The Innovativeness of Foreign Firms in China

    Get PDF
This paper studies the relationship between foreign ownership and innovations of high novelty in context of advanced developing countries. We develop hypotheses about a direct relationship in terms of two dimensions, propensity and intensity of innovations of high novelty, and a contingency hypothesis about the moderating impact of R&D internationalisation on the relationship with propensity. The analysis is based on innovation survey data on manufacturing firms from Jiangsu province of China. Hypotheses are tested using non-parametric methods. We find that foreign firms do not have a higher propensity of innovations of high novelty, not even when they engage in formal R&D. However, the evidence suggests that foreign firms have a higher intensity of innovations of high novelty than domestic firms.multinational enterprises, foreign firms, innovation, manufacturing, China

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR E-GOVERNMENT: METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO INDICATOR DEVELOPMENT

It is often assumed that modern information technology (IT) is a source of performance improvement. Empirical research has not univocally confirmed this assumption, since complex, extensive and resource demanding IT tools require extensive organizational restructuring, in order to be properly and successfully implemented. This generates the need to create and use business intelligence and key performance indicators (KPI) to obtain a high quality basis for making decisions in real time. In this paper, authors analyze the existence of a potential relationship between the methodological approach to defining business intelligence (BI)-related KPIs and achieving business process performance, as well as the overall organizational performance. The methodological determinants of the process, in which the KPIs are defined, are empirically analyzed and associated with the two discussed aspects of performance. The empirical analysis is conducted for the case of e-government development, with the special emphasis on countries from Central, East and South-East Europe. The E-Government development is measured by two KPIs, which have been defined, by strictly following the recommended BI methodology. The two KPIs are related to a business process, performed by the public administration, which can be greatly facilitated by the introduction of E-Government. This is the process of opening a new enterprise, which can be also viewed as one of key measures of the national economic and entrepreneurial development. The public administration performance in serving the needs of new entrepreneurs for company registration is, therefore, considered in terms of E-Government performance. Two KPIs used measure the procedural complexity and costs for opening a new enterprise in a sample, consisting of 28 European Union member-states. The statistical analysis uses secondary data, available from the official Eurostat Web pages. The empirical results confirm the existence of the hypothesized relationship between the methodological procedures for developing KPIs and the process performance, which affirms the need to develop both E-Government, as well as other processes in public administration, by using solid planning and methodological approaches

Business intelligence and key performance ndicators (KPI) are used to measure performances of business processes and company business, to the end of making correct decisions and improving business. Many authors emphasize the importance of business intelligence and key performance indicators for business success and achieving market advantage, as well as company survival in the global market. This work is an attempt to both explain theoretically and study empirically the importance of proper KPI development and its influence on company business. We are studying the influence of properly formed key indicator performances on improving business process performances through the example of eGovernment in 28 EU member states. By forming the KPI and performing the statistical analysis of their relationship, a positive linear dependence of parameters has been proven. Therefore, it can be confirmed that introducing the business intelligence system in companies and introducing key indicators, based on quick and accurate information, into decision making process, although expensive, is still beneficial. Companies need to be able to follow the current exponential growth of the global economy and technology, adapt quickly and develop their business. There is no time for lengthy studies and considerations, and even less for intuitive and incorrect decisions, that can lead to company failure

This paper analyses the concept of ethnographic film from the position of two institutions from the beginning of the 20th century: Ethnological Seminar at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb and the School of Public Health. This analysis explains the importance of ethnographic qualities of films made by these two different institutions that (in)directly represent the culture of the village. Diverse film production, very often uncritically brought under the common denominator of ethnographic film, will be reassessed by analysing the content of the film and discussing additional rewritings of their meaning and reception in the social and political context of the time

Signalling pathways that control development and antibiotic production in streptomyces

    Get PDF
Bacteria are highly complex and diverse organisms that have adapted to survive in ecological niches ranging from the most extreme to the most heterogeneous environments. Actinobacteria, with their beautiful morphologies and complex multicellular life cycle, are a striking example. These filamentous bacteria produce many enzymes and natural products, including two-thirds of all known antibiotics, which makes them highly relevant for medical, biotechnological and industrial applications. In Streptomyces, complex and intertwining regulatory networks, consisting of pathway-specific and global regulators, control development and antibiotic production in response to environmental stimuli and stresses. This thesis explores how the model organism Streptomyces coelicolor senses environmental signals, related to oxygen stress and the availability of aminosugars, and how the bacterium translates these into appropriate responses.Microbial Biotechnolog
