    The Croatian Health Survey – SF-36: I. General Quality of Life Assessment

    The objective of the Croatian Health Survey was the assessment of population health related quality of life in the transitional enviroment of Croatia. Health status measures incorporate dimensions such as physical, psychological, and social functioning, role performance and perception of wellbeing. In order to assess health status, »The medical outcome study 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) model« was used. A total sample of 5048 inhabitants (1983 males and 3065 females), 18 years and over, represents approximately 1‰ of the general population of Croatia. Mean scores were as follows: physical functioning (PF) 69.94, role-physical (RP)63.01, bodily pain (BP) 64.51, general health (GH) 53.40, vitality (VT) 51.85, social functioning (SF) 72.96, role-emotional (RE) 72.42, mental health (MH) 61.71 and health transition (HT) 44.79. Results of the SF-36 health survey in Croatia are very much like the results in other European countries with indication that general quality of life is lower in Croatia

    Tool path pattern and feed direction selection in robotic milling for increased chatter-free material removal rate

    Robotic milling becomes increasingly relevant to large-scale part manufacturing industries thanks to its cost-effective and portable manufacturing concept compared to large-scale CNC machine tools. Integration of milling processes with industrial robots is proposed to be well aligned with the aims and objective of the recent fourth industrial revolution. However, the industrial robots introduce position-dependent and asymmetrical dynamic flexibility, which may reflect to the tool tip dynamics under several conditions. Under such circumstances, the stability limits become dependent on the machining location and the feed direction. In this respect, selection of machining tool path patterns is crucial for increased chatter-free material removal rates (MRR). This paper proposes an approach to evaluate and select tool path patterns, offered by the existing CAM packages, for increased chatter-free MRR. The machining area is divided into number of machining locations. The optimal feed direction is decided based on the absolute stability at each region considering the asymmetrical and position-dependent tool tip dynamics. Then, the alternative tool path patterns are evaluated and the corresponding optimum feed direction is decided for increased chatter-free material removal. The application of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulations and representative experiments

    Immunological and respiratory reactions in workers exposed to organic aerosols

    Prikazane su vrijednosti kožnih reakcija i imunoglobulina IgE u odnosu na kronične respiratorne simptome i ventilacijski kapacitet radnika izloženih različitim organskim aerosolima i radnika kontrolne skupine. U izloženih radnika utvrđena je viša prevalencija pozitivnih kožnih testova na profesionalne alergene nego u radnika kontrolne skupine, osim za one na preradi soje. U radnika s pozitivnim kožnim testovima na profesionalne alergene utvrđena je veća prevalencija gotovo svih kroničnih respiratornih simptoma premda razlike nisu uvijek bile statistički značajne. Radnici s pozitivnim kožnim reakcijama pokazivali su uglavnom značajno veću prevalenciju povišenog IgF nego oni s negativnim kožnim reakcijama. U izloženih radnika utvrđene su relativne srednje akutne redukcije ventilacijskog kapaciteta koje su se kretale za FVC od 1,7 do 13,3%, za FEV1 od 0,4 do 21,9%, za FEF50 od 13 do 16,1% i za FEF25 od 0 od 24,9%. Međutim nije dobivena korelacija između akutnih i kroničnih plućnih promjena s kožnom reaktivnosti ili IgE vrijednostima. Naši rezultati, premda izloženost organskim aerosolima može uzrokovati imunološke reakcije, upućuju na to da takve promjene nisu posljedica alergijske reakcije. Na osnovi pozitivnih kožnih reakcija i koncentracija IgE u serumu ne možemo sa sigurnošću utvrditi osjetljive radnike u kojih postoji vjerojatnost za razvoj respiratornih poremećaja.The relationship of skin reactivity and IgE serum level to the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms and ventilatory capacity in workers exposed to different organic aerosols and in control workers is presented. In general, the exposed workers had a higher prevalence of positive skin tests to occupational allergens than the controls, with the exception of soy-bean workers. The workers with positive skin tests to occupational allergens had a higher prevalence of almost all chronic respiratory symptoms although the differences did not always reach statistical significance. Among workers with positive skin reactions the prevalence of increased IgE serum level was significantly higher than among those with negative skin reactions. There were large mean relative acute across-shift reductions of ventilatory capacity in all groups of exposed workers, varying for FVC from 1.7 to 13.3%, for FEV1, from 0.4 to 21.9%, for FEF50 from 1.5 to 16.1% and for FEF25 from 0 to 24.9%. However, there was no correlation of acute and chronic lung function changes with skin reactivity or IgE serum level. Our data suggest that although exposure to organic aerosols may cause immunological reactions, it appears that such changes are not caused by allergic mechanisms. On the basis of positive skin reactivity or IgE serum level the workers who are prone to the development of chronic respiratory impairment cannot be predicted with certainty

