Differentiating human versus non-human bone by exploring the nutrient foramen: implications for forensic anthropology

In some instances, only small fragments of bone may be present. In this study, a non-destructive novel technique is presented to distinguish between human and non-human long bones. This technique is based on the macroscopic and computed tomography (CT) analysis of nutrient foramina. The nutrient foramen of long bone diaphyses transmits the nutrient artery which provides much of the oxygen and nutrients to the bone. The nutrient foramen and its canal were analysed in six femora and humeri of human, sheep (Ovies aries) and pig (Sus scrofa) species. The location, position and direction of the nutrient foramina were measured macroscopically. The length of the canal, angle of the canal, circumference and area of the entrance of the foramen were measured from CT images. Macroscopic analysis revealed the femora nutrient foramina are more proximal, whereas humeri foramina are more distal. The human bones and sheep humerus conform to the perceived directionality, but the pig bones and sheep femur do not. Amongst the parameters measured in the CT analysis, the angle of the canal had a discriminatory power. This study shows the potential of this technique to be used independently or complementary to other methods in distinguishing between human and non-human bone in forensic anthropology

Interpretable classification of Alzheimer's disease pathologies with a convolutional neural network pipeline.
Neuropathologists assess vast brain areas to identify diverse and subtly-differentiated morphologies. Standard semi-quantitative scoring approaches, however, are coarse-grained and lack precise neuroanatomic localization. We report a proof-of-concept deep learning pipeline that identifies specific neuropathologies-amyloid plaques and cerebral amyloid angiopathy-in immunohistochemically-stained archival slides. Using automated segmentation of stained objects and a cloud-based interface, we annotate > 70,000 plaque candidates from 43 whole slide images (WSIs) to train and evaluate convolutional neural networks. Networks achieve strong plaque classification on a 10-WSI hold-out set (0.993 and 0.743 areas under the receiver operating characteristic and precision recall curve, respectively). Prediction confidence maps visualize morphology distributions at high resolution. Resulting network-derived amyloid beta (Aβ)-burden scores correlate well with established semi-quantitative scores on a 30-WSI blinded hold-out. Finally, saliency mapping demonstrates that networks learn patterns agreeing with accepted pathologic features. For a Migrant Art: Samuel Beckett and Cultural Nationalism
This essay charts Samuel Beckett’s linguistic migration from English to French at the end of the Second World War, locating this within the context of other twentieth-century literary migrations. It then proceeds to identify some of the principal ways in which Beckett seeks to resist forms of cultural nationalism (Irish, French and German). The distance that Beckett takes from these European forms of cultural nationalism is reflected not only in the migrant status of his characters, but also in the way in which he deploys national-cultural references. The essay argues that Beckett’s aim in this respect bears comparison with that of the ‘good European’ as defined by Nietzsche. An important difference, however, is that in Beckett’s case the emphasis falls not upon cosmopolitanism but rather upon a perpetual migrancy that is captured above all in his movement between languages
Human mummification practices among the Ibaloy of Kabayan, North Luzon, the Philippines
The province of Benguet, situated in North Luzon, the Philippines, holds a large number of ancient mummified remains, mostly located within the municipality of Kabayan. Such bodies are mainly associated to the Ibaloy – one of the indigenous groups collectively known as Igorot – and are stored in natural rockshelters or caves carved into the stone, inside wooden coffins often obtained from hollowed pine tree segments. Recent inspections of some of these corpses, carried out in 2002 and 2012, indicated the nature of their mummification process as well as some details regarding their bioanthropological features. Although very little information was initially available on these bodies, the authors have gathered significant oral information on funerary rituals and attitudes towards the ancestors via interviews with the local elders, as well as data on the vegetal materials employed and the practice of tattooing. This paper is the first critical evaluation of these mummies and demonstrates the uniqueness and preciousness of this biocultural heritage now in danger
Longitudinal development of initial, chronic and mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in young children with cystic fibrosis
BACKGROUND:
While the emergence of chronic and mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) infection are both associated with poorer outcomes among CF patients, their relationship is poorly understood. We examined the longitudinal relationship of incident, chronic and mucoid Pa in a contemporary, young CF cohort in the current era of Pa eradication therapy.
METHODS:
This retrospective cohort was comprised of patients in the U.S. CF Foundation Patient Registry born 2006-2015, diagnosed before age 2, and with at least 3 respiratory cultures annually. Incidence and age-specific prevalence of Pa infection stages (initial and chronic [≥ 3Pa+cultures in prior year]) and of mucoid Pa were summarized. Transition times and the interaction between Pa stage and acquisition of mucoid Pa were examined via Cox models.
