Familon emission by dense magnetized plasma
Emission of a familon caused by the processes , in dense magnetized plasma is investigated in the model in which
a familon have both direct and no direct coupling to leptons via plasmon. The
process probabilities and the integral familon action on plasma are calculated.
It is shown that the odd interference phenomenon in the process leads to the familon force acting on plasma along the magnetic

On the -- lifetime difference and decays
In this paper we discuss some aspects of inclusive decays of charmed mesons
and also decays of the lepton into . We find that phase
space effects are likely to explain the observed lifetime ratio = 1.17. In particular one need not appeal to a large annihilation
contribution in the inclusive decay which, being absent in decays
could also contribute to the enhanced decay rate relative to that of the
. Examining a separate problem, we find that the rate for is almost completely dominated by the tiny phase space for the
final eight particle state. Using an effective chiral Lagrangian to estimate
the matrix element yields a branching ratio into the channel of interest far
smaller than the present upper bound.Comment: No figure
Biophysical Features of Bacillithiol, the Glutathione Surrogate of Bacillus subtilis and other Firmicutes
Bacillithiol (BSH) is the major low-molecular-weight (LMW) thiol in many low-G+C Gram-positive bacteria (Firmicutes). Evidence now emerging suggests that BSH functions as an important LMW thiol in redox regulation and xenobiotic detoxification, analogous to what is already known for glutathione and mycothiol in other microorganisms. The biophysical properties and cellular concentrations of such LMW thiols are important determinants of their biochemical efficiency both as biochemical nucleophiles and as redox buffers. Here, BSH has been characterised and compared with other LMW thiols in terms of its thiol pKa, redox potential and thiol–disulfide exchange reactivity. Both the thiol pKa and the standard thiol redox potential of BSH are shown to be significantly lower than those of glutathione whereas the reactivities of the two compounds in thiol–disulfide reactions are comparable. The cellular concentration of BSH in Bacillus subtilis varied over different growth phases and reached up to 5 mM, which is significantly greater than previously observed from single measurements taken during mid-exponential growth. These results demonstrate that the biophysical characteristics of BSH are distinctively different from those of GSH and that its cellular concentrations can reach levels much higher than previously reported
Photon-pair conversion into neutrinos in a strong magnetic field
A general analysis of the three-vertex loop amplitude in a strong magnetic
field, based on the asymptotic form of the electron propagator in the field, is
performed. In order to investigate the photon-neutrino process gamma gamma ->
nu bar nu, the vertex combinations of the scalar-vector-vector (SVV),
pseudoscalar-vector-vector (PVV), 3-vector (VVV), and
axial-vector-vector-vector (AVV) types are considered. It is shown that only
the SVV amplitude grows linearly with the magnetic field strength, while in the
other amplitudes, PVV, VVV, and AVV, the linearly growing terms are cancelled.
The process gamma gamma -> nu bar nu is investigated in the
left-right-symmetric extension of the standard model of electroweak
interaction, where the effective scalar nu nu e e coupling could exist.
Possible astrophysical manifestations of the considered process are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, to appear in Modern Physics Letters
Neutralino Dark Matter Elastic Scattering in a Flat and Accelerating Universe
In SUGRA inspired supersymmetric models with universal boundary conditions
for the soft masses, the scalar cross section for the elastic
neutralino--nucleon scattering is in general several orders of magnitude below
the sensitivity of current experiments. For large and low
values, the theoretically predicted can
approach the sensitivity of these experiments () being at
the same time in agreement with recent cosmological data, which impose severe
restrictions on the CDM relic density, and with accelerator experiments which
put lower bounds on sparticle and Higgs boson masses. Further improvement of
the sensitivity of DAMA and CDMS experiments will probe the large
region of the parameter space in the vicinity of the boundaries of the

Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay
The data of the Heidelberg-Moscow double beta decay experiment for the
measuring period August 1990 - May 2000 (54.9813 kg y or 723.44 molyears),
published recently, are analyzed using the potential of the Bayesian method for
low counting rates. First evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is
observed giving first evidence for lepton number violation. The evidence for
this decay mode is 97% (2.2\sigma) with the Bayesian method, and 99.8% c.l.
(3.1\sigma) with the method recommended by the Particle Data Group. The
half-life of the process is found with the Bayesian method to be T_{1/2}^{0\nu}
= (0.8 - 18.3) x 10^{25} y (95% c.l.) with a best value of 1.5 x 10^{25} y. The
deduced value of the effective neutrino mass is, with the nuclear matrix
elements from [Sta90,Tom91] = (0.11 - 0.56) eV (95% c.l.), with a best
value of 0.39 eV. Uncertainties in the nuclear matrix elements may widen the
range given for the effective neutrino mass by at most a factor 2. Our
observation which at the same time means evidence that the neutrino is a
Majorana particle, will be of fundamental importance for neutrino physics.

The decay eta_c^prime -> eta_c pi pi
It is pointed out that the decay of the recently observed charmonium
eta_c^prime resonance, eta_c^prime -> eta_c pi pi is simply related to the well
studied decay psi^prime -> J/psi pi pi and can thus be used for absolute
normalization of other decay modes of the eta_c^prime. The total rate of the
discussed decay should be approximately three to four times the corresponding
rate for the psi^prime$ resonance making the channel with charged pions the
most probable exclusive decay mode of the eta_c^prime with the branching ratio
in the range 5-10 %.Comment: 5 pages, references adde

A Preliminary Indication of Evolution of Type Ia Supernovae from their Risetimes
We have compared the risetime for samples of nearby and high-redshift type Ia
supernovae (SNe Ia).
The fiducial risetime of the nearby SNe Ia is 2.5+/-0.4 days longer than the
proemial risetime determined by Goldhaber (1998a,b) for high-redshift SNe
Ia from the Supernova Cosmology Project.
The statistical likelihood that the two samples have different fiducial
risetimes is high (5.8 sigma) and indicates possible evolution between the
samples of SNe Ia. We consider the likely effects of several sources of
systematic error, but none of these resolves the difference in the risetimes.
Currently, we cannot directly determine the impact of the apparent evolution
