Similar glassy features in the NMR response of pure and disordered La1.88Sr0.12CuO4
High Tc superconductivity in La2-xSrxCuO4 coexists with (striped and glassy)
magnetic order. Here, we report NMR measurements of the 139La spin-lattice
relaxation, which displays a stretched-exponential time dependence, in both
pure and disordered x=0.12 single crystals. An analysis in terms of a
distribution of relaxation rates T1^-1 indicates that i) the spin-freezing
temperature is spatially inhomogeneous with an onset at Tg(onset)=20 K for the
pristine samples, and ii) the width of the T1^-1 distribution in the vicinity
of Tg(onset) is insensitive to an ~1% level of atomic disorder in CuO2 planes.
This suggests that the stretched-exponential 139La relaxation, considered as a
manifestation of the systems glassiness, may not arise from quenched disorder.Comment: 7 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Absence of static phase separation in the high-Tc cuprate
We use 89Y NMR in in order to evaluate with high
sensitivity the distribution of hole content p in the CuO2 planes. For y=1 and
y=0.6, this hole doping distribution is found narrow with a full width at half
maximum smaller than Delta p=0.025. This rules out any large static phase
separation between underdoped and optimally doped regions in contrast with the
one observed by STM in Bi2212 and by NQR in LaSrCuO. This establishes that

Multi-variate analyses of flood loss in Can Tho city, Mekong delta
Floods in the Mekong delta are recurring events and cause substantial losses to the economy. Sea level rise and increasing precipitation during the wet season result in more frequent floods. For effective flood risk management, reliable losses and risk analyses are necessary. However, knowledge about damaging processes and robust assessments of flood losses in the Mekong delta are scarce. In order to fill this gap, we identify and quantify the effects of the most important variables determining flood losses in Can Tho city through multi-variate statistical analyses. Our analysis is limited to the losses of residential buildings and contents. Results reveal that under the specific flooding characteristics in the Mekong delta with relatively well-adapted households, long inundation durations and shallow water depths, inundation duration is more important than water depth for the resulting loss. However, also building and content values, floor space of buildings and building quality are important loss-determining variables. Human activities like undertaking precautionary measures also influence flood losses. The results are important for improving flood loss modelling and, consequently, flood risk assessments in the Mekong delta
Comprehensive framework for human health risk assessment of nanopesticides
Nanopesticides are not only in an advanced state of research and development but have started to appear on the market. Industry and regulatory agencies need a consolidated and comprehensive framework and guidance for human health risk assessments. In this perspective we develop such a comprehensive framework by exploring two case studies from relevant product types: an active ingredient delivered with a nanocarrier system, and a nanoparticle as an active ingredient. For a nanocarrier system, three entities are tracked during the assessment: the nanocarrier–active ingredient complex, the empty nanocarrier remaining after the complete release of the active ingredient, and the released active ingredient. For the nanoparticle of pure active ingredient, only two entities are relevant: the nanoparticle and the released ions. We suggest important adaptations of the existing pesticide framework to determine the relevant nanopesticide entities and their concentrations for toxicity testing. Depending on the nature of the nanopesticides, additional data requirements, such as those pertaining to durability in biological media and potential for crossing biological barriers, have also been identified. Overall, our framework suggests a tiered approach for human health risk assessment, which is applicable for a range of nanopesticide products to support regulators and industry in making informed decisions on nanopesticide submissions. Brief summaries of suitable methods including references to existing standards (if available) have been included together with an analysis of current knowledge gaps. Our study is an important step towards a harmonized approach accepted by regulatory agencies for assessing nanopesticides
Phase Separation and the Phase Diagram in Cuprates Superconductors
We show that the main features of the cuprates superconductors phase diagram
can be derived considering the disorder as a key property of these materials.
Our basic point is that the high pseudogap line is an onset of phase separation
which generates compounds made up of regions with distinct doping levels. We
calculate how this continuous temperature dependent phase separation process
occurs in high critical temperature superconductors (HTSC) using the
Cahn-Hilliard approach, originally applied to study alloys. Since the level of
phase separation varies for different cuprates, it is possible that different
systems with average doping level pm exhibit different degrees of charge and
spin segregation. Calculations on inhomogeneous charge distributions in form of
stripes in finite clusters performed by the Bogoliubov-deGennes superconducting
approach yield good agreement to the pseudogap temperature T*(pm), the onset of
local pairing amplitudes with phase locked and concomitantly, how they develop
at low temperatures into the superconducting phase at Tc(pm) by percolation.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points
We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of
Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear
system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative
integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n
lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12
lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the

A reduced subduction graph and higher multiplicity in S_n transformation coefficients
Transformation coefficients between {\it standard} bases for irreducible
representations of the symmetric group and {\it split} bases adapted to
the subgroup () are
considered. We first provide a \emph{selection rule} and an \emph{identity
rule} for the subduction coefficients which allow to decrease the number of
unknowns and equations arising from the linear method by Pan and Chen. Then,
using the {\it reduced subduction graph} approach, we may look at higher
multiplicity instances. As a significant example, an orthonormalized solution
for the first multiplicity-three case, which occurs in the decomposition of the
irreducible representation of into

Planar Cu and O hole densities in high-Tc cuprates determined with NMR
The electric hyperfine interaction observable in atomic spectroscopy for O
and Cu ions in various configurations is used to analyze the quadrupole
splitting of O and Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in La2-xSrxCuO4 and
YBa2Cu3O6+y and to determine the hole densities at both sites as a function of
doping. It is found that in La2-xSrxCuO4 all doped holes (x) reside in the Cu-O
plane but almost exclusively at O. For YBa2Cu3O6+y and y<0.6 doped holes are
found at planar Cu as well as O. For y>0.6 further doping increases the hole
content only for planar O. The phase diagram based on NMR data is presented.
Further implications from the Cu A and B site in La2-xSrxCuO4 and the two
planar O sites in YBa2Cu3O6+y and consequences for the phase diagram are

A variational approach to strongly damped wave equations
We discuss a Hilbert space method that allows to prove analytical
well-posedness of a class of linear strongly damped wave equations. The main
technical tool is a perturbation lemma for sesquilinear forms, which seems to
be new. In most common linear cases we can furthermore apply a recent result
due to Crouzeix--Haase, thus extending several known results and obtaining