    A microsatellite marker for yellow rust resistance in wheat

    Bulk segregant analysis (BSA) was used to identify molecular markers associated with yellow rust disease resistance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). DNAs isolated from the selected yellow rust tolerant and susceptible F-2 individuals derived from a cross between yellow rust resistant and susceptible wheat genotypes were used to established a "tolerant" and a "susceptible" DNA pool. The BSA was then performed on these DNA pools using 230 markers that were previously mapped onto the individual wheat chromosomes. One of the SSR markers (Xgwm382) located on chromosome group 2 (A, B, D genomes) was present in the resistant parent and the resistant bulk but not in the susceptible parent and the susceptible bulk, suggesting that this marker is linked to a yellow rust resistance gene. The presence of Xgwm382 was also tested in 108 additional wheat genotypes differing in yellow rust resistance. This analysis showed that 81% of the wheat genotypes known to be yellow rust resistant had the Xgwm382 marker, further suggesting that the presence of this marker correlates with yellow rust resistance in diverse wheat germplasm. Therefore, Xgwm382 could be useful for marker assisted selection of yellow rust resistances genotypes in wheat breeding programs

    Unique and conserved MicroRNAs in wheat chromosome 5D revealed by next-generation sequencing

    MicroRNAs are a class of short, non-coding, single-stranded RNAs that act as post-transcriptional regulators in gene expression. miRNA analysis of Triticum aestivum chromosome 5D was performed on 454 GS FLX Titanium sequences of flow sorted chromosome 5D with a total of 3,208,630 good quality reads representing 1.34x and 1.61x coverage of the short (5DS) and long (5DL) arms of the chromosome respectively. In silico and structural analyses revealed a total of 55 miRNAs; 48 and 42 miRNAs were found to be present on 5DL and 5DS respectively, of which 35 were common to both chromosome arms, while 13 miRNAs were specific to 5DL and 7 miRNAs were specific to 5DS. In total, 14 of the predicted miRNAs were identified in wheat for the first time. Representation (the copy number of each miRNA) was also found to be higher in 5DL (1,949) compared to 5DS (1,191). Targets were predicted for each miRNA, while expression analysis gave evidence of expression for 6 out of 55 miRNAs. Occurrences of the same miRNAs were also found in Brachypodium distachyon and Oryza sativa genome sequences to identify syntenic miRNA coding sequences. Based on this analysis, two other miRNAs: miR1133 and miR167 were detected in B. distachyon syntenic region of wheat 5DS. Five of the predicted miRNA coding regions (miR6220, miR5070, miR169, miR5085, miR2118) were experimentally verified to be located to the 5D chromosome and three of them : miR2118, miR169 and miR5085, were shown to be 5D specific. Furthermore miR2118 was shown to be expressed in Chinese Spring adult leaves. miRNA genes identified in this study will expand our understanding of gene regulation in bread wheat

