WIDGET: System Performance and GRB Prompt Optical Observations
The WIDeField telescope for Gamma-ray burst Early Timing (WIDGET) is used for
a fully automated, ultra-wide-field survey aimed at detecting the prompt
optical emission associated with Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). WIDGET surveys the
HETE-2 and Swift/BAT pointing directions covering a total field of view of 62
degree x 62 degree every 10 secounds using an unfiltered system. This
monitoring survey allows exploration of the optical emission before the
gamma-ray trigger. The unfiltered magnitude is well converted to the SDSS r'
system at a 0.1 mag level. Since 2004, WIDGET has made a total of ten
simultaneous and one pre-trigger GRB observations. The efficiency of
synchronized observation with HETE-2 is four times better than that of Swift.
There has been no bright optical emission similar to that from GRB 080319B. The
statistical analysis implies that GRB080319B is a rare event. This paper
summarizes the design and operation of the WIDGET system and the simultaneous

Numerical investigations to suppress thermal deformation of the large deployable reflector during earth eclipse in space
In space, structures encounter various severe environments, including severe thermal conditions. The signal level of the radio wave from the Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) mounted on the Engineering Test Satellite-VIII (ETS-VIII) was observed to change during an Earth eclipse. This phenomenon was assumed to be caused by the thermal deformation of the LDR. Therefore, in this study, a means to suppress the thermal deformation is proposed and demonstrated by focusing on the internal force generated at the springs used to deploy the antenna. According to the numerical results obtained from finite element analyses, the thermal deformations at all apices that support the reflectors were suppressed at a high correction rate by adjusting the coefficients of thermal expansion in the structural members and by controlling spring forces differently in four areas depending on the distances from the constraint point
Epidemiology of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance in salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium isolates from food-producing animals in Japan
A total of 225 isolates of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium from food-producing animals collected between 2003 and 2007 were examined for the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants, namely qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, qnrS, qepA and aac(6')Ib-cr, in Japan. Two isolates (0.8%) of S. Typhimurium DT104 from different dairy cows on a single farm in 2006 and 2007 were found to have qnrS1 on a plasmid of approximately 9.6-kbp. None of the S. Typhimurium isolates had qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, qepA and acc(6')-Ib-cr. Currently in Japan, the prevalence of the PMQR genes among S. Typhimurium isolates from food animals may remain low or restricted. The PFGE profile of two S. Typhimurium DT104 isolates without qnrS1 on the farm in 2005 had an identical PFGE profile to those of two S. Typhimurium DT104 isolates with qnrS1. The PFGE analysis suggested that the already existing S. Typhimurium DT104 on the farm fortuitously acquired the qnrS1 plasmid
Mixing model of Phobos' bulk elemental composition for the determination of its origin: Multivariate analysis of MMX/MEGANE data
The formation process of the two Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, is still
debated with two main competing hypotheses: the capture of an asteroid or a
giant impact onto Mars. In order to reveal their origin, the Martian Moons
eXploration (MMX) mission by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to
measure Phobos' elemental composition by a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer
called MEGANE. This study provides a model of Phobos' bulk elemental
composition, assuming the two formation hypotheses. Using the mixing model, we
established a MEGANE data analysis flow to discriminate between the formation
hypotheses by multivariate analysis. The mixing model expresses the composition
of Phobos in 6 key lithophile elements that will be measured by MEGANE (Fe, Si,
O, Ca, Mg, and Th) as a linear mixing of two mixing components: material from
Mars and material from an asteroid as represented by primitive meteorite
compositions. The inversion calculation includes consideration of MEGANE's
measurement errors () and derives the mixing ratio for a given Phobos
composition, based on which the formation hypotheses are judged. For at least
65\% of the modeled compositions, MEGANE measurements will determine the origin
uniquely ( = 30\%), and this increases from 74 to 87\% as decreases
from 20 to 10\%. Although the discrimination performance depends on , the
current operation plan for MEGANE predicts an instrument performance for
of 20--30\%, resulting in ~70\% discrimination between the original hypotheses.
