Nonequilibrium stationary states with ratchet effect
An ensemble of particles in thermal equilibrium at temperature , modeled
by Nos\`e-Hoover dynamics, moves on a triangular lattice of oriented semi-disk
elastic scatterers. Despite the scatterer asymmetry a directed transport is
clearly ruled out by the second law of thermodynamics. Introduction of a
polarized zero mean monochromatic field creates a directed stationary flow with
nontrivial dependence on temperature and field parameters. We give a
theoretical estimate of directed current induced by a microwave field in an
antidot superlattice in semiconductor heterostructures.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (small changes added
Size effects in radiospectroscopy spectra of ferroelectric nanopowders
The theoretical and experimental investigation of ferroelectric nanopowders
is performed. The manifestation in radiospectroscopy spectra of size driven
ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at some critical particle average
size was the main goal of the consideration. In theoretical part the size
effect for the materials with ferroelectric tetragonal phase and cubic
paraelectric phase was considered allowing for the spontaneous polarization
inhomogeneity inside a particle and distribution of particle sizes. In ESR the
transformation of the spectra from tetragonal symmetry to cubic symmetry with
decreasing of nanoparticle sizes was calculated. Measurements of Fe3+ ESR
spectra in nanopowder of BaTiO3 were carried out at room temperature. The
decrease of intensity of tetragonal symmetry ESR lines of Fe3+ and appearance
of cubic symmetry line with asymmetry of the shoulders was observed with the
average sizes decrease with complete disappearance of tetragonal spectrum at
average size less or equal 40 nm. The comparison of the theory with experiment
was carried out. The value of critical size Rc = 40 nm was extracted from ESR
data. The asymmetry and broadening of right hand side shoulder of ESR cubic
symmetry line was shown to be related to contribution of paramagnetic centers
in the vicinity of the particles surface. The deconvolution of the cubic line
allowed to show, that this region size is about 3 nm.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Influence of probe pressure on diffuse reflectance spectra of human skin measured in vivo
Mechanical pressure superficially applied on the human skin surface by a fiber-optic probe influences the spatial distribution of blood within the cutaneous tissues. Upon gradual load of weight on the probe, a stepwise increase in the skin reflectance spectra is observed. The decrease in the load follows the similar inverse staircase-like tendency. The observed stepwise reflectance spectra changes are due to, respectively, sequential extrusion of blood from the topical cutaneous vascular beds and their filling afterward. The obtained results are confirmed by Monte Carlo modeling. This implies that pressure-induced influence during the human skin diffuse reflectance spectra measurements in vivo should be taken into consideration, in particular, in the rapidly developing area of wearable gadgets for real-time monitoring of various human body parameters
Visualizing quantum entanglement and the EPR paradox during the photodissociation of a diatomic molecule using two ultrashort laser pulses
We investigate theoretically the dissociative ionization of a H2+ molecule
using two ultrashort laser (pump-probe) pulses. The pump pulse prepares a
dissociating nuclear wave packet on an ungerade surface of H2+. Next, an UV (or
XUV) probe pulse ionizes this dissociating state at large (R = 20 - 100 bohr)
internuclear distance. We calculate the momenta distributions of protons and
photoelectrons which show a (two-slit-like) interference structure. A general,
simple interference formula is obtained which depends on the electron and
protons momenta, as well as on the pump-probe delay on the pulses durations and
polarizations. This interference can be interpreted as visualization of an
electron state delocalized over the two-centres. This state is an entangled
state of a hydrogen atom with a momentum p and a proton with an opposite
momentum. -p dissociating on the ungerade surface of H2+. This pump-probe
scheme can be used to reveal the nonlocality of the electron which intuitively
should be localized on just one of the protons separated by the distance R much
larger than the atomic Bohr orbit
Spatial distribution of Cherenkov radiation in periodic dielectric media
The nontrivial dispersion relation of a periodic medium affects both the
spectral and the spatial distribution of Cherenkov radiation. We present a
theory of the spatial distribution of Cherenkov radiation in the far-field zone
inside arbitrary three- and two-dimensional dielectric media. Simple analytical
expressions for the far-field are obtained in terms of the Bloch mode
expansion. Numerical examples of the Cherenkov radiation in a two-dimensional
photonic crystal is presented. The developed analytical theory demonstrates
good agreement with numerically rigorous finite-difference time-domain
calculations.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, Journal of Optics A (in press
Coherent radiation from neutral molecules moving above a grating
We predict and study the quantum-electrodynamical effect of parametric
self-induced excitation of a molecule moving above the dielectric or conducting
medium with periodic grating. In this case the radiation reaction force
modulates the molecular transition frequency which results in a parametric
instability of dipole oscillations even from the level of quantum or thermal
fluctuations. The present mechanism of instability of electrically neutral
molecules is different from that of the well-known Smith-Purcell and transition
radiation in which a moving charge and its oscillating image create an
oscillating dipole.
We show that parametrically excited molecular bunches can produce an easily
detectable coherent radiation flux of up to a microwatt.Comment: 4 page
Electron spin resonance investigation of Mn^{2+} ions and their dynamics in manganese doped SrTiO_3
Using electron spin resonance, lattice position and dynamic properties of
Mn2+ ions were studied in 0.5 and 2 % manganese doped SrTiO3 ceramics prepared
by conventional mixed oxide method. The measurements showed that Mn2+ ions
substitute preferably up to 97 % for Sr if the ceramics is prepared with a
deficit of Sr ions. Motional narrowing of the Mn2+ ESR spectrum was observed
when temperature increases from 120 K to 240-250 K that was explained as a
manifestation of off-center position of this ion at the Sr site. From the
analysis of the ESR spectra the activation energy Ea = 86 mV and frequency
factor 1/?0 ? (2-10)x10^(-14) 1/s for jumping of the impurity between
symmetrical off-center positions were determined. Both values are in agreement
with those derived previously from dielectric relaxation. This proves the
origin of dielectric anomalies in SrTiO3:Mn as those produced by the
reorientation dynamics of Mn2+ dipoles.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
Photocurrent, Rectification, and Magnetic Field Symmetry of Induced Current Through Quantum Dots
We report mesoscopic dc current generation in an open chaotic quantum dot
with ac excitation applied to one of the shape-defining gates. For excitation
frequencies large compared to the inverse dwell time of electrons in the dot
(i.e., GHz), we find mesoscopic fluctuations of induced current that are fully
asymmetric in the applied perpendicular magnetic field, as predicted by recent
theory. Conductance, measured simultaneously, is found to be symmetric in
field. In the adiabatic (i.e., MHz) regime, in contrast, the induced current is
always symmetric in field, suggesting its origin is mesoscopic rectification.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
