A method of open cluster membership determination
A new method for the determination of open cluster membership based on a
cumulative effect is proposed. In the field of a plate the relative x and y
coordinate positions of each star with respect to all the other stars are
added. The procedure is carried out for two epochs t_1 and t_2 separately, then
one sum is subtracted from another. For a field star the differences in its
relative coordinate positions of two epochs will be accumulated. For a cluster
star, on the contrary, the changes in relative positions of cluster members at
t_1 and t_2 will be very small. On the histogram of sums the cluster stars will
gather to the left of the diagram, while the field stars will form a tail to
the right. The procedure allows us to efficiently discriminate one group from
another. The greater the distance between t_1 and t_2 and the more cluster
stars present, the greater is the effect. The accumulation method does not
require reference stars, determination of centroids and modelling the
distribution of field stars, necessary in traditional methods. By the proposed
method 240 open clusters have been processed, including stars up to m<13. The
membership probabilities have been calculated and compared to those obtained by
the most commonly used Vasilevskis-Sanders method. The similarity of the
results acquired the two different approaches is satisfactory for the majority

Histogram comparison as a powerful tool for the search of new physics at LHC. Application to CMSSM
We propose a rigorous and effective way to compare experimental and
theoretical histograms, incorporating the different sources of statistical and
systematic uncertainties. This is a useful tool to extract as much information
as possible from the comparison between experimental data with theoretical
simulations, optimizing the chances of identifying New Physics at the LHC. We
illustrate this by showing how a search in the CMSSM parameter space, using
Bayesian techniques, can effectively find the correct values of the CMSSM
parameters by comparing histograms of events with multijets + missing
transverse momentum displayed in the effective-mass variable. The procedure is
in fact very efficient to identify the true supersymmetric model, in the case
supersymmetry is really there and accessible to the LHC
Estrategias para educar en valores desde los contenidos de Ciencias Naturales
El propósito de la investigación fue describir y evaluar la efectividad del programa didáctico, que orientó la ejecución del proyecto: Estrategias didácticas para educar en valores desde los contenidos de Ciencias Naturales. La investigación, de naturaleza cualitativa, se realizó con un enfoque de investigación-acción. Los informantes fueron estudiantes de la carrera docente (UPEL Maracay, Venezuela). El programa didáctico evaluado, se propone para operacionalizar los procesos de investigación necesarios para el desarrollo del proyecto, el afianzamiento de los valores del estudiante, la sensibilización hacia su papel en la educación en valores, y el entrenamiento para diseñar actividades y recursos propios de la didáctica de los valores. Los hallazgos empíricos obtenidos durante la evaluación, muestran que el programa didáctico desarrollado es efectivo
Transient quantum evolution of 2D electrons under photoexcitation of a deep center
We have considered the ballistic propagation of the 2D electron Wigner
distribution, which is excited by an ultrashort optical pulse from a
short-range impurity into the first quantized subband of a selectively-doped
heterostructure with high mobility. Transient ionization of a deep local state
into a continuum conduction c-band state is described. Since the quantum nature
of the photoexcitation, the Wigner distribution over 2D plane appears to be an
alternating-sign function. Due to a negative contribution to the Wigner
function, the mean values (concentration, energy, and flow) demonstrate an
oscillating transient evolution in contrast to the diffusive classical regime

Snake orbits and related magnetic edge states
We study the electron motion near magnetic field steps at which the strength
and/or sign of the magnetic field changes. The energy spectrum for such systems
is found and the electron states (bound and scattered) are compared with their
corresponding classical paths. Several classical properties as the velocity
parallel to the edge, the oscillation frequency perpendicular to the edge and
the extent of the states are compared with their quantum mechanical
counterpart. A class of magnetic edge states is found which do not have a

Ultrarobust calibration of an optical lattice depth based on a phase shift
We report on a new method to calibrate the depth of an optical lattice. It
consists in triggering the intrasite dipole mode of the cloud by a sudden phase
shift. The corresponding oscillatory motion is directly related to the
intraband frequencies on a large range of lattice depths. Remarkably, for a
moderate displacement, a single frequency dominates this oscillation for the
zeroth and first order interference pattern observed after a sufficiently long
time-of-flight. The method is robust against atom-atom interactions and the
exact value of the extra external confinement of the initial trapping

Conceptual inconsistencies in finite-dimensional quantum and classical mechanics
Utilizing operational dynamic modeling [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 190403 (2012);
arXiv:1105.4014], we demonstrate that any finite-dimensional representation of
quantum and classical dynamics violates the Ehrenfest theorems. Other
peculiarities are also revealed, including the nonexistence of the free
particle and ambiguity in defining potential forces. Non-Hermitian mechanics is
shown to have the same problems. This work compromises a popular belief that
finite-dimensional mechanics is a straightforward discretization of the
