An efficient protocol to perform genetic traceability of tissue and foods from Geoffroea decorticans
The quality of a DNA isolation method depends, among others, on the target tissue and the metabolites therein. Geoffroea decorticans Burkart (chanar) is a species that has nutritional and pharmacological potential. However, an effective method of DNA extraction capable of facilitating population studies and food genetic traceability has not been studied yet. The objective of the present work was to evaluate four methods of DNA extraction from leaves and chanar-based foods. The methods were evaluated based on yield, DNA purity, and molecular markers. The CCI-P (CTAB/Chloroform-Isoamylalcohol/pellet) method showed the highest yield of DNA obtained from leaves. However, the CPCI-SC (CTAB/Phenol-Chloroform-Isoamylalcohol/silica-column) method was the only one that resulted in acceptable DNA quality with both parameters (A260/A280 and A260/A230). The leaf DNA obtained with this method showed a greater amount of fragments with RAPD, and an acceptable amount of fragments with ISSR. On the other hand, the CCI-P method showed a higher yield of DNA from arrope de chanar (syrup). However, the CPCI-SC method was the only one that had relatively better DNA quality, which allowed the amplification of molecular markers. Regarding chanar flour, the CPCI-SC method showed the highest yield, DNA quality and good amplification with molecular markers. Therefore, the CPCI-SC extraction method is efficient for obtaining DNA from different matrices, and can support studies for a possible designation of origin of chanar-based foods
Spatial dispersion in Casimir forces: A brief review
We present the basic principles of non-local optics in connection with the
calculation of the Casimir force between half-spaces and thin films.
At currently accessible distances , non-local corrections amount to about
half a percent, but they increase roughly as 1/L at smaller separations. Self
consistent models lead to corrections with the opposite sign as models with

ALMA observations of the Red Rectangle, a preliminary analysis
We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB
objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary
nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously.
We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and
12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary
object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date.
These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex
structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find
a low-velocity outflow that occupies more or less the region placed between the
disk and the optical X-shaped nebula. From our observations and preliminary
modeling of the data, we confirm the previously known properties of the disk
and obtain a first description of the structure, dynamics, and physical

Primer registro de Scelidotheriinae Ameghino (Xenartha, Mylodontidae) del Piso/Edad Chasiquense (Mioceno tardÃo) de la Argentina
he subfamily Scelidotheriinae constitutes a group of mylodontids widely represented in the Quaternary of South America; however, the fossil record of the Neogene taxa is still scarce. In the present paper, a new specimen of this subfamily, corresponding to a right partial hemimandible with complete dental series, is reported. The material was recovered from the lower levels of the Arenisca Albardón Member of the Loma de Las Tapias Formation (San Juan Province, Argentina), assigned to the late Miocene. This finding represents the first record of a member of the Scelidotheriinae from the Chasicoan Stage/Age and provides new information about the anatomical characteristics and the geographic distribution of the Neogene representatives of this subfamily.La subfamilia Scelidotheriinae constituye un grupo de milodóntidos ampliamente representados en el Cuaternario de América del Sur. Sin embargo, el registro fósil de los taxa del Neógeno es aun escaso. En este trabajo se presenta un nuevo ejemplar de esta subfamilia, correspondiente a un fragmento de hemimandÃbula derecha con la serie dentaria completa. El material fue recuperado de los niveles inferiores del Miembro Arenisca Albardón de la Formación Loma de Las Tapias (Provincia de San Juan, Argentina), asignados al Mioceno tardÃo. Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de un Scelidotheriinae para el Piso/Edad Chasiquense y aporta nueva información sobre las caracterÃsticas anatómicas y la distribución geográfica de los representantes neógenos de esta subfamilia
A multiwavelength study of young massive star forming regions: II. The dust environment
We present observations of 1.2-mm dust continuum emission, made with the
Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope, towards eighteen luminous IRAS point
sources, all with colors typical of compact HII regions and associated with
CS(2-1) emission, thought to be representative of young massive star forming
regions. Emission was detected toward all the IRAS objects. We find that the
1.2-mm sources associated with them have distinct physical parameters, namely
