    Power And Energy Demand to Support E-Mobility on Highway: The Italian Case Study

    In recent years, market trends are confirming the increasing use of electric vehicles for private mobility. The use of such vehicles is inevitably affecting highway contexts as well. Therefore, highway network operators need to plan for the installation of adequate infrastructure to enable and manage the growing demand for fast charging expected in the coming years. This paper aims to assess the impact that this charging demand may have on the service areas (SAs) of the highway network operated by Autostrade per l'Italia. Starting from available traffic data, this paper proposes a methodology to forecast, for each service area, the future charging needs of EVs on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. The analysis considers both the energy and the power that needs to be made available to ensure charging during daily traffic peaks. The results show that the impact generated by EVs will be generally significant, especially in terms of power demands with peaks between two and three megawatts. The methodology developed is entirely general and therefore applicable for similar planning in other highway or suburban roadway contexts. The validity of the developed methodology and the made assumptions have been preliminary confirmed through an initial set of data collected from one of the charging stations installed in one representative service area

    2-10 keV luminosity of high-mass binaries as a gauge of ongoing star-formation rate

    Based on recent work on spectral decomposition of the emission of star-forming galaxies, we assess whether the integrated 2-10 keV emission from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), L_{2-10}^{HMXB}, can be used as a reliable estimator of ongoing star formation rate (SFR). Using a sample of 46 local (z < 0.1) star forming galaxies, and spectral modeling of ASCA, BeppoSAX, and XMM-Newton data, we demonstrate the existence of a linear SFR-L_{2-10}^{HMXB} relation which holds over ~5 decades in X-ray luminosity and SFR. The total 2-10 keV luminosity is not a precise SFR indicator because at low SFR (i.e., in normal and moderately-starbursting galaxies) it is substantially affected by the emission of low-mass X-ray binaries, which do not trace the current SFR due to their long evolution lifetimes, while at very high SFR (i.e., for very luminous FIR-selected galaxies) it is frequently affected by the presence of strongly obscured AGNs. The availability of purely SB-powered galaxies - whose 2-10 keV emission is mainly due to HMXBs - allows us to properly calibrate the SFR-L_{2-10}^{HMXB} relation. The SFR-L_{2-10}^{HMXB} relation holds also for distant (z ~ 1) galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North sample, for which we lack spectral information, but whose SFR can be estimated from deep radio data. If confirmed by more detailed observations, it may be possible to use the deduced relation to identify distant galaxies that are X-ray overluminous for their (independently estimated) SFR, and are therefore likely to hide strongly absorbed AGNs.Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press (15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

    Origin of the X-Ray Background and AGN Unification: New Perspectives

    We critically review the basic assumptions of the standard model for the synthesis of the XRB in the light of new data from ultradeep surveys by Chandra and XMM, resolving major parts of it. Important constraints come in particular from the observed z-distributions of faint hard X-ray sources -- showing large excesses at redshifts (z~0.8) much lower than expected by the synthesis models -- and from their X/optical/IR SEDs combined with the IR counts of type-II AGNs. Our analysis, although supporting the general scheme which interprets the XRB as due to absorbed AGNs with broad N_H distributions, requires major revision of the other postulate of the XRB synthesis models: the AGN unification. We argue that the unification scheme based on a simple orientation effect fails at high redshifts, where galaxy activity is induced by strong interactions and mergers among gas-rich systems. This helps explaining the observational evidence that type-I and II AGNs follow different evolutionary patterns, with type-I quasars providing a very biased trace of this activity. Combined deep X-ray and IR surveys consistently find that the universe has experienced a violent phase of galaxy activity around z~1, probably related with the assembly of massive galaxies, involving both SF and obscured AGN fueling. Roughly 10 to 20% of this activity has involved substantial AGN emission, this fraction likely reflecting the AGN/starburst duty cycle during the activation phase.Comment: 5 pages, to appear in MNRA

