    Who’s Afraid of a Globalized World? Foreign Direct Investments, Local Knowledge and Allocation of Talents

    We study the distributional effects of globalization within a model of heterogeneous agents where both managerial talent and knowledge of the local economic environment are required in order to set up a firm in a given country. Therefore, agents willing to set up a firm in a foreign country need to incur a learning cost that depends on how different is the foreign entrepreneurial environments from the domestic one. In this context, we show that globalization fosters FDI and raises wages, output and productivity. Moreover, it benefits workers and highly talented multinational entrepreneurs, while harming low-ability domestic producers. The effects of openness follow from highly efficient foreign entrepreneurs driving inefficient local firms out of the market. We provide empirical evidence consistent with the implications of the model, showing a significant negative effect of the distance between nationwide regulations indexes on bilateral FDI flows.Multinational Firms, Heterogeneous Agents, Policy Harmonization

    This paper presents evidence on the effect of countries proximity in regulation on bilateral FDI flows. By exploiting the OECD International Direct Investment Statistics and data on nationwide regulation levels, we find a significant negative effect of the absolute value of the difference between countries indexes of regulation on the associated bilateral flows of FDIs, controlling for each country regulation level. Motivated by this evidence, we build a model where agents are heterogeneous and differ in their abilities to be entrepreneurs or workers. Entrepreneurs may engage in FDIs, which entails incurring additional fixed costs, one of which is the cost of learning the foreign regulation. In this framework, more similar regulations foster FDI, raise wages, output and productivity. The increase in productivity is the consequence of very efficient foreign entrepreneurs driving out of the market inefficient local firms, improving the allocation of talent in the economy as a whole.Multinational Firms, Heterogeneous Agents, Policy Harmonization

    Rho meson decay width in SU(2) gauge theories with 2 fundamental flavours

    7 pages, Proceedings of the 34th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory (Lattice 2016)SU(2) gauge theories with two quark flavours in the fundamental representation are among the most promising theories of composite dynamics describing the electroweak sector. Three out of five Goldstone bosons in these models become the longitudinal components of the W and Z bosons giving them mass. Like in QCD, we expect a spectrum of excitations which appear as resonances in vector boson scattering, in particular the vector resonance corresponding to the rho-meson in QCD. In this talk I will present the preliminary results of the first calculation of the rho-meson decay width in this theory, which is analogous to rho to two pions decay calculation in QCD. The results presented were calculated in a moving frame with total momentum (0,0,1) on two ensembles. Future plans include using 3 moving frames on a larger set of ensembles to extract the resonance parameters more reliably and also take the chiral and continuum limits

Four fermion interactions are a natural part of several extensions of the Standard Model, appearing as a low energy description of a more fundamental theory. In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking they are used to endow the Standard Model fermions with masses. In infrared conformal models these interaction, when sufficiently strong, can alter the dynamics of the fixed point, turning the theory into a (near) conformal model with desirable features for model building. As a first step toward the nonperturbative study of these models, we study the phase space of the ungauged NJL model

Four fermion interactions naturally occur in several extensions of the Standard Model as a low energy parameterisation of a more fundamental theory. In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking these operators, at an effective level, are used to endow the Standard Model fermions with masses. Furthermore these operators, when sufficiently strong, can drastically modify the fundamental composite dynamics by, for example, turning a strongly coupled infrared conformal theory into a (near) conformal one with desirable features for model building. As first step, we study spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking for the lattice version of the NJL model

    Praziquantel: its use in control of schistosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa and current research needs

