Active current sheets and hot flow anomalies in Mercury's bow shock
Hot flow anomalies (HFAs) represent a subset of solar wind discontinuities
interacting with collisionless bow shocks. They are typically formed when the
normal component of motional (convective) electric field points toward the
embedded current sheet on at least one of its sides. The core region of an HFA
contains hot and highly deflected ion flows and rather low and turbulent
magnetic field. In this paper, we report first observations of HFA-like events
at Mercury identified over a course of two planetary years. Using data from the
orbital phase of the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and
Ranging (MESSENGER) mission, we identify a representative ensemble of active
current sheets magnetically connected to Mercury's bow shock. We show that some
of these events exhibit unambiguous magnetic and particle signatures of HFAs
similar to those observed earlier at other planets, and present their key
physical characteristics. Our analysis suggests that Mercury's bow shock does
not only mediate the flow of supersonic solar wind plasma but also provides
conditions for local particle acceleration and heating as predicted by previous
numerical simulations. Together with earlier observations of HFA activity at
Earth, Venus and Saturn, our results confirm that hot flow anomalies are a
common property of planetary bow shocks, and show that the characteristic size
of these events is of the order of one planetary radius.Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
Mathematical Models for Estimating the Risk of vCJD Transmission
We present two different simple models for vCJD transmission by blood transfusion. Both models indicate that transfusions alone are unlikely to cause more than a few infections, unless the number of primary cases increases.
To improve our models, future work should pursue data collection, empirical estimation of the model parameters, and examination of the underlying assumptions of our frameworks.
Further improvements could also include examining susceptibility to vCJD infection by age group and iatrogenic infections introduced through surgical instruments. Regarding the latter, it may be worthwhile to conduct experiments to quantify the transmission of prions from an infected surgical instrument after repeated sterilization procedures
Hidden Symmetry of Higher Dimensional Kerr-NUT-AdS Spacetimes
It is well known that 4-dimensional Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetime possesses the
hidden symmetry associated with the Killing-Yano tensor. This tensor is
"universal" in the sense that there exist coordinates where it does not depend
on any of the free parameters of the metric. Recently the general higher
dimensional Kerr-NUT-AdS solutions of the Einstein equations were obtained. We
demonstrate that all these metrics with arbitrary rotation and NUT parameters
admit a universal Killing-Yano tensor. We give an explicit presentation of the

The Chevreton Tensor and Einstein-Maxwell Spacetimes Conformal to Einstein Spaces
In this paper we characterize the source-free Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes
which have a trace-free Chevreton tensor. We show that this is equivalent to
the Chevreton tensor being of pure-radiation type and that it restricts the
spacetimes to Petrov types \textbf{N} or \textbf{O}. We prove that the trace of
the Chevreton tensor is related to the Bach tensor and use this to find all
Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes with a zero cosmological constant that have a
vanishing Bach tensor. Among these spacetimes we then look for those which are
conformal to Einstein spaces. We find that the electromagnetic field and the
Weyl tensor must be aligned, and in the case that the electromagnetic field is
null, the spacetime must be conformally Ricci-flat and all such solutions are
known. In the non-null case, since the general solution is not known on closed
form, we settle with giving the integrability conditions in the general case,
but we do give new explicit examples of Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes that are
conformal to Einstein spaces, and we also find examples where the vanishing of
the Bach tensor does not imply that the spacetime is conformal to a -space.

Resistance and the "Post-Recognition" Turn in Organizations
I will draw on the contributions of Courpasson (2016) and Hardy (in press) to reflect on the nature of resistance in contemporary organizations and extend the discussion by focusing on why and how actors might resist today. In particular, I propose that some types of resistance are motivated by what I label post-recognition politics rather than traditional struggles to be recognized, heard, and listened to. Hence the prominent theme of exit, escape, and social independence in emancipatory discourses designed to refuse work and employment today
Ultrarelativistic black hole in an external electromagnetic field and gravitational waves in the Melvin universe
We investigate the ultrarelativistic boost of a Schwarzschild black hole
immersed in an external electromagnetic field, described by an exact solution
of the Einstein-Maxwell equations found by Ernst (the ``Schwarzschild-Melvin''
metric). Following the classical method of Aichelburg and Sexl, the
gravitational field generated by a black hole moving ``with the speed of
light'' and the transformed electromagnetic field are determined. The
corresponding exact solution describes an impulsive gravitational wave
propagating in the static, cylindrically symmetric, electrovac universe of
Melvin, and for a vanishing electromagnetic field it reduces to the well known
Aichelburg-Sexl pp-wave. In the boosting process, the original Petrov type I of
the Schwarzschild-Melvin solution simplifies to the type II on the impulse, and
to the type D elsewhere. The geometry of the wave front is studied, in
particular its non-constant Gauss curvature. In addition, a more general class
of impulsive waves in the Melvin universe is constructed by means of a
six-dimensional embedding formalism adapted to the background. A coordinate
system is also presented in which all the impulsive metrics take a continuous
form. Finally, it is shown that these solutions are a limiting case of a family
of exact gravitational waves with an arbitrary profile. This family is
identified with a solution previously found by Garfinkle and Melvin. We thus
complement their analysis, in particular demonstrating that such spacetimes are

Counter and Complicit Masculine Discourse Among Men’s Shed Members
Men’s Sheds is a growing international movement aimed at providing men with places and activities that facilitate social connectedness. Despite Men’s Sheds’ focus on males, little attention has been paid to masculinities within the specific context of these settings. The current study used a gender relations framework to explore the ways in which attendees discussed Men’s Sheds, with particular attention to discussions that were complicit and counter to traditional, hegemonic views of masculinity, and diverse positions in between these binaries. The data consisted of transcripts and field notes from four focus groups comprised of mostly older, White, retired male members of a Canadian shed (N = 22). The analysis revealed three overall themes: (1) focus on work, (2) independence, and (3) need for male-focused spaces. These themes and associated subthemes suggest that shed members ascribe to dominant masculine values and ideals, but also support more fluid and flexible views of masculinity. Implications are discussed for how working with an array of masculinities within the Men’s Sheds movement will be helpful with respect to their future growth in Canada and internationally
Killing Tensors and Conformal Killing Tensors from Conformal Killing Vectors
Koutras has proposed some methods to construct reducible proper conformal
Killing tensors and Killing tensors (which are, in general, irreducible) when a
pair of orthogonal conformal Killing vectors exist in a given space. We give
the completely general result demonstrating that this severe restriction of
orthogonality is unnecessary. In addition we correct and extend some results
concerning Killing tensors constructed from a single conformal Killing vector.
A number of examples demonstrate how it is possible to construct a much larger
class of reducible proper conformal Killing tensors and Killing tensors than
permitted by the Koutras algorithms. In particular, by showing that all
conformal Killing tensors are reducible in conformally flat spaces, we have a
method of constructing all conformal Killing tensors (including all the Killing
tensors which will in general be irreducible) of conformally flat spaces using

A Geometric Formulation of Quantum Stress Fields
We present a derivation of the stress field for an interacting quantum system
within the framework of local density functional theory. The formulation is
geometric in nature and exploits the relationship between the strain tensor
field and Riemannian metric tensor field. Within this formulation, we
demonstrate that the stress field is unique up to a single ambiguous parameter.
The ambiguity is due to the non-unique dependence of the kinetic energy on the
metric tensor. To illustrate this formalism, we compute the pressure field for
two phases of solid molecular hydrogen. Furthermore, we demonstrate that
qualitative results obtained by interpreting the hydrogen pressure field are