RESULTS:
Among the 5592 CF patients in the cohort followed to a mean age of 5.5years, 64% (n=3580) acquired Pa. Of those, 13% (n=455) developed chronic Pa and 17% (n=594) cultured mucoid Pa. Among those with mucoid Pa, 36% (211/594) had it on their first recorded Pa+culture, while mucoid Pa emerged at or after entering the chronic stage in 12% (73/594). Mucoidy was associated with significantly increased risk of transition to chronic Pa infection (HR=2.59, 95% CI 2.11, 3.19).
CONCLUSIONS:
Two-thirds of early-diagnosed young children with CF acquired Pa during a median 5.6years of follow up, among whom 13% developed chronic Pa and 17% acquired mucoid Pa. Contrary to our hypothesis, 87% of young children who developed mucoid Pa did so before becoming chronically infected
Ahrensite, γ-Fe_2SiO_4, a new shock-metamorphic mineral from the Tissint meteorite: Implications for the Tissint shock event on Mars
Ahrensite (IMA 2013-028), γ-Fe_2SiO_4, is the natural Fe-analog of the silicate-spinel ringwoodite (γ-Mg_2SiO_4). It occurs in the Tissint Martian meteorite, where it forms through the transformation of the fayalite-rich rims of olivine megacrysts or Fe-rich microphenocrysts in contact with shock melt pockets. The typical sequence of phase assemblages traversing across a Tissint melt pocket into olivine is: quenched melt or fayalite-pigeonite intergrowth ⇒ bridgmanite + wüstite ⇒ ahrensite and/or ringwoodite ⇒ highly-deformed olivine + nanocrystalline ringwoodite ⇒ deformed olivine. We report the first comprehensive set of crystallographic, spectroscopic, and quantitative chemical analysis of type ahrensite, and show that concentrations of ferric iron and inversion in the type material of this newly approved mineral are negligible. We also report the occurrence of nanocrystalline ringwoodite in strained olivine and establish correlations between grain size and distance from melt pockets. The ahrensite and ringwoodite crystals show no preferred orientation, consistent with random nucleation and incoherent growth within a highly strained matrix of olivine. Grain sizes of ahrensite immediately adjacent to melt pockets are consistent with growth during a shock of moderate duration (1–10 ms)
Tissintite, (Ca,Na,â–¡)AlSi_2O_6: A Shock-Induced Clinopyroxene in the Tissint Meteorite
During a nanomineralogy investigation of the Tissint Martian meteorite, we discovered the new shock-induced mineral tissintite, (Ca,Na,â–¡)AlSi_2O_6, which is named after Tissint, Morocco, where the host meteorite fell. This phase provides new insights into shock conditions and impact processes on Mars. Study design considerations for the Standardized Treatment of Pulmonary Exacerbations 2 (STOP2): A trial to compare intravenous antibiotic treatment durations in CF
BACKGROUND:
Pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) in cystic fibrosis (CF) are common and contribute to morbidity and mortality. Duration of IV antibiotic therapy to treat PEx varies widely in the US, and there are few data to guide treatment decisions.
METHODS:
We combined a survey of CF stakeholders with retrospective analyses of a recent observational study of CF PEx to design a multicenter, randomized, prospective study comparing the efficacy and safety of different durations of IV antibiotics for PEx to meet the needs of people with CF and their caregivers.
RESULTS:
IV antibiotic duration was cited as the most important PEx research question by responding CF physicians and top concern among surveyed CF patients/caregivers. During PEx, forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1% predicted) and symptom responses at 7-10days of IV antibiotics identified two distinct groups: early robust responders (ERR) who subsequently experienced greater FEV1 improvements compared to non-ERR (NERR). In addition to greater FEV1 and symptom responses, only 14% of ERR patients were treated with IV antibiotics for >15days, compared with 45% of NERR patients.
CONCLUSIONS:
A divergent trial design that evaluates subjects' interim improvement in FEV1 and symptoms to tailor randomization to IV treatment duration (10 vs. 14days for ERR, 14 vs. 21days for NERR) may alleviate physician and patient concerns about excess or inadequate treatment. Such a study has the potential to provide evidence necessary to standardize IV antibiotic duration in CF PEx care -a first step to conducting PEx research of other treatment features
