    Embedding the concept of ecosystems services:The utilisation of ecological knowledge in different policy venues

    The concept of ecosystem services is increasingly being promoted by academics and policy makers as a means to protect ecological systems through more informed decision making. A basic premise of this approach is that strengthening the ecological knowledge base will significantly enhance ecosystem health through more sensitive decision making. However, the existing literature on knowledge utilisation, and many previous attempts to improve decision making through better knowledge integration, suggest that producing ‘more knowledge’ is only ever a necessary but insufficient condition for greater policy success. We begin this paper by reviewing what is already known about the relationship between ecological knowledge development and utilisation, before introducing a set of theme issue papers that examine—for the very first time—how this politically and scientifically salient relationship plays out across a number of vital policy venues such as land-use planning, policy-level impact assessment, and cost–benefit analysis. Following a detailed synthesis of the key findings of all the papers, this paper identifies and explores new research and policy challenges in this important and dynamic area of environmental governance

    Access and allocation in earth system governance: Water and climate change compared

    A significant percentage of the global population does not yet have access to safe drinking water, sufficient food or energy to live in dignity. There is a continuous struggle to allocate the earth's resources among users and uses. This article argues that distributional problems have two faces: access to basic resources or ecospace; and, the allocation of environmental resources, risks, burdens, and responsibilities for causing problems. Furthermore, addressing problems of access and allocation often requires access to social processes (science, movements and law). Analysts, however, have tended to take a narrow, disciplinary approach although an integrated conceptual approach may yield better answers. This article proposes a multi-disciplinary perspective to the problem of access and allocation and illustrates its application to water management and climate change. © The Author(s) 2010

    Textile Functionalization by Porous Protein Crystal Conjugation and Guest Molecule Loading

    Protein crystals are versatile nanostructured materials that can be readily engineered for applications in nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology. Despite their versatility, the small size of typical individual protein crystals (less than one cubic mm) presents challenges for macroscale applications. One way to overcome this limitation is by immobilizing protein crystals onto larger substrates. Cotton is composed primarily of cellulose, the most common natural fiber in the world, and is routinely used in numerous material applications including textiles, explosives, paper, and bookbinding. Here, two types of protein crystals were conjugated to the cellulosic substrate of cotton fabric using a 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole/aldehyde mediated coupling protocol. The efficacy of this attachment was assessed via accelerated laundering and quantified by fluorescence imaging. The ability to load guest molecules of varying sizes into the scaffold structure of the conjugated protein crystals was also assessed. This work demonstrates the potential to create multifunctional textiles by incorporating diverse protein crystal scaffolds that can be infused with a multiplicity of useful guest molecules. Cargo molecule loading and release kinetics will depend on the size of the guest molecules as well as the protein crystal solvent channel geometry. Here, we demonstrate the loading of a small molecule dye into the small pores of hen egg white lysozyme crystals and a model enzyme into the 13-nm pores delimited by “CJ” crystals composed of an isoprenoid-binding protein from Campylerbacter jejuni