MEGANE observations can also enable the determination of the asteroid type of
the captured body or the impactor. The addition of other measurements, such as
MEGANE's measurements of the volatile element K, as well as observations by
other MMX remote sensing instruments, will also contribute to the MMX mission's

A multi band study of the optically dark GRB 051028
Observations were made of the optical afterglow of GRB 051028 with the Lulin
observatory's 1.0 m telescope and the WIDGET robotic telescope system. R band
photometric data points were obtained on 2005 October 28 (UT), or 0.095-0.180
days after the burst. There is a possible plateau in the optical light curve
around 0.1 days after the burst; the light curve resembles optically bright
afterglows (e.g. GRB 041006, GRB 050319, GRB060605) in shape of the light curve
but not in brightness. The brightness of the GRB 051028 afterglow is 3
magnitudes fainter than that of one of the dark events, GRB 020124. Optically
dark GRBs have been attributed to dust extinction within the host galaxy or
high redshift. However, the spectrum analysis of the X-rays implies that there
is no significant absorption by the host galaxy. Furthermore, according to the
model theoretical calculation of the Ly absorption to find the limit of
GRB 051028's redshift, the expected band absorption is not high enough to
explain the darkness of the afterglow. While the present results disfavor
either the high-redshift hypothesis or the high extinction scenario for
optically dark bursts, they are consistent with the possibility that the

Intake frequency of vegetables or seafoods negatively correlates with disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis
Objective: To clarify the relationship between dietary habit and disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: This study enrolled RA patients who met the ACR/EULAR 2010 classification criteria from Kyoto University Rheumatoid Arthritis Management Alliance (KURAMA) cohort in 2015. 22-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was taken for the measurement of dietary habit in a single-institution cohort of RA (Kyoto University Rheumatoid Arthritis Management Alliance: KURAMA) in 2015. The disease activities of RA using the Disease Activity Score calculated based on the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR), Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI), Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), and serum matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) level, the use of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), disease duration, rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated antibody, and body mass index were also examined. All of them were combined and statistically analyzed. Results: 441 RA patients (81% women; mean age 65 years; mean disease duration 15 years) were enrolled from the KURAMA cohort. Average Disease Activity Score-28 using the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) was 2.7. Univariate analysis showed that intake frequency of vegetables had a statistically significant negative correlation with disease activity markers, such as DAS28-ESR (ρ = −0.11, p<0.01), Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) (ρ = −0.16, p<0.001), matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) (ρ = −0.21, p<0.0001), and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) (ρ = −0.13, p<0.01). Factor analysis with varimax rotation was done to simplify the relevance of disease activity to various food items. 22 foods were categorized into five dietary patterns: “seafoods”, “vegetables/fruits”, “meats/fried foods”, “snacks”, and “processed foods”. The multivariate analysis adjusted for clinically significant confounders showed that “seafoods” had statistically significant negative correlations with DAS28-ESR (β = −0.15, p<0.01), SDAI (β = −0.18, p<0.001), MMP-3 (β = −0.15, p<0.01), and HAQ (β = −0.24, p<0.0001). “Vegetables/fruits” had statistically significant negative correlations with SDAI (β = −0.11 p<0.05), MMP-3 (β = −0.12, p<0.01), and HAQ (β = −0.11, p<0.05) Conclusions: These results suggest that high intake frequency of vegetables/fruits and/or seafoods might correlate with low disease activity
The Ship of Theseus Puzzle
Does the Ship of Theseus present a genuine puzzle about persistence due to conflicting intuitions based on “continuity of form” and “continuity of matter” pulling in opposite directions? Philosophers are divided. Some claim that it presents a genuine puzzle but disagree over whether there is a solution. Others claim that there is no puzzle at all since the case has an obvious solution. To assess these proposals, we conducted a cross-cultural study involving nearly 3,000 people across twenty-two countries, speaking eighteen different languages. Our results speak against the proposal that there is no puzzle at all and against the proposal that there is a puzzle but one that has no solution. Our results suggest that there are two criteria—“continuity of form” and “continuity of matter”— that constitute our concept of persistence and these two criteria receive different weightings in settling matters concerning persistence
