Association and path coefficient analysis among yield attributes and berry yield in black pepper (Piper nigrum L.)
Eighty two germplasm accessions of black pepper aggregated from pepper cultivating tracts of Karnataka, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra were characterized for 17 quantitative traits as per the IPGRI descriptors during 2018-19 at the field gene bank of ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Experimental Farm, Kozhikode. Wide range and high coefficient of variation (CV) were recorded for dry berry weight, fresh berry weight and number of spikes vine-1 whereas, lower CV was observed for berry size. Fresh berry weight showed significant positive correlation with dry berry weight followed by number of spikes vine-1 whereas, number of immature berries spike-1 and berry size showed significant negative association with setting percentage. High positive direct effect of fresh berry weight on dry berry weight was observed during path analysis. Both fresh rachis weight and number of spike vine-1 had indirect positive effects on dry berry weight through fresh berry weight. Residual effect was meagre suggesting that the 17 quantitative traits explained 99% variability. Traits like number of spikes vine-1 and fresh berry weight are the important traits that need to be augmented during improvement of black pepper for yield
Numerical Strip-Yield Calculation of CTOD and CTOA
A recently developed numerical method based on the strip yield analysis approach was used to calculate the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) and Crack Tip Opening Angle (CTOA) for a number of complex crack configurations of practical interest. This method is an adaptation of the dislocation-density based boundary element method. In this Boundary Element approach, crack-face opening displacements are obtained at any point on a crack using a series of definite integrals evaluated exactly in closed form for a variety of crack geometries, including infinite or finite extent, with arbitrarily applied loading conditions
Investigational synthetic neuroactive steroid zuranolone in treatment of major depressive disorder with peripartum onset
Major depressive disorder with peripartum onset or peripartum depression is a common condition experienced by a large proportion of women and to some extent even in men. The current treatment strategies involve the use of conventional pharmacotherapeutic classes of drugs like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and psychotherapy methods in the management of this condition. In this article, we try to review and evaluate the pathophysiology of the condition along with the safety and efficacy of the novel investigational therapeutic drug zuranolone, which is a synthetic neuroactive steroid (NAS) that has shown promise in clinical trials for the management of conditions like major depressive disorder, peripartum depression and bipolar disorder. The synthetic NAS zuranolone is an orally bioavailable positive allosteric modulator of the gamma amino butyric acid (GABAA) receptor, which can regulate the action of the GABAergic pathway implicated in many depressive episodes and also affect the normal functioning of the hypothalmo pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which is the core pathophysiological cause behind major depressive disorder with peripartum onset
Fuzzy Knowledge Based System for Suitability of Soils in Airfield Applications
Proper design of roads and airfield pavements requires an in-depth soil properties evaluation to determine suitability of soil. Soft computing is used to model soil classification system's dynamic behaviour and its properties. Soft computing is based on methods of machine learning, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks, expert systems, genetic algorithms. Fuzzy system is a strong method for mimicking human thought and solves question of confusion. This paper proposes a new decision-making approach for soil suitability in airfield applications without a need to perform any manual works like use of tables or chart. A fuzzy knowledge - based approach is built to rate soil suitability in qualitative terms for airfield application. The proposed model describes a new technique by defining fuzzy descriptors using triangular functions considering the index properties of soils as input parameters and fuzzy rules are generated using fuzzy operators to classify soil and rate its suitability for airfield applications. The data obtained from the results of the laboratory test are validated with the results of the fuzzy knowledge-based system indicating the applicability of the Fuzzy model created. The approach developed in this work is more skilled to other prevailing optimization models. Due to its system’s flexibility, it can be suitably customized and applied to laboratory test data available, thus delivering a wide range for any geotechnical engineer. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091643 Full Text: PD
