    Bayesian estimation of inefficiency heterogeneity in stochastic frontier models

    Estimation of the one sided error component in stochastic frontier models may erroneously attribute firm characteristics to inefficiency if heterogeneity is unaccounted for. However, unobserved inefficiency heterogeneity has been little explored. In this work, we propose to capture it through a random parameter which may affect the location, scale, or both parameters of a truncated normal inefficiency distribution using a Bayesian approach. Our findings using two real data sets, suggest that the inclusion of a random parameter in the inefficiency distribution is able to capture latent heterogeneity and can be used to validate the suitability of observed covariates to distinguish heterogeneity from inefficiency. Relevant effects are also found on separating and shrinking individual posterior efficiency distributions when heterogeneity affects the location and scale parameters of the one-sided error distribution, and consequently affecting the estimated mean efficiency scores and rankings. In particular, including heterogeneity simultaneously in both parameters of the inefficiency distribution in models that satisfy the scaling property leads to a decrease in the uncertainty around the mean scores and less overlapping of the posterior efficiency distributions, which provides both more reliable efficiency scores and rankings

    Efficiency evaluation of hotel chains: a Spanish case study

    The tourism industry, in particular the hotel sector, is a highly competitive market. In this context, it is important that an hotel chain operates efficiently if it wants to improve or maintain its market position. The objective of this work is to compare the relative efficiency of hotel chains operating in Spain. To do this, we have designed a stochastic frontier model to measure revenue efficiency as a function of various different inputs such as total staff or number of rooms. Given that chains vary considerably in size, both inputs and outputs are normalized by an appropriate size measure. In contrast to most previous work, we account for heterogeneity in hotel chains by introducing relevant variables, such as the proportion of hotels in the chain with three stars or fewer, into the efficiency term of the stochastic frontier model. Our results suggest that in the Spanish case, in the period of the economic crisis, hotel chains increase overall revenue by investing in fewer, big hotels rather than more, small hotels. Furthermore, in terms of revenue efficiency, it appears better for hotel chains to invest in hotels of three or fewer stars than in higher star rated hotels.     Vanishing Viscous Limits for 3D Navier-Stokes Equations with A Navier-Slip Boundary Condition

    In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a Navier slip boundary condition on general compact and smooth domains in R3\mathbf{R}^3. We first obtain the higher order regularity estimates for the solutions to Prandtl's equation boundary layers. Furthermore, we prove that the strong solution to Navier-Stokes equations converges to the Eulerian one in C([0,T];H1(Ω))C([0,T];H^1(\Omega)) and L^\infty((0,T)\times\o), where TT is independent of the viscosity, provided that initial velocity is regular enough.     BACKGROUND: Assisted hatching (AH) techniques, designed for facilitating the embryo escape out of the zona pellucida (ZP) have been used in IVF centres since 1992. The initial indications for AH were patient's age, ZP thickness, high basal FSH and repeated IVF failures. Several retrospective and prospective studies assessing AH in these indications have given disparate results. Our aims were to evaluate the benefits of AH and immunosuppressive/antibiotic treatment (IA) in patients with either a poor prognosis of success, previous implantation failures or transfers of cryopreserved embryos. METHODS: Four IVF centres allocated 426 patients, randomized for AH and IA, into four groups of AH indications between 1997 and 1999. AH was performed with a diode laser. ZP thickness, opening size and embryo score were recorded. Outcome measures were implantation and delivery rates. RESULTS: Patients coming for a first or third transfer of cryopreserved embryos and poor prognosis patients admitted for a first trial did not benefit from AH. Even patients with repeated implantation failures of fresh embryos did not gain significantly from AH. CONCLUSIONS: Among AH indications, absence of implantation after several transfers of good quality embryos remains the strongest patient selection criterion. By similar method we also show nonexistence of self-similar blowing up solutions to the divergence-free transport equation in Rn\Bbb R^n.     Viscous-Inviscid Interactions in a Boundary-Layer Flow Induced by a Vortex Array

    In this paper we investigate the asymptotic validity of boundary layer theory. For a flow induced by a periodic row of point-vortices, we compare Prandtl's solution to Navier-Stokes solutions at different ReRe numbers. We show how Prandtl's solution develops a finite time separation singularity. On the other hand Navier-Stokes solution is characterized by the presence of two kinds of viscous-inviscid interactions between the boundary layer and the outer flow. These interactions can be detected by the analysis of the enstrophy and of the pressure gradient on the wall. Moreover we apply the complex singularity tracking method to Prandtl and Navier-Stokes solutions and analyze the previous interactions from a different perspective