Phylogenetic groups and cephalosporin resistance genes of Escherichia coli from diseased food-producing animals in Japan
A total of 318 Escherichia coli isolates obtained from different food-producing animals affected with colibacillosis between 2001 and 2006 were subjected to phylogenetic analysis: 72 bovine isolates, 89 poultry isolates and 157 porcine isolates. Overall, the phylogenetic group A was predominant in isolates from cattle (36/72, 50%) and pigs (101/157, 64.3%) whereas groups A (44/89, 49.4%) and D (40/89, 44.9%) were predominant in isolates from poultry. In addition, group B2 was not found among diseased food-producing animals except for a poultry isolate. Thus, the phylogenetic group distribution of E. coli from diseased animals was different by animal species. Among the 318 isolates, cefazolin resistance (minimum inhibitory concentrations: ≥32 μg/ml) was found in six bovine isolates, 29 poultry isolates and three porcine isolates. Of them, 11 isolates (nine from poultry and two from cattle) produced extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). The two bovine isolates produced blaCTX-M-2, while the nine poultry isolates produced blaCTX-M-25 (4), blaSHV-2 (3), blaCTX-M-15 (1) and blaCTX-M-2 (1). Thus, our results showed that several types of ESBL were identified and three types of β-lactamase (SHV-2, CTX-M-25 and CTX-M-15) were observed for the first time in E. coli from diseased animals in Japan

White matter microstructural alterations across four major psychiatric disorders : mega-analysis study in 2937 individuals
Identifying both the commonalities and differences in brain structures among psychiatric disorders is important for understanding the pathophysiology. Recently, the ENIGMA-Schizophrenia DTI Working Group performed a large-scale meta-analysis and reported widespread white matter microstructural alterations in schizophrenia; however, no similar cross-disorder study has been carried out to date. Here, we conducted mega-analyses comparing white matter microstructural differences between healthy comparison subjects (HCS; N = 1506) and patients with schizophrenia (N = 696), bipolar disorder (N = 211), autism spectrum disorder (N = 126), or major depressive disorder (N = 398; total N = 2937 from 12 sites). In comparison with HCS, we found that schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder share similar white matter microstructural differences in the body of the corpus callosum; schizophrenia and bipolar disorder featured comparable changes in the limbic system, such as the fornix and cingulum. By comparison, alterations in tracts connecting neocortical areas, such as the uncinate fasciculus, were observed only in schizophrenia. No significant difference was found in major depressive disorder. In a direct comparison between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, there were no significant differences. Significant differences between schizophrenia/bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder were found in the limbic system, which were similar to the differences in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder relative to HCS. While schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may have similar pathological characteristics, the biological characteristics of major depressive disorder may be close to those of HCS. Our findings provide insights into nosology and encourage further investigations of shared and unique pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders
Prospective Study on the Association between Harm Avoidance and Postpartum Depressive State in a Maternal Cohort of Japanese Women
BACKGROUND: Recent studies have displayed increased interest in examining the relationship between personality traits and the onset, treatment response patterns, and relapse of depression. This study aimed to examine whether or not harm avoidance (HA) was a risk factor for postpartum depression measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the state dependency of HA. METHODS: Pregnant women (n=460; mean age 31.9±4.2 years) who participated in a prenatal program completed the EPDS as a measure of depressive state and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) as a measure of HA during three periods: early pregnancy (T1), late pregnancy (around 36 weeks), and 1 month postpartum (T2). Changes in EPDS and HA scores from T1 to T2 were compared between the non depressive (ND) group and the postpartum depressive (PD) group. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the level of HA between the ND and PD groups at T1. In the ND group, EPDS and HA scores did not change significantly from T1 to T2. In the PD group, both scores increased significantly from T1 to T2 (EPDS, p<0.0001; HA, p<0.048). In the ND and PD groups, a significant positive correlation was observed in changes in EPDS and HA scores from T1 to T2 (r=0.31, p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that HA cannot be considered a risk factor for the development of postpartum depression measured by EPDS. Furthermore, HA may be state dependent