A study on patients treated with interlock nailing in the forearm fracture bones
Background: Fractures involving the bones of the forearm present unique problems not encountered with fractures of other long bones and may significantly affect the function of the upper limb. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the functional outcome of patients treated with interlock nailing in the fracture forearm bones. Methods: Thirty two patients included after their consent. With the patient supine on a radiolucent table, and under general or regional anesthesia the extremity was prepared and the surgery was performed using a standard procedure. If secure rigid fixation is achieved forearm POP splint is applied and kept in place for 2 weeks, thereafter a removable sugar-tong orthosis is worn until bridging callus is present, and the orthosis is removed frequently for exercise. Results: The average age of the patients was 38.90 years. The major mode of injury was RTA (59.09%) followed by assault (36.36%). 41% of patients were operated within week of injury, only three patients were operated after a week and one patient after 3 weeks. More than half of patients had closed fractures and rest was open fractures, of which Gustilo Anderson type II were in majority. In 3/5 of patients locking at nondriving end was not done cause of stable fixation. There was statistically significant difference in the surgical time (P <0.05) and duration of postoperative immobilization differed statistically significantly (P <0.001) between the group of patients in whom locking was done and not done. Conclusions: Advantages of Interlocking nail are high rate of bony consolidation along with minimized surgical approaches, cosmetically better suited and little risk of refracture after removal of the implant
Functional outcome after autologous blood injection for tennis elbow
Background: Tennis elbow is one of most common conditions found in athletes involved in upper limb sports. It has been reported that local injection of autologous blood in tennis elbow offers significant benefit by providing the necessary cellular and humoral mediators to induce a healing cascade. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of autologous blood injection in the treatment of tennis elbow. Methods: 30 consecutive patients involved in upper limb sports and suffering from tennis elbow for more than 3 months duration not responsive to oral medication or other non-invasive treatment were given local injection of 2 ml autologous blood. Patients were assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and Nirschl scores before giving injection and at 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks also at 6 and 9 months, repeat injection was given at 8 weeks if pain persisted. Results: After Autologous blood injection (ABI) at 4 weeks there is significant (P <0.001) decrease in VAS pain score and Nirschl score. Though VAS pain score and Nirschl stage continued to improve after 8 weeks, but statistically not significant. Conclusions: Autologous blood injection significantly improved clinical function and pain scores in patients with chronic tennis elbow who had previously undergone unsuccessful non-invasive treatment.
Polymer Coated Polymeric (PCP) microneedles for sampling of drugs and biomarkers from tissues
The Polymer Coated Polymeric (PCP) microneedles were fabricated using PVP K30 in the core and ethyl cellulose in the coating. The PCP microneedles do not disintegrate in the tissue upon insertion and rather stays intact and allows diffusion of drugs and analytes across the membrane both inward and outward. In this project the potential use of PCP microneedles for sampling analytes from the dermal tissue was explored. The amount of analyte sampled depended on the concentration in the tissue, physicochemical properties of the analyte and duration of insertion of the array in the tissue. Further, an advanced type of PCP microneedle array was fabricated by entrapping absorbent beads in the core microneedles. The adsorbent enabled the PCP microneedles to recover significantly higher amount of analyte from the tissue
Road traffic accidents attending casualty in a tertiary care hospital : a 03 year study from South Western India
