    Radio Polarization of the Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar PSR J1119-6127

    We have investigated the radio polarization properties of PSR J1119-6127, a recently discovered young radio pulsar with a large magnetic field. Using pulsar-gated radio imaging data taken at a center frequency of 2496 MHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have determined a rotation measure for the pulsar of +842 +/- 23 rad m^-2. These data, combined with archival polarimetry data taken at a center frequency of 1366 MHz with the Parkes telescope, were used to determine the polarization characteristics of PSR J1119-6127 at both frequencies. The pulsar has a fractional linear polarization of ~75% and ~55% at 1366 and 2496 MHz, respectively, and the profile consists of a single, wide component. This pulse morphology and high degree of linear polarization are in agreement with previously noticed trends for young pulsars (e.g., PSR J1513-5908). A rotating-vector (RV) model fit of the position angle (PA) of linear polarization over pulse phase using the Parkes data suggests that the radio emission comes from the leading edge of a conal beam. We discuss PSR J1119-6127 in the context of a recent theoretical model of pulsar spin-down which can in principle be tested with polarization and timing data from this pulsar. Geometric constraints from the RV fit are currently insufficient to test this model with statistical significance, but additional data may allow such a test in the future.Comment: 9 pages, including 6 figures and 1 table.     Fluid-Induced Propulsion of Rigid Particles in Wormlike Micellar Solutions

    In the absence of inertia, a reciprocal swimmer achieves no net motion in a viscous Newtonian fluid. Here, we investigate the ability of a reciprocally actuated particle to translate through a complex fluid that possesses a network using tracking methods and birefringence imaging. A geometrically polar particle, a rod with a bead on one end, is reciprocally rotated using magnetic fields. The particle is immersed in a wormlike micellar (WLM) solution that is known to be susceptible to the formation of shear bands and other localized structures due to shear-induced remodeling of its microstructure. Results show that the nonlinearities present in this WLM solution break time-reversal symmetry under certain conditions, and enable propulsion of an artificial "swimmer." We find three regimes dependent on the Deborah number (De): net motion towards the bead-end of the particle at low De, net motion towards the rod-end of the particle at intermediate De, and no appreciable propulsion at high De. At low De, where the particle time-scale is longer then the fluid relaxation time, we believe that propulsion is caused by an imbalance in the fluid first normal stress differences between the two ends of the particle (bead and rod). At De~1, however, we observe the emergence of a region of network anisotropy near the rod using birefringence imaging. This anisotropy suggests alignment of the micellar network, which is "locked in" due to the shorter time-scale of the particle relative to the fluid

    Decrease of CA 19–9 during chemotherapy with gemcitabine predicts survival time in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer

    Chemotherapy with gemcitabine has been shown to be an effective regimen in advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer with improvement of both quality of life and survival time. The response of the tumour marker CA 19–9 to chemotherapy with gemcitabine was studied in order to find out whether it is related to survival time of patients. Forty-three consecutive patients (median age 61 years, range 39–76 years; 20 males, 23 females) suffering from histologically proven locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma and a baseline Karnofsky-index ≥ 60 were treated with gemcitabine in a dose of 1000 mg m−2weekly × 7 followed by 1 week of rest during the first cycle and thereafter 1000 mg m−2weekly × 3 followed by 1 week of rest until progression. In 36 of 43 patients serial measurements of CA 19–9 could be performed. Patients with a decrease of > 20% of the baseline CA 19–9 level after 8 weeks of treatment (n = 25) had a significantly better median survival than patients with a rise or a decrease ≤ 20% (n = 11) (268 vs 110 days;P< 0.001). The response of CA 19–9 was the strongest independent predictor of survival (P< 0.001) in the multivariate analysis. In conclusion, a decrease of CA 19–9 > 20% during the first weeks of chemotherapy with gemcitabine is associated with a better survival of patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer. Serial measurements of CA 19–9 are useful to decide whether further chemotherapy after the first weeks of treatment is indicated. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    The magnetic moment of 11^{11}Be was measured by detecting nuclear magnetic resonance signals in a beryllium crystal lattice. The experimental technique applied to a 11^{11}Be+^+ ion beam from a laser ion source includes in-beam optical polarization, implantation into a metallic single crystal and observation of rf resonances in the asymmetric angular distribution of the β\beta-decay (β\beta-NMR). The nuclear magnetic moment μ(11Be)=−1.6816(8) μN\mu(^{11}{\rm Be}) = -1.6816(8)\,\mu_N provides a stringent test for theoretical models describing the structure of the 1/2+^+ neutron halo state

    Bacillus anthracis diversity in Kruger National Park [South Africa]

    The Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, has a recorded history of periodic anthrax epidemics causing widespread disease among wild animals. Bacillus anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax, a disease primarily affecting ungulate herbivores. Worldwide there is little diversity among B. anthracis isolates, but examination of variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) loci has identified six major clones, with the most dissimilar types split into the A and B branches. Both the A and B types are found in southern Africa, giving this region the greatest genetic diversity of B. anthracis worldwide. Consequently, southern Africa has been hypothesized to be the geographic origin of B. anthracis. In this study, the genotypic types of 98 KNP B. anthracis isolates were identified using multiple-locus VNTR analysis. Two major types are evident, the A branch and the B branch. The spatial and temporal distribution of the different genotypes indicates that anthrax epidemic foci are independent, though correlated through environmental cues. Kruger B isolates were found on significantly higher-calcium and higher-pH soils than were Kruger type A. This relationship between genotype and soil chemistry may be due to adaptive differences among divergent anthrax strains. While this association may be simply fortuitous, adaptation of A types to diverse environmental conditions is consistent with their greater geographic dispersal and genetic dissimilarity

