Invariance: a Theoretical Approach for Coding Sets of Words Modulo Literal (Anti)Morphisms

Let AA be a finite or countable alphabet and let θ\theta be literal (anti)morphism onto AA^* (by definition, such a correspondence is determinated by a permutation of the alphabet). This paper deals with sets which are invariant under θ\theta (θ\theta-invariant for short). We establish an extension of the famous defect theorem. Moreover, we prove that for the so-called thin θ\theta-invariant codes, maximality and completeness are two equivalent notions. We prove that a similar property holds in the framework of some special families of θ\theta-invariant codes such as prefix (bifix) codes, codes with a finite deciphering delay, uniformly synchronized codes and circular codes. For a special class of involutive antimorphisms, we prove that any regular θ\theta-invariant code may be embedded into a complete one.Comment: To appear in Acts of WORDS 201

    Gauge invariant MSSM inflaton

We argue that all the necessary ingredients for successful inflation are present in the flat directions of the Minimally Supersymmetric Standard Model. We show that out of many gauge invariant combinations of squarks, sleptons and Higgses, there are two directions, LLe{\bf LLe}, and udd{\bf udd}, which are promising candidates for the inflaton. The model predicts more than 10310^3 e-foldings with an inflationary scale of HinfO(110)H_{\rm inf}\sim {\cal O}(1-10) GeV, provides a tilted spectrum with an amplitude of δH105\delta_H\sim 10^{-5} and a negligible tensor perturbation. The temperature of the thermalized plasma could be as low as TrhO(110)T_{rh}\sim {\cal O}(1-10)~TeV. Parts of the inflaton potential can be determined independently of cosmology by future particle physics experiments.Comment: 4 revtex pages, some references added, stabilization of moduli and supergravity effects are discusse

Symmetry Plays a Key Role in the Erasing of Patterned Surface Features

We report on how the relaxation of patterns prepared on a thin film can be controlled by manipu- lating the symmetry of the initial shape. The validity of a lubrication theory for the capillary-driven relaxation of surface profiles is verified by atomic force microscopy measurements, performed on films that were patterned using focused laser spike annealing. In particular, we observe that the shape of the surface profile at late times is entirely determined by the initial symmetry of the perturba- tion, in agreement with the theory. Moreover, in this regime the perturbation amplitude relaxes as a power-law in time, with an exponent that is also related to the initial symmetry. The results have relevance in the dynamical control of topographic perturbations for nanolithography and high density memory storage

Two-Sided Derivatives for Regular Expressions and for Hairpin Expressions

The aim of this paper is to design the polynomial construction of a finite recognizer for hairpin completions of regular languages. This is achieved by considering completions as new expression operators and by applying derivation techniques to the associated extended expressions called hairpin expressions. More precisely, we extend partial derivation of regular expressions to two-sided partial derivation of hairpin expressions and we show how to deduce a recognizer for a hairpin expression from its two-sided derived term automaton, providing an alternative proof of the fact that hairpin completions of regular languages are linear context-free.Comment: 28 page
