OBJECTIVE: To assess the predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in patients in a non-cardiac intensive care unit. METHODS: A total of 418 hospitalized patients were analyzed between January and September 2016 in a non-cardiac intensive care unit. Clinical characteristics, interventions, and biochemical markers were recorded during hospitalization. In-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay in the intensive care unit were also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 310 patients were included. The mean age of the patients was 61.0 ± 18.3 years, 49.4% were male, and 23.5% presented de novo atrial fibrillation. The multivariate model identified previous stroke (OR = 10.09; p = 0.016) and elevated levels of pro-B type natriuretic peptide (proBNP, OR = 1.28 for each 1,000pg/mL increment; p = 0.004) as independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation. Analysis of the proBNP receiver operating characteristic curve for prediction of de novo atrial fibrillation revealed an area under the curve of 0.816 (p 5,666pg/mL. There were no differences in mortality (p = 0.370), but the lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.002) and stay in the intensive care unit (p = 0.031) were higher in patients with de novo atrial fibrillation. CONCLUSIONS: A history of previous stroke and elevated proBNP during hospitalization were independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in the polyvalent intensive care unit. The proBNP is a useful and easy- and quick-access tool in the stratification of atrial fibrillation risk.

Two-band superconductivity in doped SrTiO3_{3} films and interfaces

We investigate the possibility of multi-band superconductivity in SrTiO3_{3} films and interfaces using a two-dimensional two-band model. In the undoped compound, one of the bands is occupied whereas the other is empty. As the chemical potential shifts due to doping by negative charge carriers or application of an electric field, the second band becomes occupied, giving rise to a strong enhancement of the transition temperature and a sharp feature in the gap functions, which is manifested in the local density of states spectrum. By comparing our results with tunneling experiments in Nb-doped SrTiO3_{3}, we find that intra-band pairing dominates over inter-band pairing, unlike other known multi-band superconductors. Given the similarities with the value of the transition temperature and with the band structure of LaAlO3_{3}/SrTiO3_{3} heterostructures, we speculate that the superconductivity observed in SrTiO3_{3} interfaces may be similar in nature to that of bulk SrTiO3_{3}, involving multiple bands with distinct electronic occupations.Comment: revised expanded versio

Elastic properties of carbon nanotubes and their heterojunctions

Comprehensive studies on the modelling and numerical simulation of the mechanical behaviour under tension, bending and torsion of single-walled carbon nanotubes and their heterojunctions are performed. It is proposed to deduce the mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes heterojunctions from the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the single-walled carbon nanotubes, which are their constituent key unit

The AGN properties of the starburst galaxy NGC 7582

NGC 7582 was identified as a Starburst galaxy in the optical \cite[(Veron et al. 1981)]{Veron et al.(1981)} but its X-Ray emission is typical of a Seyfert 1 galaxy \cite[(Ward et al. 1978)]{Ward et al.(1978)}. We analyzed a datacube of this object obtained with the GMOS-IFU on the Gemini-South telescope. After a subtraction of the stellar component using the {\sc starlight} code \cite[(Cid Fernandes et al. 2005)]{Cid Fernandes et al. (2005)}, we looked for optical signatures of the AGN. We detected a broad HαH\alpha component (figure \ref{fig1}) in the source where \cite[Bianchi et al.(2007)]{Bianchi et al.(2007)} identified the AGN in an HST optical image. We also found a broad HβH\beta feature (figure \ref{fig2}), but its emission reveals a extended source. We suggest that it is the light of the AGN scattered in the ionization cone. We propose that NGC 7582 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy. A number of other "hot-spots" and Wolf-Rayet features were also identified.Comment: 1 page, 2 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the IAU Symposium no. 26

Three-dimensional numerical simulation of Vickers indentation tests

The development of depth sensing indentation equipment has allowed easy and reliable determination of two of the most popular measured mechanical properties of materials: the hardness and the Young's modulus. However, some difficulties emerge in the experimental procedure to calculate accurate values of these properties. This is related to, for example, the tip geometrical imperfections of the diamond pyramidal indenter and the definition of the contact area at the maximum load. Being so, numerical simulation of ultramicrohardness tests can be a helpful tool for better understanding of the influence of these parameters on procedures for determining the hardness and the Young's modulus. For this purpose, specific finite element simulation software, HAFILM, was developed to simulate the ultramicrohardness tests. Different mesh refinements were tested because of the dependence between the values of the mechanical properties and the size of the finite element mesh. Another parameter studied in this work is the value of the friction coefficient between the indenter and the sample in the numerical simulation. In order to obtain numerical results close to reality, a common geometry and size of the imperfection of the tip of Vickers indenter was taken into account for the numerical description of the indenter.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6VJS-4FXNRM9-2/1/fc471d8e5a726ca5ef37aaf842f333c
