Optical chaos in nonlinear photonic crystals

    Get PDF
We examine a spatial evolution of lightwaves in a nonlinear photonic crystal with a quadratic nonlinearity when simultaneously a second harmonic and a sum-frequency generation are quasi-phase-matched. We find the conditions of a transition to Hamiltonian chaos for different amplitudes of lightwaves at the boundary of the crystal.Comment: LaTEX2e, 5 pages, 4 figure

Self-consistent approach for the quantum confined Stark effect in shallow quantum wells

A computationally efficient, self-consistent complex scaling approach to calculating characteristics of excitons in an external electric field in quantum wells is introduced. The method allows one to extract the resonance position as well as the field-induced broadening for the exciton resonance. For the case of strong confinement the trial function is represented in factorized form. The corresponding coupled self-consistent equations, which include the effective complex potentials, are obtained. The method is applied to the shallow quantum well. It is shown that in this case the real part of the effective exciton potential is insensitive to changes of external electric field up to the ionization threshold, while the imaginary part has non-analytical field dependence and small for moderate electric fields. This allows one to express the exciton quasi-energy at some field through the renormalized expression for the zero-field bound state.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX4, 6 figure

Optical models of the molecular atmosphere

    Get PDF
The use of optical and laser methods for performing atmospheric investigations has stimulated the development of the optical models of the atmosphere. The principles of constructing the optical models of molecular atmosphere for radiation with different spectral composition (wideband, narrowband, and monochromatic) are considered in the case of linear and nonlinear absorptions. The example of the development of a system which provides for the modeling of the processes of optical-wave energy transfer in the atmosphere is presented. Its physical foundations, structure, programming software, and functioning were considered

Q-phonon description of low lying 1^- two-phonon states in spherical nuclei

The properties of 1^-_1 two-phonon states and the characteristics of E1 transition probabilities between low-lying collective states in spherical nuclei are analysed within the Q-phonon approach to the description of collective states. Several relations between observables are obtained. Microscopic calculations of the E1 0^+_1 -> 1^-_1 transition matrix elements are performed on the basis of the RPA. A satisfactory description of the experimental data is obtained.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, 9 table

Angular distributions of scattered excited muonic hydrogen atoms

Differential cross sections of the Coulomb deexcitation in the collisions of excited muonic hydrogen with the hydrogen atom have been studied for the first time. In the framework of the fully quantum-mechanical close-coupling approach both the differential cross sections for the nlnlnl \to n'l' transitions and ll-averaged differential cross sections have been calculated for exotic atom in the initial states with the principle quantum number n=26n=2 - 6 at relative motion energies Ecm=0.0115E_{\rm {cm}}=0.01 - 15 eV and at scattering angles θcm=0180\theta_{\rm {cm}}=0 - 180^{\circ}. The vacuum polarization shifts of the nsns-states are taken into account. The calculated in the same approach differential cross sections of the elastic and Stark scattering are also presented. The main features of the calculated differential cross sections are discussed and a strong anisotropy of cross sections for the Coulomb deexcitation is predicted.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figure

Local video-positioning system for industrial GPR

    Get PDF
This article presents a local positioning system working with the industrial GPR OKO-2 (LOGIS) in the process of radio measurements. Here we discuss principles of the positioning system and the method of transferring location data into the GPR system as satellite data. The location uses a video recording of special tapes, which limit the scanning area. Tapes contain the special periodic pattern. A pair of video cameras are placed directly on the GPR body, cameras will register images of the limiting tapes. Results of experimental approbation of the GPR complex confirm the applicability of the system

Ab-initio study of cation-rich InP(001) and GaP(001) surface reconstructions and iodine adsorption

    Get PDF
Atomic and electronic structures for a number of InP and GaP (001) surface geometries were studied within the density functional theory (DFT) in order to reexamine the energy stability of surface reconstructions in the cation-rich limit. It is shown that in both cases the mixed dimer (2×4) reconstruction is the energetically favored in the cation rich limit. The ζ(4×2) reconstruction has the lowest surface energy among considered (4×2) surface structures. Comparative theoretical study of iodine adsorption on the semiconductor surface with ζ(4×2) and mixed dimer (2×4) structures was performed. It was shown that iodine prefers to be bonded with dimerized cation atoms irrespective on the surface reconstruction

On the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for a Dirac spinor in torsion and other CPT and Lorentz violating backgrounds

We discuss the possibility to perform and use the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation (EFWT) for the Dirac spinor coupled to different CPT and Lorentz violating terms. The classification of such terms is performed, selecting those of them which admit EFWT. For the particular example of an axial vector field, which can be associated with the completely antisymmetric torsion, we construct an explicit EFWT in the case when only a timelike component of this axial vector is present. In the cases when EFWT is not possible, one can still use the corresponding technique for deriving the perturbative Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, as is illustrated in a particular example in the Appendix