    Treatment with praziquantel (PZQ) has become virtually the sole basis of schistosomiasis control in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere, and the drug is reviewed here in the context of the increasing rate that it is being used for this purpose. Attention is drawn to our relative lack of knowledge about the mechanisms of action of PZQ at the molecular level, the need for more work to be done on schistosome isolates that have been collected recently from endemic areas rather than those maintained in laboratory conditions for long periods, and our reliance for experimental work mainly on Schistosoma mansoni, little work having been done on S. haematobium. There is no evidence that resistance to PZQ has been induced in African schistosomes as a result of its large-scale use on that continent to date, but there is also no assurance that PZQ and/or schistosomes are in any way unique and that resistant organisms will not be selected as a result of widespread drug usage. The failure of PZQ to produce complete cures in populations given a routine treatment should therefore solicit considerable concern. With few alternatives to PZQ currently available and/or on the horizon, methods to monitor drug-susceptibility in African schistosomes need to be devised and used to help ensure that this drug remains effective for as long a time as possibl

We discuss how the model can be used as a template for composite Dark Matter (DM). We estimate one particular interaction of the DM candidate with the Standard Model : the interaction through photon exchange computing the electric polarizability of the DM candidate. Finally, we briefly discuss the viability of the model given the present experimental constraints

    Degradation of di-, tri-, tetra-, and pentachlorophenol mixtures in an aerobic biofilter

    Chlorophenols are highly toxic xenobiotic compounds, normally found in the effluents of many industries. Due to the high toxicity of these compounds, it is difficult to treat effluent streams containing high concentrations of chlorophenols. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the capabilities of an aerobic submerged filter previously characterized in the degradation of phenol and chlorophenols in the treatment of highly toxic di-, tri-, tetra- and penta- chlorophenols mixtures (200 - 800 mgL-1 as total phenols concentration). It is shown that the system is capable of treating up to 600 mgL-1 of total chlorophenols with excellent reduction values, and biodegradation rates (BDRs) between 87 - 97%, and 34 - 157 mgL-1 day-1, respectively (total organic carbon, TOC degradations up to80%). In the case of the 800 mgL-1, a strong inhibition due to the high toxicity of the mixture was observed. The system reduced the influent toxicity (EC50 or toxic units) by 48 - 76%, even when the initial toxicities of the mixtures were in the range of 40 - 358 toxic units (classified as very toxic). The kinetics of the phenol and TOC degradation were characterized through a first order kinetic expression. The values of TPho, TOCo, k1 and k2 are reported for the biodegradation of the total phenols and for the TOC, respectively.     SU(3) sextet model with Wilson fermions

    We investigate the spectrum and IR properties of the SU(3) "sextet" model with two Dirac fermions in the two-index symmetric representation via lattice simulations. This model is a prime candidate for a realization of Walking Technicolor, which features a minimal matter content and it is expected to be inside or very close to the lower boundary of the conformal window. We use the Wilson discretization for the fermions and map the phase structure of the lattice model. We study several spectral and gradient flow observables both in the bulk and the weak coupling phases. While in the bulk phase we find clear signs of chiral symmetry breaking, in the weak coupling phase there is no clear indication for it, and instead the chiral limit of the model seems compatible with an IR-conformal behavior.Comment: 32 pages, many figure

    Macrofaunal communities in the Gioia Canyon (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

    Submarine canyons play pivotal roles in the physical, biological and ecological processes of coastal areas, especially in closed or semi-closed basins as the Mediterranean Sea, influencing the biodiversity and the abundance of the benthic fauna. On February 2013, during the Tyrrhenian Gravity Flows (TyGraF) campaign, samples have been collected along the Gioia Canyon Basin (Italy) with the aim to describe the taxonomical composition and the abundances of the macrobenthic assemblages, filling the gap of knowledge in this area. A total of 93 taxa were identified, and the Annelida was the phylum with the highest number of specimens and most diversified (46 taxa). The polychaetes Sternaspis scutata, Prionospio cirrifera and Monticellina sp., the bivalves Thyasira sp.1 and Saccella commutata and the amphipods belonging to the genera Ampelisca and Harpinia showed the highest densities in the studied area; however, results suggest low values of the abundances of the macrobenthos if compared with those generally reported for other canyons, both inside and outside the Mediterranean Sea. The marine biotic index (AMBI) highlights that the canyon system and the surrounded area were slightly disturbed and characterized by a high percentage of tolerant taxa.
