Geologising urban political ecology (UPE): the urbanisation of sand in Accra, Ghana
This paper makes a call for an urban political ecology (UPE) which engages more extensively with Earth’s geological formations. As a material at the centre of global urbanisation process, sand is offered as a geological entry point. The paper presents an analysis of the urbanisation of sand, or the ways in which sand is brought into the urban realm, grounding this reading in Accra—a growing city on Ghana’s Atlantic coast. Drawing from 14 months of ethnographic fieldwork, the paper charts the socio-natural politics through which sand is first unearthed from the edges of the city—an extractive processes otherwise known as “sand winning” in Ghana. By examining the forms of power which govern uneven revenue flows to communities, the displacement of farming groups, the widespread loss of farmland and a contested regime of governance, the analysis exposes the socio-natural politics through which the city’s geological baseline is first unearthed
Time interval and lattice vibration in Raman effect, photoelectric effect and plane mirror reflection
Time interval between the incident and scattered photon in Raman effect and
absorption of photon and emission of electron in photoelectric effect has not
been determined till now. This is because there is no such high level
instrument discovered till now to detect time interval to such a small level.
But this can be calculated theoretically by applying a basic principle of
physics like impulse is equal to the change in momentum. Considering the
collision between electron and photon as perfect inelastic collision in
photoelectric effect, elastic and inelastic collision in Raman effect and
elastic collision in plane mirror reflection and the interaction between
electron and photon as strong gravitational interaction we calculate the
required time interval. During these phenomena there is lattice vibration which

Associations between vascular risk factor levels and cognitive decline among stroke survivors
Importance Incident stroke is associated with accelerated cognitive decline. Whether poststroke vascular risk factor levels are associated with faster cognitive decline is uncertain.
Objective To evaluate associations of poststroke systolic blood pressure (SBP), glucose, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels with cognitive decline.
Design, Setting, and Participants Individual participant data meta-analysis of 4 US cohort studies (conducted 1971-2019). Linear mixed-effects models estimated changes in cognition after incident stroke. Median (IQR) follow-up was 4.7 (2.6-7.9) years. Analysis began August 2021 and was completed March 2023.
Exposures Time-dependent cumulative mean poststroke SBP, glucose, and LDL cholesterol levels.
Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was change in global cognition. Secondary outcomes were change in executive function and memory. Outcomes were standardized as t scores (mean [SD], 50 [10]); a 1-point difference represents a 0.1-SD difference in cognition.
Results A total of 1120 eligible dementia-free individuals with incident stroke were identified; 982 (87.7%) had available covariate data and 138 (12.3%) were excluded for missing covariate data. Of the 982, 480 (48.9%) were female individuals, and 289 (29.4%) were Black individuals. The median age at incident stroke was 74.6 (IQR, 69.1-79.8; range, 44.1-96.4) years. Cumulative mean poststroke SBP and LDL cholesterol levels were not associated with any cognitive outcome. However, after accounting for cumulative mean poststroke SBP and LDL cholesterol levels, higher cumulative mean poststroke glucose level was associated with faster decline in global cognition (−0.04 points/y faster per each 10–mg/dL increase [95% CI, −0.08 to −0.001 points/y]; P = .046) but not executive function or memory. After restricting to 798 participants with apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) data and controlling for APOE4 and APOE4 × time, higher cumulative mean poststroke glucose level was associated with a faster decline in global cognition in models without and with adjustment for cumulative mean poststroke SBP and LDL cholesterol levels (−0.05 points/y faster per 10–mg/dL increase [95% CI, −0.09 to −0.01 points/y]; P = .01; −0.07 points/y faster per 10–mg/dL increase [95% CI, −0.11 to −0.03 points/y]; P = .002) but not executive function or memory declines.
Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study, higher poststroke glucose levels were associated with faster global cognitive decline. We found no evidence that poststroke LDL cholesterol and SBP levels were associated with cognitive decline
An All-Sky Search for Three Flavors of Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory
We present the results and methodology of a search for neutrinos produced in
the decay of charged pions created in interactions between protons and
gamma-rays during the prompt emission of 807 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over the
entire sky. This three-year search is the first in IceCube for shower-like
Cherenkov light patterns from electron, muon, and tau neutrinos correlated with
GRBs. We detect five low-significance events correlated with five GRBs. These
events are consistent with the background expectation from atmospheric muons
and neutrinos. The results of this search in combination with those of
IceCube's four years of searches for track-like Cherenkov light patterns from
muon neutrinos correlated with Northern-Hemisphere GRBs produce limits that
tightly constrain current models of neutrino and ultra high energy cosmic ray

The search for transient astrophysical neutrino emission with IceCube-DeepCore
We present the results of a search for astrophysical sources of brief transient neutrino emission using IceCube and DeepCore data acquired between 2012 May 15 and 2013 April 30. While the search methods employed in this analysis are similar to those used in previous IceCube point source searches, the data set being examined consists of a sample of predominantly sub-TeV muon-neutrinos from the Northern Sky (-5 degrees < delta < 90 degrees) obtained through a novel event selection method. This search represents a first attempt by IceCube to identify astrophysical neutrino sources in this relatively unexplored energy range. The reconstructed direction and time of arrival of neutrino events are used to search for any significant self-correlation in the data set. The data revealed no significant source of transient neutrino emission. This result has been used to construct limits at timescales ranging from roughly 1 s to 10 days for generic soft-spectra transients. We also present limits on a specific model of neutrino emission from soft jets in core-collapse supernovae
Search for Dark Matter Annihilation in the Galactic Center with IceCube-79
The Milky Way is expected to be embedded in a halo of dark matter particles,
with the highest density in the central region, and decreasing density with the
halo-centric radius. Dark matter might be indirectly detectable at Earth
through a flux of stable particles generated in dark matter annihilations and
peaked in the direction of the Galactic Center. We present a search for an
excess flux of muon (anti-) neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the
Galactic Center using the cubic-kilometer-sized IceCube neutrino detector at
the South Pole. There, the Galactic Center is always seen above the horizon.
Thus, new and dedicated veto techniques against atmospheric muons are required
to make the southern hemisphere accessible for IceCube. We used 319.7 live-days
of data from IceCube operating in its 79-string configuration during 2010 and
2011. No neutrino excess was found and the final result is compatible with the
background. We present upper limits on the self-annihilation cross-section,
\left, for WIMP masses ranging from 30 GeV up to
10 TeV, assuming cuspy (NFW) and flat-cored (Burkert) dark matter halo
profiles, reaching down to cm s, and
cm s for the

Improved limits on dark matter annihilation in the Sun with the 79-string IceCube detector and implications for supersymmetry
We present an improved event-level likelihood formalism for including
neutrino telescope data in global fits to new physics. We derive limits on
spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering by employing the new formalism in
a re-analysis of data from the 79-string IceCube search for dark matter
annihilation in the Sun, including explicit energy information for each event.
The new analysis excludes a number of models in the weak-scale minimal
supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) for the first time. This work is
accompanied by the public release of the 79-string IceCube data, as well as an
associated computer code for applying the new likelihood to arbitrary dark
