    The 0 and the pi phase Josephson coupling through an insulating barrier with magnetic impurities

    We have studied temperature and field dependencies of the critical current ICI_{C} in the Nb-Fe0.1_{0.1}Si0.9_{0.9}-Nb Josephson junction with tunneling barrier formed by paramagnetic insulator. We demonstrate that in these junctions the co-existence of both the 0 and the π\pi states within one tunnel junction takes place which leads to the appearance of a sharp cusp in the temperature dependence IC(T)I_{C}(T) similar to the IC(T)I_{C}(T) cusp found for the 0π0-\pi transition in metallic π\pi junctions. This cusp is not related to the 0π0-\pi temperature induced transition itself, but is caused by the different temperature dependencies of the opposing 0 and π\pi supercurrents through the barrier.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review

    Cytological and molecular description of Hamiltosporidium tvaerminnensis gen. et sp. nov., a microsporidian parasite of Daphnia magna, and establishment of Hamiltosporidium magnivora comb. nov.

    We describe the new microsporidium Hamiltosporidium tvaerminnensis gen. et sp. nov. with an emphasis on its ultrastructural characteristics and phylogenetic position as inferred from the sequence data of SSU rDNA, alpha-and beta-tubulin. This parasite was previously identified as Octosporea bayeri Jirovec, 1936 and has become a model system to study the ecology, epidemiology, evolution and genomics of microsporidia - host interactions. Here, we present evidence that shows its differences from O. bayeri. Hamiltosporidium tvaerminnensis exclusively infects the adipose tissue, the ovaries and the hypodermis of Daphnia magna and is found only in host populations located in coastal rock pool populations in Finland and Sweden. Merogonial stages of H. tvaerminnensis have isolated nuclei; merozoites are formed by binary fission or by the cleaving of a plasmodium with a small number of nuclei. A sporogonial plasmodium with isolated nuclei yields 8 sporoblasts. Elongated spores are generated by the most finger-like plasmodia. The mature spores are polymorphic in shape and size. Most spores are pyriform (4.9-5.6x2.2-2.3 mu m) and have their polar filament arranged in 12-13 coils. A second, elongated spore type (6.8-12.0x1.6-2.1 mu m) is rod-shaped with blunt ends and measures 6.8-12.0x1.6-2.1 mu m. The envelope of the sporophorous vesicle is thin and fragile, formed at the beginning of the sporogony. Cytological and molecular comparisons with Flabelliforma magnivora, a parasite infecting the same tissues in the same host species, reveal that these two species are very closely related, yet distinct. Moreover, both cytological and molecular data indicate that these species are quite distant from F. montana, the type species of the genus Flabelliforma. We therefore propose that F. magnivora also be placed in Hamiltosporidium gen. nov

    Nanogranular MgB2 thin films on SiC buffered Si substrates prepared by in-situ method

    MgB2 thin films were deposited on SiC buffered Si substrates by sequential electron beam evaporation of B-Mg bilayer followed by in-situ annealing. The application of a SiC buffer layer enables the maximum annealing temperature of 830 C. The Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis confirms the growth of a nanogranular MgB2 film and the presence of a Mg2Si compound at the surface of the film. The 150-200 nm thick films show a maximum zero resistance critical temperature TC0 above 37 K and a critical current density JC ~ 106 A/cm2 at 11K.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Portmanteau tests for linearity of Stationary Time Series

    This paper considers the problem of testing for linearity of stationary time series. Portmanteau tests are discussed which are based on generalized correlations of residuals from a linear model (that is, autocorrelations and cross-correlations of different powers of the residuals). The finite-sample properties of the tests are assessed by means of Monte Carlo experiments. The tests are applied to 100 time series of stock returns

    Bootstrap-assisted tests of symmetry for dependent data

    The paper considers the problem of testing for symmetry (about an unknown centre) of the marginal distribution of a strictly stationary and weakly dependent stochastic process. The possibility of using the autoregressive sieve bootstrap and stationary bootstrap procedures to obtain critical values and P-values for symmetry tests is explored. Bootstrap-assisted tests for symmetry are straightforward to implement and require no prior estimation of asymptotic variances. The small-sample properties of a wide variety of tests are investigated using Monte Carlo experiments. A bootstrap-assisted version of the triples test is found to have the best overall performance

    Electrical and structural properties of MgB2 films prepared by sequential deposition of B and Mg on the NbN buffered Si(100) substrate

    We introduce a simple method of an MgB2 film preparation using sequential electron-beam evaporation of B-Mg two-layer (followed by in-situ annealing) on the NbN buffered Si(100) substrate. The Transmission Electron Microscopy analyses confirm a growth of homogeneous nanogranular MgB2 films without the presence of crystalline MgO. A sensitive measurement of temperature dependence of microwave losses shows a presence of intergranular weak links close the superconducting transition only. The MgB2 films obtained, about 200 nm thick, exhibit a maximum zero resistance critical temperature of 36 K and critical current density of 3x10^7 A/cm^2 at 13.2 KComment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Appl.     Tunable Chiral Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Chromophores Based on Helquat Dications

    Fourteen new dipolar cations have been synthesized, containing methoxy or tertiary amino electron donor groups attached to helquat (Hq) acceptors. These Hq derivatives have been characterized as their TfO^– salts by using various techniques including NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies. UV–vis spectra show intense, relatively low energy absorptions with λ_(max) ≈ 400–600 nm, attributable to intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) excitations. Single-crystal X-ray structures have been solved for two of the chromophores, one as its PF_6^– salt, revealing centrosymmetric packing arrangements (space groups Pbca and P1̅). Molecular quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses have been determined directly by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) with a 800 nm laser, and indirectly via Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopy for the low energy absorption bands. The obtained static first hyperpolarizabilities β_0 range from moderate to large: (9–140) × 10^(–30) esu from HRS in MeCN and (44–580) × 10^(–30) esu from the Stark data in PrCN. The magnitude of β_0 increases upon either extending the π-conjugation length or replacing a methoxy with a tertiary amino electron donor substituent. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations on selected tertiary amino chromophores confirm that the low energy absorptions have ICT character. Relatively good agreement between the simulated and experimental UV–vis absorption spectra is achieved by using the CAM-B3LYP functional with the 6-311G(d) basis set. The β_(tot) values predicted by using DFT at the same level of theory are large ((472–1443) × 10^(–30) esu in MeCN). Both the theoretical and experimental results show that para-conjugation between Hq and electron donor fragments is optimal, and enlarging the Hq unit is inconsequential with respect to the molecular quadratic NLO response

The small-sample properties of a variety of tests are investigated in an extensive set of Monte Carlo experiments. The bootstrap version of the classical skewness--kurtosis test is shown to have the best overall performance in small samples

    Dynamic changes in genomic and social structures in third millennium BCE central Europe

    Europe’s prehistory oversaw dynamic and complex interactions of diverse societies, hitherto unexplored at detailed regional scales. Studying 271 human genomes dated ~4900 to 1600 BCE from the European heartland, Bohemia, we reveal unprecedented genetic changes and social processes. Major migrations preceded the arrival of “steppe” ancestry, and at ~2800 BCE, three genetically and culturally differentiated groups coexisted. Corded Ware appeared by 2900 BCE, were initially genetically diverse, did not derive all steppe ancestry from known Yamnaya, and assimilated females of diverse backgrounds. Both Corded Ware and Bell Beaker groups underwent dynamic changes, involving sharp reductions and complete replacements of Y-chromosomal diversity at ~2600 and ~2400 BCE, respectively, the latter accompanied by increased Neolithic-like ancestry.