    Quantifying Stock Price Response to Demand Fluctuations

    We address the question of how stock prices respond to changes in demand. We quantify the relations between price change GG over a time interval Δt\Delta t and two different measures of demand fluctuations: (a) Φ\Phi, defined as the difference between the number of buyer-initiated and seller-initiated trades, and (b) Ω\Omega, defined as the difference in number of shares traded in buyer and seller initiated trades. We find that the conditional expectations <G>Ω<G >_{\Omega} and Φ_{\Phi} of price change for a given Ω\Omega or Φ\Phi are both concave. We find that large price fluctuations occur when demand is very small --- a fact which is reminiscent of large fluctuations that occur at critical points in spin systems, where the divergent nature of the response function leads to large fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages (multicol fomat, revtex

    Harmonic lattice behavior of two-dimensional colloidal crystals

    Using positional data from video-microscopy and applying the equipartition theorem for harmonic Hamiltonians, we determine the wave-vector-dependent normal mode spring constants of a two-dimensional colloidal model crystal and compare the measured band-structure to predictions of the harmonic lattice theory. We find good agreement for both the transversal and the longitudinal mode.     Crystal nuclei and structural correlations in two-dimensional colloidal mixtures: experiment versus simulation

    We examine binary mixtures of superparamagnetic colloidal particles confined to a two-dimensional water-air interface both by real-space experiments and Monte-Carlo computer simulations at high coupling strength. In the simulations, the interaction is modelled as a pairwise dipole-dipole repulsion. While the ratio of magnetic dipole moments is fixed, the interaction strength governed by the external magnetic field and the relative composition is varied. Excellent agreement between simulation and experiment is found for the partial pair distribution functions including the fine structure of the neighbour shells at high coupling. Furthermore local crystal nuclei in the melt are identified by bond-orientational order parameters and their contribution to the pair structure is discussed

    Generating Dashboards Using Fine-Grained Components: A Case Study for a PhD Programme

    Developing dashboards is a complex domain, especially when several stakeholders are involved; while some users could demand certain indicators, other users could demand specific visualizations or design features. Creating individual dashboards for each potential need would consume several resources and time, being an unfeasible approach. Also, user requirements must be thoroughly analyzed to understand their goals regarding the data to be explored, and other characteristics that could affect their user experience. All these necessities ask for a paradigm to foster reusability not only at development level but also at knowledge level. Some methodologies, like the Software Product Line paradigm, leverage domain knowledge and apply it to create a series of assets that can be composed, parameterized, or combined to obtain fully functional systems. This work presents an application of the SPL paradigm to the domain of information dashboards, with the goal of reducing their development time and increasing their effectiveness and user experience. Different dashboard configurations have been suggested to test the proposed approach in the context of the Education in the Knowledge Society PhD programme of the University of Salamanca

    A quasi-experimental study to mobilize rural low-income communities to assess and improve the ecological environment to prevent childhood obesity

Bmc Public Health, 16, 7. doi:10.1186/s12889-016-3047-4Background: The Ecological Model of Childhood Overweight focuses on characteristics that could affect a child's weight status in relation to the multiple environments surrounding that child. A community coaching approach allows community groups to identify their own strengths, priorities and identity. Little to no research currently exists related to community-based efforts inclusive of community coaching in creating environmental change to prevent childhood obesity particularly in rural communities. Methods: A quasi-experimental study will be conducted with low-income, rural communities (n = 14) in the North Central region of the United States to mobilize capacity in communities to create and sustain an environment of healthy eating and physical activity to prevent childhood obesity. Two rural communities within seven Midwestern states (IN, KS, MI, OH, ND, SD, WI) will be randomly assigned to serve as an intervention or comparison community. Coalitions will complete assessments of their communities, choose from evidence-based approaches, and implement nutrition and physical activity interventions each year to prevent childhood obesity with emphasis on policy, system or environmental changes over four years. Only intervention coalitions will receive community coaching from a trained coach. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, annually and project end using previously validated instruments and include coalition self-assessments, parental perceptions regarding the built environment, community, neighborhood, and early childhood environments, self-reflections from coaches and project staff, ripple effect mapping with coalitions and, final interviews of key stakeholders and coaches. A mixed-methods analysis approach will be used to evaluate if Community Coaching enhances community capacity to create and sustain an environment to support healthy eating and physical activity for young children. ANOVA or corresponding non-parametric tests will be used to analyze quantitative data relating to environmental change with significance set at P < .05. Dominant emergent themes from the qualitative data will be weaved together with quantitative data to develop a theoretical model representing how communities were impacted by the project. Discussion: This project will yield data and best practices that could become a model for community development based approaches to preventing childhood obesity in rural communities
