    On electromagnetics of an isotropic chiral medium moving at constant velocity

    A medium which is an isotropic chiral medium from the perspective of a co-moving observer is a Faraday chiral medium (FCM) from the perspective of a non-co-moving observer. The Tellegen constitutive relations for this FCM are established. By an extension of the Beltrami field concept, these constitutive relations are exploited to show that planewave propagation is characterized by four generally independent wavenumbers. This FCM can support negative phase velocity at certain translational velocities and with certain wavevectors, even though the corresponding isotropic chiral medium does not. The constitutive relations and Beltrami--like fields are also used to develop a convenient spectral representation of the dyadic Green functions for the FCM

    Perturbation Theory for Metastable States of the Dirac Equation with Quadratic Vector Interaction

    The spectral problem of the Dirac equation in an external quadratic vector potential is considered using the methods of the perturbation theory. The problem is singular and the perturbation series is asymptotic, so that the methods for dealing with divergent series must be used. Among these, the Distributional Borel Sum appears to be the most well suited tool to give answers and to describe the spectral properties of the system. A detailed investigation is made in one and in three space dimensions with a central potential. We present numerical results for the Dirac equation in one space dimension: these are obtained by determining the perturbation expansion and using the Pad\'e approximants for calculating the distributional Borel transform. A complete agreement is found with previous non-perturbative results obtained by the numerical solution of the singular boundary value problem and the determination of the density of the states from the continuous spectrum.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Gradient catastrophe and flutter in vortex filament dynamics

    Gradient catastrophe and flutter instability in the motion of vortex filament within the localized induction approximation are analyzed. It is shown that the origin if this phenomenon is in the gradient catastrophe for the dispersionless Da Rios system which describes motion of filament with slow varying curvature and torsion. Geometrically this catastrophe manifests as a rapid oscillation of a filament curve in a point that resembles the flutter of airfoils. Analytically it is the elliptic umbilic singularity in the terminology of the catastrophe theory.     Classification of integrable Weingarten surfaces possessing an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation

    In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic integrals degenerate to elementary functions were known to nineteenth century geometers. Finally, we characterize the associated normal congruences

    In pre-hospital care, an accurate and quick diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is imperative to promptly kick-off the STEMI network with a direct transfer to the cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) in order to reduce myocardial infarction size and mortality. Aa atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the main mechanism responsible for STEMI. However, in a small percentage of patients, emergency coronarography does not reveal any significant coronary stenosis. The fluoropyrimidine agents such as 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and capecitabine, widely used to treat gastrointestinal, breast, head and neck cancers, either as a single agent or in combination with other chemotherapies, can cause potentially lethal cardiac side effects. Here, we present the case of a patient with 5-FU cardiotoxicity resulting in an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with recurrent episodes of chest pain and ST-segment elevation.. Our case report highlights the importance of widening the knowledge among cardiologists of the side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, especially considering the rising number of cancer patients around the world and that fluoropyrimidines are the main treatment for many types of cancer, both in adjuvant and advanced settings

    Impact of Power Outages on Developing Countries: Evidence from Rural Households in Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Nigeria is suffering from the worst energy crisis in its history, resulting in its rural communities being subjected to massive power outages, daily. Energy promotes economic well-being and makes social life worthwhile such that youths are less disposed to violent crimes. This study investigated the consequences of power outages on the social-economic life of rural households in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Primary data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire circulated among unemployed youth, students, housewives, businessmen and professionals in the area. The study focused on the relationship between power outage and its impact on the everyday life of the people. This study adopted a descriptive research design using 1000 randomly selected members of 44 rural households in the areas mostly affected by incessant power outages. It was found that stunted economic growth, reduced leisure time as well as heightened criminality and insecurity are some of the major results of rampant power outages among rural households in the Niger Delta. It is concluded that power outages have severe negative impact on the social and economic lives of the people. The findings from this research would help improve the outlook of rural communities in Nigeria and other developing countries. Keywords: Nigeria, Power outage, Energy, Electricity, Rural households

    Searching for the fastest dynamo: Laminar ABC flows

    The growth rate of the dynamo instability as a function of the magnetic Reynolds number Rm is investigated by means of numerical simulations for the family of the ABC flows and for 2 different forcing scales. For the ABC flows that are driven at the largest available length scale it is found that as the magnetic Reynolds number is increased: (a) The flow that results first in dynamo is the 2.5D flow for which A=B and C=0 (and all permutations). (b) The second type of flow that results in dynamo is the one for which A=B=2C/5 (and permutations). (c) The most symmetric flow A=B=C is the third type of flow that results in dynamo. (d) As Rm is increased, the A=B=C flow stops being a dynamo and transitions from a local maximum to a third-order saddle point. (e) At larger Rm the A=B=C flow re-establishes its self as a dynamo but remains a saddle point. (f) At the largest examined Rm the growth rate of the 2.5D flows starts to decrease, the A=B=C flow comes close to a local maximum again and the flow A=B=2C/5 (and permutations) results in the fastest dynamo with growth rate γ 0.12\gamma~0.12 at the largest examined Rm. For the ABC flows that are driven at the second largest available length scale it is found that (a) the 2.5D flows A=B, C=0 (and permutations) are again the first flows that result in dynamo with a decreased onset. (b) The most symmetric flow A=B=C is the second type of flow that results in dynamo. It is and remains a local maximum. (c) At larger Rm the flow A=B=2C/5 (and permutations) appears as the third type of flow that results in dynamo. As Rm is increased it becomes the flow with the largest growth rate. The growth rates appear to have some correlation with the Lyaponov exponents but constructive re-folding of the field lines appears equally important in determining the fasted dynamo flow

    Differential role of circulating micrornas to track progression and pre-symptomatic stage of chronic heart failure: A pilot study

    (1) Background: Chronic heart failure (CHF) contributes to the overall burden of cardiovascular disease. Early identification of at-risk individuals may facilitate the targeting of precision therapies. Plasma microRNAs are promising circulating biomarkers for their implications with cardiac pathologies. In this pilot study, we investigate the possible exploitability of circulating micro-RNAs (miRNAs) to track chronic heart failure (CHF) occurrence, and progression from NYHA class I to IV. (2) Methods: We screened 367 microRNAs using TaqMan microRNA Arrays in plasma samples from healthy controls (HC) and CHF NYHA-class I-to-IV patients (5/group). Validation was performed by singleplex assays on 10 HC and 61 CHF subjects. Differences in the expression of validated microRNAs were evaluated through analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Associations between N-terminal pro-BNP (NT-proBNP), left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) or peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) and plasma microRNA were assessed by multivariable linear regression analysis. (3) Results: Twelve microRNAs showed higher expression in CHF patients vs. HC. Seven microRNAs were associated with NT-proBNP concentration; of these, miR-423-5p was also an independent predictor of LVEDV. Moreover, miR-499-5p was a predictor of the VO2 peak. Finally, a cluster of 5 miRNAs discriminated New York Heart Association (NYHA) class-I from HC subjects. (4) Conclusions: Our data suggest that circulating miRNAs have the potential to serve as pathophysiology-based markers of HF status and progression, and as indicators of pre-symptomatic individuals