Background: Road Traffic Accident (RTA) is any vehicular accident occurring on the roadway i.e. originating on, terminating on, or involving a vehicle partially on the roadway. Road traffic accidents are a human tragedy which has an immeasurable impact on the families affected. The WHO estimates that over 1.2 million people pass away every year on the world’s roads, and between 20 and 50 million fall victims to non-fatal injuries. The incidence of RTA remains poorly measured in India. Methods: The present study is conducted at casualty department of a tertiary care hospital in South Western India among victims of road traffic accident. This cross sectional study was conducted to elucidate the role of various factors involved in road traffic accidents and to study demographic profile and injury pattern among RTA victims. All the reported RTA cases from 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2018 were included in the study. Results: A total of 875 cases of RTA were studied. There were 83.77%(n=733) male and 16.23%(n=142) female accident victims. Most of the patients were aged between 21 and 30 years. Monsoons witnessed 46.63%(n=408) cases. Most cases occurred between 6 and 12pm (54.4%, n=476). Commonest injury was a simple injury (72.91%, n=638), dangerous injuries (27.09% percent, n=237) and dead was (7.43%, n=65). The highest number of accidents took place in the month of June (19.09%, n=167) and on Sundays (22.17%). Among the motorized vehicles, two-wheeler drivers were more (76.91%, n=673) involved in accidents. In this study 17.60% (n=154) were under influence of alcohol while driving. Conclusions: This study shows there are multiple factors associated with road traffic accidents. Most of the factors responsible for RTA and its fatal consequences are preventable. India, as a signatory to the Brasilia declaration, intends to reduce road accidents and traffic fatalities by 50% by 2022. A comprehensive multipronged approach can mitigate most of them
Development of the NASA/FLAGRO computer program for analysis of airframe structures
The NASA/FLAGRO (NASGRO) computer program was developed for fracture control analysis of space hardware and is currently the standard computer code in NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the European Agency (ESA) for this purpose. The significant attributes of the NASGRO program are the numerous crack case solutions, the large materials file, the improved growth rate equation based on crack closure theory, and the user-friendly promptive input features. In support of the National Aging Aircraft Research Program (NAARP); NASGRO is being further developed to provide advanced state-of-the-art capability for damage tolerance and crack growth analysis of aircraft structural problems, including mechanical systems and engines. The project currently involves a cooperative development effort by NASA, FAA, and ESA. The primary tasks underway are the incorporation of advanced methodology for crack growth rate retardation resulting from spectrum loading and improved analysis for determining crack instability. Also, the current weight function solutions in NASGRO or nonlinear stress gradient problems are being extended to more crack cases, and the 2-d boundary integral routine for stress analysis and stress-intensity factor solutions is being extended to 3-d problems. Lastly, effort is underway to enhance the program to operate on personal computers and work stations in a Windows environment. Because of the increasing and already wide usage of NASGRO, the code offers an excellent mechanism for technology transfer for new fatigue and fracture mechanics capabilities developed within NAARP
Co-ingestion of black tea reduces the indispensable amino acid digestibility of hens’ egg in Indian adults
Background: Tea, a commonly consumed beverage, contains high amounts of polyphenols that can impair protein
digestibility, as demonstrated in vitro. There are no human studies examining the inhibitory influence of tea polyphenols
(TPP) on high-quality protein digestibility.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of black tea on the true indispensable amino acid (IAA)
digestibility of whole boiled egg protein, in healthy adult humans, through use of a dual isotope tracer approach.
Methods: The effect of black TPP (4.6 mg/mL, ingested as a beverage with the meal) on 2H-labeled whole boiled egg
protein, administered with ghee rice and tomato curry, was measured with reference to 13C-spirulina protein in healthy
Indian adults aged 20–27 y of both sexes with BMI of 22.0 ± 2.8 kg/m2. The results were then compared to previously
determined whole egg mean IAA digestibility measured by the same method, without black tea, in the same subjects
(n = 5). To correct for any independent effect of TPP on spirulina protein (used as a standard protein), the true IAA
digestibility of 13C-spirulina protein was independently measured with reference to a 2H-amino acid mixture, with and
without co-ingestion of black tea, in 3 of the same subjects.
Results: The true IAA digestibility of whole boiled egg protein significantly decreased by 17% when co-ingested with
black tea. However, there was no significant reduction in the true IAA digestibility of spirulina protein when co-ingested
with black tea.
Conclusions: TPP protein interactions reduced whole egg digestibility in healthy Indian adults but had minimal effect
on spirulina protein digestibility. In populations who are at risk of dietary quality protein inadequacy, the consumption of
tea during or after a meal can further increase the risk of inadequacy. This trial was registered at Clinical Trials Registry
of India (http://ctri.nic.in) as CTRI/2018/03/012265