    Transcriptome pathways unique to dehydration tolerant relatives of modern wheat

    Among abiotic stressors, drought is a major factor responsible for dramatic yield loss in agriculture. In order to reveal differences in global expression profiles of drought tolerant and sensitive wild emmer wheat genotypes, a previously deployed shock-like dehydration process was utilized to compare transcriptomes at two time points in root and leaf tissues using the Affymetrix GeneChip(R) Wheat Genome Array hybridization. The comparison of transcriptomes reveal several unique genes or expression patterns such as differential usage of IP(3)-dependent signal transduction pathways, ethylene- and abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent signaling, and preferential or faster induction of ABA-dependent transcription factors by the tolerant genotype that distinguish contrasting genotypes indicative of distinctive stress response pathways. The data also show that wild emmer wheat is capable of engaging known drought stress responsive mechanisms. The global comparison of transcriptomes in the absence of and after dehydration underlined the gene networks especially in root tissues that may have been lost in the selection processes generating modern bread wheats

    Quantitative trait loci conferring grain mineral nutrient concentrations in durum wheat 3 wild emmer wheat RIL population

    Mineral nutrient malnutrition, and particularly deficiency in zinc and iron, afflicts over 3 billion people worldwide. Wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, genepool harbors a rich allelic repertoire for mineral nutrients in the grain. The genetic and physiological basis of grain protein, micronutrients (zinc, iron, copper and manganese) and macronutrients (calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and sulfur) concentration was studied in tetraploid wheat population of 152 recombinant inbred lines (RILs), derived from a cross between durum wheat (cv. Langdon) and wild emmer (accession G18-16). Wide genetic variation was found among the RILs for all grain minerals, with considerable transgressive effect. A total of 82 QTLs were mapped for 10 minerals with LOD score range of 3.2–16.7. Most QTLs were in favor of the wild allele (50 QTLs). Fourteen pairs of QTLs for the same trait were mapped to seemingly homoeologous positions, reflecting synteny between the A and B genomes. Significant positive correlation was found between grain protein concentration (GPC), Zn, Fe and Cu, which was supported by significant overlap between the respective QTLs, suggesting common physiological and/or genetic factors controlling the concentrations of these mineral nutrients. Few genomic regions (chromosomes 2A, 5A, 6B and 7A) were found to harbor clusters of QTLs for GPC and other nutrients.     Vinegar production from fruit concentrates: effect on volatile composition and antioxidant activity

    Vinegar stands as a highly appreciated fermented food product due to several functional properties and multiple applications. This work focuses on vinegar production from fruit wines derived from fruit concentrates, to attain a food product with nutritional added value. Four fruit vinegars (orange, mango, cherry and banana), were produced and characterized, with total acidities of 5.3 ± 0.3% for orange, 5.6 ± 0.2% for mango, 4.9 ± 0.4% for cherry and 5.4 ± 0.4% for banana. Acetification showed impact on aroma volatiles, mainly related to oxidative reactions. Minor volatiles associated with varietal aroma were identified, monoterpenic alcohols in orange vinegar, esters in banana vinegar, C13-norisoprenoids in cherry vinegar and lactones in mango vinegar, indicating fruit vinegars differentiated sensory quality. Total antioxidant activity analysis by FRAP, revealed fruit vinegars potential to preserve and deliver fruit functional properties. Antioxidant activity of fruit vinegars, expressed as equivalents of Fe2SO4, was of 11.0 ± 1.67 mmol L1 for orange, 4.8 ± 0.5 mmol L1 for mango, 18.6 ± 2.33 mmol L1 for cherry and 3.7 ± 0.3 mmol L1 for banana.     Comparison of serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid sialic acid levels between malignant and benign lung diseases

    BACKGROUND: It is known that tissue and serum sialic acid levels may be altered by malignant transformation. In this study, sialic acid levels were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) and serum in two groups of patients with lung cancer and non-malignant diseases of the lung. METHODS: Colorimetric methods were used for determination sialic acid in serum and in BAL samples. Flexible bronchoscopy was used to obtain the latter. RESULTS: Sialic acid levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum did not show any statistically significant difference between subjects with malignant and the non-malignant lung diseases (p > 0.05). Sialic acid levels were also unrelated to the stage and localization of the tumor (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sialic acid levels do not appear to be a good marker for discriminating malignant from non-malignant diseases of the lung