sizes of 0.4 pc, dust temperatures of 30 K, masses of 2x10^3 Msun, column
densities of 3x10^23 cm^-2, and densities of 4x10^5 cm^-3. We refer to these
dust structures as massive and dense cores. Most of the 1.2-mm sources show
single-peaked structures, several of which exhibit a bright compact peak
surrounded by a weaker extended envelope. The observed radial intensity
profiles of sources with this type of morphology are well fitted with power-law
intensity profiles with power-law indices in the range 1.0-1.7. This result
indicates that massive and dense cores are centrally condensed, having radial
density profiles with power-law indices in the range 1.5-2.2. We also find that
the UC HII regions detected with ATCA towards the IRAS sources investigated
here (Paper I) are usually projected at the peak position of the 1.2-mm dust
continuum emission, suggesting that massive stars are formed at the center of
the centrally condensed massive and dense cores.Comment: 6 figures, accepted by Ap
New type II Cepheids from VVV data towards the Galactic center
The Galactic center (GC) is the densest region of the Milky Way. Variability
surveys towards the GC potentially provide the largest number of variable stars
per square degree within the Galaxy. However, high stellar density is also a
drawback due to blending. Moreover, the GC is affected by extreme reddening,
therefore near infrared observations are needed. We plan to detect new variable
stars towards the GC, focusing on type II Cepheids (T2Cs) which have the
advantage of being brighter than RR Lyrae stars. We perform parallel
Lomb-Scargle and Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the
-band time series of the VISTA variables in the Via Lactea survey, to
detect periodicities. We employ statistical parameters to clean our sample. We
take account of periods, light amplitudes, distances, and proper motions to
provide a classification of the candidate variables. We detected 1,019 periodic
variable stars, of which 164 are T2Cs, 210 are Miras and 3 are classical
Cepheids. We also found the first anomalous Cepheid in this region. We compare
their photometric properties with overlapping catalogs and discuss their
properties on the color-magnitude and Bailey diagrams. We present the most
extensive catalog of T2Cs in the GC region to date. Offsets in E() and
in the reddening law cause very large (1-2 kpc) uncertainties on
distances in this region. We provide a catalog which will be the starting point
for future spectroscopic surveys in the innermost regions of the Galaxy.Comment: A&A, accepte
Completeness of evanescent modes in layered dielectrics
In the presence of a dielectric slab, the modes of the free electromagnetic field comprise traveling modes, consisting of incoming, reflected, and transmitted parts, as well as trapped modes that are subject to repeated total internal reflection and emerge as evanescent field outside the slab. Traveling modes have a continuous range of frequencies, but trapped modes occur only at certain discrete frequencies. We solve the problem of which relative weight to use when summing over all modes, as commonly required in perturbative calculations. We demonstrate the correctness of our method by showing the completeness of electromagnetic field modes in the presence of a dielectric slab. We derive a convenient method of summing over all modes by means of a single contour integral, which is very useful in standard quantum electrodynamic calculations
Echelle long-slit optical spectroscopy of evolved stars
We present echelle long-slit optical spectra of a sample of objects evolving
off the AGB, most of them in the pre-planetary nebula (pPN) phase, obtained
with the ESI and MIKE spectrographs at Keck-II and Magellan-I, respectively.
The total wavelength range covered with ESI (MIKE) is ~3900 to 10900 A (~3600
to 7200A). In this paper, we focus our analysis mainly on the Halpha profiles.
Prominent Halpha emission is detected in half of the objects, most of which
show broad Halpha wings (up to ~4000 km/s). In the majority of the
Halpha-emission sources, fast, post-AGB winds are revealed by P-Cygni profiles.
In ~37% of the objects Halpha is observed in absorption. In almost all cases,
the absorption profile is partially filled with emission, leading to complex,
structured profiles that are interpreted as an indication of incipient post-AGB
mass-loss. All sources in which Halpha is seen mainly in absorption have F-G
type central stars, whereas sources with intense Halpha emission span a larger
range of spectral types from O to G. Shocks may be an important excitation
agent of the close stellar surroundings for objects with late type central
stars. Sources with pure emission or P Cygni Halpha profiles have larger J-K
color excess than objects with Halpha mainly in absorption, which suggests the
presence of warm dust near the star in the former. The two classes of profile
sources also segregate in the IRAS color-color diagram in a way that intense
Halpha-emitters have dust grains with a larger range of temperatures.