    In this paper we discuss temporal and spatial patterns of brain hemodynamics under rest and motor stimulation conditions obtained by functional magnetic resonance imaging and simultaneous fast multi-channel near-infrared spectro-imaging in the human motor cortex. Our data indicate that the main difference between the brain hemodynamics under the repetitive stimulation and the rest conditions is not in the appearance of hemoglobin concentration changes during the stimulations (since fluctuations occur at rest as well), but in their more regular, Le. phase-synchronous with the stimulation behavior

    XMM-Newton observations of ULIRGs I: A Compton-thick AGN in IRAS19254-7245

    We present the XMM-Newton observation of the merging system IRAS 19254-7245, also known as The Superantennae, whose southern nucleus is classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The XMM-Newton data have allowed us to perform a detailed X-ray imaging and spectral analysis of this system. We clearly detect, for the first time in this system, a strong EW ~ 1.4 keV Fe emission line at 6.49+/-0.1 keV (rest-frame). The X-ray spectrum requires a soft thermal component (kT~0.9 keV; L(0.5-2) ~ 4E41 cgs), likely associated with the starburst, and a hard power-law continuum above 2 keV (observed L(2-10) ~ 4E42 cgs). We confirm the flatness of this latter component, already noted in previous ASCA data. This flatness, together with the detection of the strong Fe-Kalpha line and other broad band indicators, suggest the presence of a Compton-thick AGN with intrinsic luminosity > 1E44 cgs. We show that a Compton-thick model can perfectly reproduce the X-ray spectral properties of this object.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Latex manuscript, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Bifurcations and Chaos in the Six-Dimensional Turbulence Model of Gledzer

    The cascade-shell model of turbulence with six real variables originated by Gledzer is studied numerically using Mathematica 5.1. Periodic, doubly-periodic and chaotic solutions and the routes to chaos via both frequency-locking and period-doubling are found by the Poincar\'e plot of the first mode v1v_1. The circle map on the torus is well approximated by the summation of several sinusoidal functions. The dependence of the rotation number on the viscosity parameter is in accordance with that of the sine-circle map. The complicated bifurcation structure and the revival of a stable periodic solution at the smaller viscosity parameter in the present model indicates that the turbulent state may be very sensitive to the Reynolds number.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures submitted to JPS

    Vulnerable Narcissism and Problematic Social Networking Sites Use: Focusing the Lens on Specific Motivations for Social Networking Sites Use

    Research highlighted that Problematic Social Networking Sites Use (PSNSU) and vulnerable narcissism are associated. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are still unclear. The present study aimed to test the mediating role of motives for social networking sites (SNSs) use between vulnerable narcissism and five symptoms of PSNSU (i.e., preference for online social interactions, mood regulation, cognitive preoccupation, compulsive use, and negative outcomes) in a sole model. Self-report questionnaires were completed by 344 SNSs users in the age range of 18–30 years (76.5% females; mean age = 23.80 years, standard deviation = 2.30 years). Vulnerable narcissism, three motives to use SNSs (coping, conformity, enhancement), and symptoms of PSNSU were assessed. Structural equation modeling was used to test for mediation. The results indicate that both motives with positive (i.e., enhancement) and negative (i.e., coping and conformity) valence partially mediated the association between vulnerable narcissism and different symptoms of PSNSU. We conclude that individuals with vulnerable narcissism may develop PSNSU not only as a compensatory strategy to cope with psychosocial difficulties but also as a result of a gratification-seeking process

    Primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a reliable procedure with reproducible long-term results. Nevertheless, there are conditions related to the type of patient or local conditions of the knee that can make it a difficult procedure. The most common scenarios that make it difficult are discussed in this review. These include patients with many previous operations and incisions, and those with severe coronal deformities, genu recurvatum, a stiff knee, extra-articular deformities and those who have previously undergone osteotomy around the knee and those with chronic dislocation of the patella. Each condition is analysed according to the characteristics of the patient, the pre-operative planning and the reported outcomes. When approaching the difficult primary TKA surgeons should use a systematic approach, which begins with the review of the existing literature for each specific clinical situation.
