    Oral health awareness and care preferences in patients with diabetes : a qualitative study

    Background People with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of oral health problems; however, oral health is currently not included in structured diabetes reviews and education in the UK. Aim and Objectives This study explores the patient experience related to oral health and diabetes, especially in relation to: • Awareness of the link between oral health and diabetes and oral self care needs • Interaction with health professionals in dental and general practice • Preferences for receiving oral health information and education Methods This nested qualitative study involved semi-structured telephone interviews with a purposive sample of 20 participants from a questionnaire study on oral health awareness in patients with diabetes. Interview transcripts were analysed using a thematic framework approach. Results Participants were mostly unaware of the link between oral health and diabetes. Those that had been made aware by a health professional were not given concrete self care advice. Interactions with dental professionals were often limited to informing the dental practice of their diagnosis and current medication. Most participants were in favour of dentists screening for diabetes, but as their general practice was the hub for diabetes care, they felt GPs or nurses should provide oral health information and discuss oral health with patients. Conclusions Written information regarding diabetes and its possible effects on oral health needs to be more readily available to people with diabetes, especially at diagnosis. There may be a place for introducing a structured oral health question in routine diabetes reviews

    Automated Reasoning and Presentation Support for Formalizing Mathematics in Mizar

    This paper presents a combination of several automated reasoning and proof presentation tools with the Mizar system for formalization of mathematics. The combination forms an online service called MizAR, similar to the SystemOnTPTP service for first-order automated reasoning. The main differences to SystemOnTPTP are the use of the Mizar language that is oriented towards human mathematicians (rather than the pure first-order logic used in SystemOnTPTP), and setting the service in the context of the large Mizar Mathematical Library of previous theorems,definitions, and proofs (rather than the isolated problems that are solved in SystemOnTPTP). These differences poses new challenges and new opportunities for automated reasoning and for proof presentation tools. This paper describes the overall structure of MizAR, and presents the automated reasoning systems and proof presentation tools that are combined to make MizAR a useful mathematical service.Comment: To appear in 10th International Conference on.     User interface design for mobile-based sexual health interventions for young people: Design recommendations from a qualitative study on an online Chlamydia clinical care pathway

    Background: The increasing pervasiveness of mobile technologies has given potential to transform healthcare by facilitating clinical management using software applications. These technologies may provide valuable tools in sexual health care and potentially overcome existing practical and cultural barriers to routine testing for sexually transmitted infections. In order to inform the design of a mobile health application for STIs that supports self-testing and self-management by linking diagnosis with online care pathways, we aimed to identify the dimensions and range of preferences for user interface design features among young people. Methods: Nine focus group discussions were conducted (n=49) with two age-stratified samples (16 to 18 and 19 to 24 year olds) of young people from Further Education colleges and Higher Education establishments. Discussions explored young people's views with regard to: the software interface; the presentation of information; and the ordering of interaction steps. Discussions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Four over-arching themes emerged: privacy and security; credibility; user journey support; and the task-technology-context fit. From these themes, 20 user interface design recommendations for mobile health applications are proposed. For participants, although privacy was a major concern, security was not perceived as a major potential barrier as participants were generally unaware of potential security threats and inherently trusted new technology. Customisation also emerged as a key design preference to increase attractiveness and acceptability. Conclusions: Considerable effort should be focused on designing healthcare applications from the patient's perspective to maximise acceptability. The design recommendations proposed in this paper provide a valuable point of reference for the health design community to inform development of mobile-based health interventions for the diagnosis and treatment of a number of other conditions for this target group, while stimulating conversation across multidisciplinary communities

    Numerical Investigation of Monopole Chains

    We present numerical results for chains of SU(2) BPS monopoles constructed from Nahm data. The long chain limit reveals an asymmetric behavior transverse to the periodic direction, with the asymmetry becoming more pronounced at shorter separations. This analysis is motivated by a search for semiclassical finite temperature instantons in the 3D SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model, but it appears that in the periodic limit the instanton chains either have logarithmically divergent action or wash themselves out.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures; v2 minor changes, published versio

    Caffeinated energy drinks and effects in UK young people

    International systematic review evidence indicates an association of caffeinated energy drink use with physical symptoms and lifestyle but is unclear about associations with mental health and behavioural outcomes. The design of studies included in the reviews and the quality of the systematic reviews themselves limits the strength of the conclusions. The lack of UK research in the reviews prompted our analysis of UK population-level data. Our analysis of UK data suggests that many children in the UK consume CEDs with higher consumption reported by older children, by boys, and by those living in northern areas or in more deprived regions. Findings also suggest associations between consumption and physical, psychological, social and educational symptoms, behaviours and wellbeing. A lack of studies that measure these variables over time meant we were unable to determine whether CED consumption is the cause of associated symptoms, behaviours and wellbeing. Future research on this topic should employ longitudinal methods to examine whether CED consumption is responsible for poorer health and wellbeing. Research should also examine the influence of geographic region and deprivation on children’s caffeinated energy drink consumption. The measurement of caffeinated energy drink consumption in the future needs to be consistent across surveys, so that a clearer picture of the frequency, timing and dosage can be established. UK-wide exploration of the context and reasons for caffeinated energy drink consumption is needed and should include examining consumption of CEDs with alcohol in older children aged 16 to 17 years

    Adhesive-based tendon-to-bone repair: failure modelling and materials selection.

    Surgical reattachment of tendon to bone is a procedure marked by high failure rates. For example, nearly all rotator cuff repairs performed on elderly patients with massive tears ultimately result in recurrence of tearing. These high failure rates have been attributed to stress concentrations that arise due to the mechanical mismatch between tendon and bone. Although recent studies have identified potential adhesives with mechanical properties tuned to alleviate these stress concentrations, and thereby delay the onset of failure, resistance to the progression of failure has not been studied. Here, we refined the space of adhesive material properties that can improve surgical attachment by considering the fracture process. Using cohesive zone modelling and physiologically relevant values of mode I and mode II adhesive fracture toughnesses, we predicted the maximum displacement and strength at failure of idealized, adhesively bonded tendon-to-bone repairs. Repair failure occurred due to excessive relative displacement of the tendon and bone tissues for strong and compliant adhesives. The failure mechanism shifted to rupture of the entire repair for stiffer adhesives below a critical shear strength. Results identified a narrow range of materials on an Ashby chart that are suitable for adhesive repair of tendon to bone, including a range of elastomers and porous solids.EPSR

    Fermions, Skyrmions and the 3-Sphere

    This paper investigates a background charge one Skyrme field chirally coupled to light fermions on the 3-sphere. The Dirac equation for the system commutes with a generalised angular momentum or grand spin. It can be solved explicitly for a Skyrme configuration given by the hedgehog form. The energy spectrum and degeneracies are derived for all values of the grand spin. Solutions for non-zero grand spin are each characterised by a set of four polynomials.     Boundary Conditions on Internal Three-Body Wave Functions

    For a three-body system, a quantum wave function Ψm\Psi^\ell_m with definite \ell and mm quantum numbers may be expressed in terms of an internal wave function χk\chi^\ell_k which is a function of three internal coordinates. This article provides necessary and sufficient constraints on χk\chi^\ell_k to ensure that the external wave function Ψm\Psi^\ell_m is analytic. These constraints effectively amount to boundary conditions on χk\chi^\ell_k and its derivatives at the boundary of the internal space. Such conditions find similarities in the (planar) two-body problem where the wave function (to lowest order) has the form rmr^{|m|} at the origin. We expect the boundary conditions to prove useful for constructing singularity free three-body basis sets for the case of nonvanishing angular momentum.Comment: 41 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
