Nanomechanical morphology of amorphous, transition, and crystalline domains in phase change memory thin films
In the search for phase change materials (PCM) that may rival traditional
random access memory, a complete understanding of the amorphous to crystalline
phase transition is required. For the well-known Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and GeTe (GT)
chalcogenides, which display nucleation and growth dominated crystallization
kinetics, respectively, this work explores the nanomechanical morphology of
amorphous and crystalline phases in 50 nm thin films. Subjecting these PCM
specimens to a lateral thermal gradient spanning the crystallization
temperature allows for a detailed morphological investigation. Surface and
depth-dependent analyses of the resulting amorphous, transition and crystalline
regions are achieved with shallow angle cross-sections, uniquely implemented
with beam exit Ar ion polishing. To resolve the distinct phases, ultrasonic
force microscopy (UFM) with simultaneous topography is implemented revealing a
relative stiffness contrast between the amorphous and crystalline phases of 14%
for the free film surface and 20% for the cross-sectioned surface. Nucleation
is observed to occur preferentially at the PCM-substrate and free film
interface for both GST and GT, while fine subsurface structures are found to be
sputtering direction dependent. Combining surface and cross-section
nanomechanical mapping in this manner allows 3D analysis of microstructure and
defects with nanoscale lateral and depth resolution, applicable to a wide range
of materials characterization studies where the detection of subtle variations
in elastic modulus or stiffness are required

A Direct Reduction from k-Player to 2-Player Approximate Nash Equilibrium
We present a direct reduction from k-player games to 2-player games that
preserves approximate Nash equilibrium. Previously, the computational
equivalence of computing approximate Nash equilibrium in k-player and 2-player
games was established via an indirect reduction. This included a sequence of
works defining the complexity class PPAD, identifying complete problems for
this class, showing that computing approximate Nash equilibrium for k-player
games is in PPAD, and reducing a PPAD-complete problem to computing approximate
Nash equilibrium for 2-player games. Our direct reduction makes no use of the
concept of PPAD, thus eliminating some of the difficulties involved in
following the known indirect reduction.Comment: 21 page
Phase diagram of the metal-insulator transition in 2D electronic systems
We investigated the interdependence of the effects of disorder and carrier
correlations on the metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional electronic
systems. We present a quantitative metal-insulator phase diagram. Depending on
the carrier density we find two different types of metal-insulator transition -
a continuous localization for rs=<8 and a discontinuous transition at higher
rs. The critical level of disorder at the transition decreases with decreasing
carrier density. At very low carrier densities we find that the system is
always insulating. The value of the conductivity at the transition is
consistent with recent experimental measurements. The self-consistent method
which we have developed includes the effects of both disorder and correlations
on the transition, using a density relaxation theory with the Coulomb

Complementary DNAs for the Îł subunit of the calcium channel of rabbit skeletal muscle were isolated on the basis of peptide sequences derived from the purified protein. The deduced primary structure is without homology to other known protein sequences and is consistent with the Îł subunit being an integral membrane protein
Armenia and Belarus: caught between the EU's and Russia's conditionalities?
This article looks into Armenia's and Belarus’ engagement with the European Union's (EU) and Russia's conditionalities, the two EU Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries that are also members of the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). While paying attention to political, economic (including energy and technical) as well as security dimensions of the EU's and Russia's approaches, as proposed in the present special section, the article demonstrates that the conditionalities extended by the EU and Russia to the two countries in question have differed. In their turn, Armenia and Belarus have reacted differently to Russia's and the EU's conditionalities. Against the backdrop of the changing significance ascribed to both the EU's and Russia's policies towards their common neighbourhood since the 1990s, the present contribution identifies and analyses factors that account for the diverging positions of Armenia and Belarus, including the type of regime, the geopolitical considerations, the stakes in the economic and energy spheres and the predisposition to integration. The article shows that in the resulting complex context, Armenia and Belarus have been able to influence the shape and content of the EU's and Russia's conditionalities, although in a different way and to a different extent.Ministry of Education and Science (UID/CPO/ 00758/2013
Metrology For Advanced Manufacturing – The Networking Project AdvManuNet
Advanced Manufacturing is a branch of manufacturing that is considered an important driver for future economic and societal progress. The European Commission (EC) has identified Advanced Manufacturing as one of six Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) with applications across multiple industrial sectors. The networking project JNP19Net01 AdvManuNet funded by EURAMET for four years starting in June 2020 aims to accelerate the process of establishing a European Metrology Network (EMN) to strengthen Europe’s position in Advanced Manufacturing. The consortium to deliver this project comprises National Metrological Institutes (PTB, NPL, INRIM, RISE, CMI, METAS, TUBITAK, GUM), Designated Institutes (BAM), University partners (Politecnico di Torino) and the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen) from across Europe
