The meaning of 'being political': an analysis of 'artist initatives' in İstanbul

The emergence of ‘artist initiatives’ represent a new form of collective organization in the contemporary art scene in Turkey. In the media, they have acquired news value and framed as a link between creativity and ‘being political’. With the use of culture as a resource in the era of neoliberalism, this thesis aims to analyze the three distinct factors, which lend specific content and meaning to the idea of ‘being political’ in Istanbul’s art scene. Firstly the historical and institutional constitution of the art field in Turkey during the past two decades of neoliberalism; secondly the discursive framings of actors in this field on this subject and thirdly the growing linkages with transnational networks of artists and activists

"Belonging” in the gentrified Golden Horn/Halic neighbourhoods of Istanbul

Mainstream gentrification research predominantly examines experiences and motivations of the middle-class gentrifier groups, while overlooking experiences of non-gentrifying groups including the impact of in situ local processes on gentrification itself. In this paper, I discuss gentrification, neighbourhood belonging and spatial distribution of class in Istanbul by examining patterns of belonging both of gentrifiers and non-gentrifying groups in historic neighbourhoods of the Golden Horn/Halic. I use multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), a methodology rarely used in gentrification research, to explore social and symbolic borders between these two groups. I show how gentrification leads to spatial clustering by creating exclusionary practices and eroding social cohesion, and illuminate divisions that are inscribed into the physical space of the neighbourhood

Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

Urban governance in Istanbul Governança urbana em Istambul

Urban governance has been an important issue since the 1980s, as have the effects of globalisation on urban policies. Although no consensus exists on a definition of governance, it is possible to state that it expresses a shift in the roles of formal government structure, and especially the change in the sharing of responsibilities between the public, private, voluntary, and household spheres. Turkey has also been experiencing the effects of globalisation, and there is an ongoing restructuring process within which government structures are moving toward governance. The goal of this paper is to present a critical evaluation of urban governance. This will be done with the focus on whether the concept of urban governance can explain the urban management model in countries on the periphery. The case of Istanbul is used as an example for this discussion.A governança urbana e os efeitos da globalização têm assumido uma importância crescente desde a década de 80 do século xx nas políticas urbanas. Embora não exista um consenso quanto à definição de governança, é possível afirmar que esta representa uma alteração nas estruturas formais de governo, e especialmente uma mudança na divisão de responsabilidades entre as esferas pública, privada, voluntária e doméstica. Os efeitos da globalização também se fizeram sentir na Turquia, onde se assiste a um processo de alteração das estruturas de governo no sentido das práticas de governança. Este texto pretende avaliar de forma crítica este processo, analisando se o conceito de governança urbana será capaz de explicar modelos de gestão urbana em países da periferia. O caso de Istambul será usado como exemplo para tal discussão
