single-dose glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) therapy increases postprandial plasma IL6 levels in prediabetic, obese humans. GLP1-IL6 interactions underly multiple antidiabetic effects, but these may differ after acute versus chronic therapy. This study examines postprandial effects of GLP1 after chronic therapy. Seven humans (six Black) with prediabetes and obesity completed 6 weeks of exenatide extended release therapy. Then subjects returned for pre- and post-meal measurements of plasma IL6, GLP1, glucagon, and related inflammatory markers. Weight, which was measured before and after therapy, did not change. Plasma IL6 decreased from baseline to postmeal state ( = 0.016), with decreases in free fatty acids
Isogeometric Analysis for BIM-Based Design and Simulation of Sub-Rectangular Tunnel
The design and analysis of segmental tunnel lining is today often based on empirical solutions with simplified assumptions. This work showcases the application of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) for computationally efficient simulations of tunnel linings [1, 2]. In our past research, we developed a design-through-analysis procedure that consists of i) parametric modeling of the segmented tunnel lining; ii) development of an IGA computational framework, iii) reconstruction of the BIM lining model for IGA analysis, and iv) simulation model for lining including a reconstructed IGA model, contact interfaces between the joints, and a non-linear soil-structure interaction model based on the Variational Hyperstatic Reaction Method (VHRM) [3].In this paper, we extend our method for the analysis of subrectangular tunnel linings and demonstrate its efficiency using the example of the Shanghai express tunnel. The advantage of our novel method is the flexibility in adapting the tunnel alignment with the help of NURBS/CAD technology. Employing the high-order geometry definition, convergence of the mesh refinement procedure can be obtained with much faster rate. As a result, the modelling effort and computational time are reduced significantly. Moreover, this approach allows to capture the bending moment with better regularity. The combination with an existing BIM modelling approach via geometryreconstruction leads to a very efficient framework for tunnel lining analysis and design

The role of bacterial and algal exopolymeric substances in iron chemistry
© 2015 Elsevier B.V. It is widely accepted that the complexation of iron (Fe) with organic compounds is the primary factor that regulates Fe reactivity and its bioavailability to phytoplankton in the open ocean. Despite considerable efforts to unravel the provenance of the many organic ligands present in the 'ligand soup' and their contribution to Fe chemistry, much of this pool remains largely unresolved. Bacteria and phytoplankton are known to release exopolymeric substances (EPS) for a variety of functions and it is known that this material has metal binding properties. However, the contribution that bacterial and algal EPS makes to Fe biogeochemistry is not well documented. This study revealed that both bacterial and algal EPS contain functional components known to bind Fe (uronic acid, saccharides) and details the molecular weight distribution of the EPS. It is also demonstrated that components of the EPS have a high affinity for Fe-binding, in some cases similar to that of bacterial siderophores (~KFe'L 1012) and that this material greatly enhances Fe solubility (and, possibly, Fe oxyhydroxide reactivity via prevention of aggregation) in seawater. However, EPS may also accelerate Fe(II) oxidation and thus Fe(II) removal from the system. Our findings indicate that, in remote ocean regions, bacterial and algal EPS could play a significant role in the biogeochemical cycling of Fe and their contribution should be considered to further our understanding of the dynamics of Fe-limited oceans
