Current potential and limitations of immunolabeling in cereal grain research

    Get PDF
lmmunolabeling techniques have made a valuable contribution to cereal grain research during the past decade in terms of precise localization of specific compounds. While these techniques have several limitations, such as the availability and specificity of the antibodies, immunolabeling has proven especially useful in cereal studies seeking a better understanding of grain development and characterization. According to the literature reviewed in this paper, immunolabeling techniques will continue to be a useful tool in the characterization and localization of cereal grain components

ABSTRACT: Persimmon fruit is an important source of phenolic compounds, dietary fiber and carotenoids, whose bioavailability is directly connected with processing. Samples from persimmon fruit cv. "Rojo Brillante" from two different ripening stages, with and without deastringency treatment (95-98% CO2), were treated with high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) at 200 and 400 MPa during 1, 3 and 6 minutes. A microstructural study using Cryo Scanning Electron Microscopy, Light Microscopy and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (Cryo-SEM, LM and CLSM) was carried out. Total soluble solids content (TSS) and some textural properties were also analyzed. The aim of this study was the analysis of the effect of HHP on the microstructure of persimmon fruit cv. "Rojo Brillante" in different ripening stages and its relationship with bioactive compounds availability. The microstructural study showed that the application of HHP provokes cell wall disruption and intracellular components dispersion throughout the tissue, with an improvement in the availability of compounds with nutritional interest, such as tannins, fiber and carotenoids. TSS content diminishes in astringent samples when HHP is applied. This fact was attributed to the precipitation of soluble tannins. Therefore, deastringency treatment with CO2 could be omitted in samples treated with HHP. An overall decrease in firmness in both ripening stages and an increase in cohesiveness in the more advanced one were caused by HHP treatment.Vázquez Gutiérrez, JL. (2007). FOTV: a generic device offloading framework for OpenMP

Since the introduction of the “target” directive in the 4.0 specification, the usage of OpenMP for heterogeneous computing programming has increased significantly. However, the compiler support limits its usage because the code for the accelerated region has to be generated in compile time. This restricts the usage of accelerator-specific design flows (e.g. FPGA hardware synthesis) and the support of new devices that typically requires extending and modifying the compiler itself. This paper explores a solution to these limitations: a generic device that is supported by the OpenMP compiler but whose functionality is defined at runtime. The generic device framework has been integrated in an OpenMP compiler (LLVM/Clang). It acts as a device type for the compiler and interfaces with the physical devices to execute the accelerated code. The framework has an API that provides support for new devices and accelerated code without additional OpenMP compiler modifications. It also includes a code generator that extracts the source code of OpenMP target regions for external compilation chains. In order to evaluate the approach, we present a new device implementation that allows executing OpenCL code as an OpenMP target region. We study the overhead that the framework produces and show that it is minimal and comparable to other OpenMP devices. This work was done as part of the FitOptiVis project, funded by the ECSEL Joint Undertaking, grant H2020-ECSEL-2017–2-783162, and the Spanish MICINN, grant PCI2018–093057. The effects of corporate social responsibility on customer-based brand equity: Spanish hypermarket case

[EN] Hypermarkets have experienced substantial restructuring in the recent past because their situation has generated the necessity to develop new models that include different new aspects. The question under consideration here is whether the adoption of measures of corporate social responsibility (C.S.R.) by hypermarkets in Spanish markets can solve their continuing problems by establishing a fair degree of consumer-based brand equity. The purpose of the present study is twofold: (a) to investigate the effects of C.S.R. on hypermarket brand equity; and (b) to explore the dimensions of both these variables by using and testing property scales. As such, it is necessary to consider the possibility of integrating the management of C.S.R. into the global strategy of hypermarkets and to analyse its possible effects on the variables that influence consumer-based brand equity. It may be interesting to dedicate resources and efforts to strengthening hypermarkets’ links with their consumers.S

Evaluation of wave loads on a new type of perforated caisson

A new type of perforated breakwater has been tested combining the advantages of cylindrical geometry with stepped wave energy dissipation. Thus, the new type of caisson implies a significant reduction of maximum wave forces, as well as loads transmitted to the foundation in comparison with conventional vertical breakwater and other types of perforated caissons. Starting from a brief description of the model and test results, this paper describes the development of a methodology for the estimation of maximum wave loads on this type of breakwater, in order to become a generalisable tool for predesign purposes. Construction and installation constraints of this new type of caisson are also assessed. These need to be taken into account in order to keep some advantages from the proposed design, while noting the key factors from a practical point of view

    Get PDF
