A HORMONAL AND RADIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF ADRENAL-GLAND IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE OR CHRONIC PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS

    No full text
OBJECTIVE The adrenal glands may be involved in tuberculosis. The exact frequency and extent of adrenal involvement in tuberculosis are not well known. Although there are some studies regarding adrenal gland involvement, they are not sufficient because of inadequate endocrinological tests and radiological procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the adrenal gland in acute and chronic pulmonary tuberculosis and to compare it with the findings obtained in healthy subjects

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of postoperative local anesthesia in tonsillectomy patients using an intra-individual study design

Integration of biology, ecology and engineering for sustainable algal-based biofuel and bioproduct biorefinery

Abstract Despite years of concerted research efforts, an industrial-scale technology has yet to emerge for production and conversion of algal biomass into biofuels and bioproducts. The objective of this review is to explore the ways of possible integration of biology, ecology and engineering for sustainable large algal cultivation and biofuel production systems. Beside the costs of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, and fresh water, upstream technologies which are not ready for commercialization both impede economic feasibility and conflict with the ecological benefits in the sector. Focusing mainly on the engineering side of chemical conversion of algae to biodiesel has also become obstacle. However, to reduce the costs, one potential strategy has been progressing steadily to synergistically link algal aquaculture to the governmentally mandated reduction of nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations in municipal wastewater. Recent research also supports the suppositions of scalability and cost reduction. Noticeably, less is known of the economic impact of conversion of the whole algae-based biorefinery sector with additional biochemical and thermochemical processes and integration with ecological constraints. This review finds that a biorefinery approach with integrated biology, ecology, and engineering could lead to a feasible algal-based technology for variety of biofuels and bioproducts

GUILLOTINE AND DISSECTION TONSILLECTOMY IN CHILDREN

Tonsillectomy as an outpatient or same day-stay procedure is becoming increasingly popular. A retrospect study was performed on 1,049 children who underwent tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy either with guillotine or dissection with snare method. The dissection method was performed both under general anaesthesia and with local anaesthesia, but the guillotine method was performed only with local anaesthesia. Generally, bleeding control required no special intervention in the guillotine method but haemostasis was achieved by ligation and electrocauterization in one-third of the patients in the dissection group operated under general anaesthesia. The greatest percentage of haemorrhage in both methods occurred within the first four post-operative hours. There was a 1.8 per cent incidence of severe reactive haemorrhage required surgical intervention in the dissection group operated under general anaesthesia, but there was no such case in the guillotine group

Occult hepatitis B infection in Turkish HIV-infected patients: A multicentre, retrospective, cross-sectional study, Schindler study

Objective Occult hepatitis B infection (OHBI) appears to have a higher prevalence in populations at high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with concomitant liver disease. The aim was to assess the prevalence of OHBI in a sample of human immunodeficiency virus -1 positive and HBV surface antigen-negative (HIV-1+/HBsAg-) Turkish patients
